About

The band simply known as "The Band" came from America's neighbor to the north to carve out an astonishing career, first as the backing band for Bob Dylan during one of his most fruitful periods, and then through their own series of legendary albums, singles and concert tours. Concertgoers who were lucky enough to experience The Band live witnessed rock and roll as close as possible to perfection for their ticket price, a group full of prolific, prodigal artists playing some of the most soulful and exuberant music ever recorded. There is a reason that their goodbye film, "The Last Waltz," is considered the greatest concert film ever; it captures the astonishing live power of The Band at their peak.

The Band grew out of the Toronto music scene, beginning as the backing group for legendary rocker, Ronnie Hawkins, before splitting off to record their own music. They accepted an offer to become Bob Dylan's backing band, honing their sound as Dylan recuperated from a motorcycle accident. These recordings ended up being their much-beloved first album, "Music From Big Pink." The album, featuring outstanding singles "I Shall Be Released" and "The Weight," is ranked No. 34 on Rolling Stone's "Top 500 Albums" list. A year later, in 1969, their follow-up album, "The Band," took on more historical themes, seen in songs like "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down." The album is ranked No. 45 of all time on that same Rolling Stone list. After releasing five more acclaimed albums, "Cahoots," "Stage Fright," "Moondog Matinee," "Northern Lights - Southern Cross" and "Islands," through the 1970s, The Band’s members went their separate ways, only reuniting for a trio of albums in the 1990s that did not excite the masses as much as their earlier work did. Still, The Band remains one of the most lauded rock groups of all time. They're members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award winners, and should be permanent residents in anyone's music collection.
