The Charlatans U.K. on Tour

The Charlatans U.K. are one of Britain's hardiest and endlessly creative rock acts. Long after becoming a defining band of the moment when rock converged with rave culture, they weathered the changes around them to stake out a unique place in British music. A powerful demonstration of their melodic, guitar-driven blend of rock, soul, and dance music, Different Days became their 13th album to reach the U.K. Top 40 in 2017.

The Charlatans originally formed in Birmingham in 1989 before relocating to the Northwich hometown of singer Tim Burgess. Success came quickly for the young act, which scored an indie hit with debut single "Indian Rope."Ā

They then became a nationwide phenomenon with the release of "The Only One I Know." With its fusion of 1960s R&B and the energy of British rave culture, the Charlatans' first Top 10 hit helped define what would become the Manchester sound ā€” so what if they actually hailed from the West Midlands? The Charlatans' debut album Some Friendly went straight to No. 1 in 1990.

Despite the legal challenge by an American band that resulted in the addition of "U.K." to their name, the group made a strong first impression with U.S. listeners. Some Friendly reached No. 73 on the Billboard 200, with "The Only One I Know" peaking at No. 37 on the Mainstream Rock singles chart.

The Charlatans U.K. topped the British charts again in 1995 with their self-titled fourth album. Streamlining their sound for the Britpop era, the Charlatans U.K. found a sweet spot between acid house and Rolling Stonesā€“style classic rock. The band members' love of folk, soul, R&B, and reggae would shine through on subsequent albums like Telling Stories (another No. 1 in 1997), Us and Us Only (1999), and Simpatico (2006).

Sadly, their history would be marked by the tragic loss of original keyboardist Rob Collins, who died in an auto accident in 1996; and drummer Jon Brookes, who succumbed to a battle with cancer in 2013. But the band ā€” now a foursome of singer Tim Burgess, bassist Martin Blunt, guitarist Mark Collins, and keyboardist Tony Rogers ā€” brandish the same verve and vitality they displayed in those early days. A four-track EP released in 2018, Totally Eclipsing is convincing proof for any who may need it.

    A Fine Event!

by Richard H on 1/11/24The Van Buren - Phoenix

We really enjoyed the Charlatans concert at The Van Buren in Phoenix. Lots of energy, great sound, lots of cohesion within the band. Bass, Guitar, Drums, Vocals, and last but certainly not least, Keyboards all at "high energy"level! Certainly brought back a lot of great memories of both Manchester and that special era of music we sadly miss. So great that many of these creative bands still have the passion to deliver a wonderful experience for their fans after so many years (and, often, tears).

    Great show, double whammy.

by Juan V Good on 1/9/24House of Blues San Diego - San Diego

Ride was just perfect, then came the Charlatans and made my day (year). One of the best experiences Iā€™ve had in a concert. Took a ride and got fooled (in a good way) by the charlatans.

The Charlatans San Diego CA HOB 01/06/2024

by Soda Pop on 1/9/24House of Blues San Diego - San Diego

The Charlatans put on an excellent show at the San Diego House of Blues last night. The band was in fine form and Tim Burgess stirred the pot literally and figuratively to the swirls of the bandā€™s music. Their groove was driven by the rhythm section and layered with keyboards and guitar to create a bluesy, soulful, folky, psychedelia that the band is known for. They played all of their second record Between 10th and 11th from start to finish and sprinkled in some of their hits at the end of the set. A fine time was had by their fans grooving and dancing during their whole set. Everyone in the HOB was all in and the band received a warm send off as they exited the stage. This concert goer was impressed and satisfied with their set. Looking forward to their return.

Switched the bands! Great gig otherwise.

by The charlies on 1/9/24The Wiltern - Los Angeles

First off the venue and the bands were both great. Thoroughly enjoyed it. The charlatans are still good after all these years. My one complaint they switched the order of the bands unannounced, we were delayed due to an accident and by time we got there the charlatans had been on for 30 minutes. I was expecting them to be up second and they had even been the night before, shame we kissed some of their show.

Both Ride and Charlatans put on a fantastic show playing classic albums. The venue was great, the staff was fabulous and the sound was pitch perfect. Hope to see them both again!

    What was that?

by Madman on 1/8/24The Wiltern - Los Angeles

I love live music and attend a lot of concerts annually. This was by far the worst show I've seen in the last decade. With that being said, the band did sound tight and on point, props to the band members. The singer however came on stage like he just rolled off the couch, binge watching Netflix. He looked high as a kite, gave it his minimum effort and was off the stage and lights up within an hour. Even the venue (The Wiltern, Los Angeles which is excellent!) was like, hello it's only 9:30pm. I felt like going to another concert after this one, just to wash away the experience. Ironically this one ended so early that I would have had time to do so. LOL!!! Open a bottle of wine and play the Charlatans UK album, much better than going to this show.

    Here for the opening band

by Al-boy on 1/8/24The Fillmore - San Francisco

The Charlatans were energetic and fun, but RIDE stole the show! They played the "Nowhere"album in its entirety from start to finish and it was truly amazing.

    What a treat!

by Ry Ry on 1/7/24The Fillmore - San Francisco

Two amazing time-tested headliners in one show. What a treat, truly. They were both so great. Just wish Charlatans played 'Can't Get Out Of Bed' but they did play for TWO HOURS so no complaints! Such a rich catalog to pull from and they played great with no stops. Ride as always were wonderful, like a dream. Grateful.

Charlatans were excellent , Ride poor, drums too loud.

by Chillville on 2/26/23The Fillmore - San Francisco

Charlatans had tons of energy and the lead singers charisma was powerful. Great set. I had high hopes for Ride but the drums were too loud for this guitar band. Way too loud. Usually the sound at The Fillmore is solid not this time.

    Great Bands Bad Sound

    by A. M. on 2/21/23

The Charlatans and Ride have been around long enough to know what they are doing and are great at what they do. The main issue was the sound. The sound at the Wiltern was atrocious. Due to Ride's feedback layers, their sound was okay. The vocals were drowned out by the muddy bass and hard to make out. This sucked because Ride uses harmonic vocals and they just did not stand out. The Charlatans sound was okay, but they had the some of the same issues. The Bass Guitar was blown out. Keyboards were not loud enough against the Bass. Tim sounded terrible. But, it was mainly due to the sound board. His vocals were over modulated, shrill, and cringey at points. If they were using the house sound engineer, then they should go to an audiologist. If they were using their own sound engineer, then it is time to find a new one. I have been to shows at the Wiltern for over 35 years and I have to say this was a new low for the sound. Overall a good night out, just wish the sound was better.

    Deaf

    by @UrbBlurb on 2/16/23Commodore Ballroom - Vancouver

More a Ride fan going in but the sound levels were off for them, making out at 110-111 db. Too much for that room. Also missing keys so the set was disappointing. Way better sound levels for the Charlatans - sounded dialled in and the room appreciated it.

    Thenā€¦

by Jason on 2/7/23History - Toronto

Iā€™m so glad that this was a sellout and so many people got to see The Charlatans at their best. Tim is an amazing front man and what makes him so good is that he still demonstrates not just a passion for the music but the passion and connection to the fans as well. Then happenedā€¦made my night!

The Charlatans and opening band, Ride were both fantastic! I thought they sounded amazing! Lead singer was very interactive with crowd! We were right up front also! The venue, History, was also super impressive! I can't wait to go back to see more shows there! šŸ‘

by DSRB on 2/7/23History - Toronto

My son and I attended Charlatans UK / Ride at History in TO. This venue is amazing. We had full service seating in the mezzanine area. A lovely way to experience a concert. Sound and view were epic.
