About

THE BOTH IN CONCERT:

The supergroup is already an entrenched rock and roll tradition, but with arrival of The Both, Ted Leo and Aimee Mann's new project, the superduo is making gains. Combining Leo's distorted yet tuneful guitar work and Mann's easy, silvery vocals, The Both is power-pop at its best, as heard on their debut single "Milwaukee," all brisk drums and bright harmonies. In advance of their 2014 debut full-length, The Both are treating fans to select US tour dates, and if Leo's punk rock background has anything to say about it, the duo will pull out all the stops at their live shows.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

While on tour together as solo acts in 2013, Ted Leo and Aimee Mann decided to team up after sharing an aha moment in front of a statue of Arthur Fonzarelli, a.k.a. The Fonz, in downtown Milwaukee. Both were already respected musicians — Leo made a name for himself in the '00s with Ted Leo and the Pharmacists, while Mann is known for her time fronting '80s new wave band 'Til Tuesday and an illustrious solo career. Although the two have shared many bills over the years, The Both marks their first collaboration, but you'd never know it — the ease and confidence the duo exude on debut single "Milwaukee" implies a much more veteran project. As far as new music goes, it doesn't get much newer than The Both — with their first full-length and tour scheduled for spring 2014, fans at their first live shows wills share the privilege of getting in early on a very promising project.

Great show all around. Great chemistry between Aimee and Ted. Matt the drummer was also excellent. Good crowd/energy. Very enjoyable evening.

    Average show…Awful Venue

by uFuktitup on 5/2/14Bowery Ballroom - New York

I will always be an Aimee Mann fan, and Ted Leo and the Pharmacists have been at the top of my playlist for years, so I was really looking forward to this show. Unfortunately, for me at least, having this show at the Bowery Ballroom ruined it for me. And I've seen seen tons of shows there, but this was a concert that would have worked MUCH better if you could just be sitting down! This was not a rock show where you didn't mind being part of a large crowd. It was much more intimate and I just wished I was more comfortable. Maybe the slightly too-long banter between Aimee and Ted accentuated the fact that I was forced to stand…on a very crowded floor…for an hour and a half, but I actually found myself wanting to just leave!

    Such chemistry!

by carriebel on 4/30/14Port City Music Hall - Portland

Aimee Mann and Ted Leo graced the stage together as if they were siblings. The casual banter back and forth made me feel like I was hanging out in the green room with them. Their voices complimented each other so well that it was sometimes difficult to pick out the individual singer. Their onstage chemistry was unmatched. I highly recommend seeing this while they're on tour!

Truly great show, thety were both talkative with the crowd , sounded great. It was great hearing them together, you can tell musically it's a new creative oulet for them and has them both testing thems artistically. Not one bad moment .

    The Both was amazing!

by AManWhoSellsFish on 4/29/14Port City Music Hall - Portland

Aimee Mann and Ted Leo together is a miracle. Their stage presence is amazing, their musicianship blew me away and the show was just phenomenal. They did an exceptional mix of the songs that they've written together, some of Aimee's songs and some of Ted's.

    Really Great

The event really exceeded my expectations. Two really great musicians know how to put on a show.

Too much talk, not enough rock!

by alex24 on 4/28/14Paradise Rock Club - Boston

Aimee & Ted sounded amazing when they were actually playing music. The forced banter, with no more than two songs in-between, made it quite obvious they did not have enough material to headline a show. A fact I find difficult to believe having seen Aimee in the old days with Til Tuesday and in later years solo. While I understand it was not an Aimee Mann show, they could have performed more than two of her solo efforts rather than hold a silly dialogue about back room graffiti. I felt like I was on a bad sitcom.

    Yuck

by MarieWagner on 4/28/14Paradise Rock Club - Boston

This just didn't work for me. I was very disappointed. I kept waiting for some rock on but it never happened. The banter was way too much and canned.

The Both is a must see!

by JandB1 on 4/27/14Port City Music Hall - Portland

The Both played a great set last night in Portland, Maine! Their joint music is both interesting and fun; it seems to take both artists to really new places. The three piece sound was tight, yet full, and the harmonies carried the night. For me, much of the music was new, yet it was all great, including some solid rockers, quieter mood pieces, and some good hooks as well. The venue was good, the crowd was into it, and the band seemed to enjoy their time on stage. Thanks, Aimee and Ted, for coming to Maine and congratulations on creating a great new sound together. Loved the video about Ted's "uncle."
