Tennis on Tour

There's no doubt that Tennis have real chemistry onstage — singer Alaina Moore and guitarist Patrick Riley are married and have been since they started this sweetly hooky indie pop outfit back in 2010. In person, they often take turns on keyboards while backed by drums and bass. This configuration lets the pair lean into their modern, lightly psychedelic side, joining dreamy atmosphere with driving rhythm. But the moments when the backing band steps away are all the more compelling, highlighting the depth of Moore's voice and the sparkle of Riley's chords, not to mention their mutual love for vintage ‘50s pop. The Denver-based couple tours nearly nonstop, supporting indie rock giants like HAIM, the Shins and Spoon, as well as headlining their own shows. For their 2020 run behind their fifth album Swimmer, they tapped the beguiling and breathy Austin retro-pop queen Molly Burch. If Tennis' music often feels beamed in from another era, they typically have the look to match — '70s hair, flared pants, sequins, turtlenecks — all of which adds to their out-of-time appeal.

Tennis in Concert

Tennis' origin story is truly one of one. Sure, Moore and Riley met in a philosophy class while studying at the University of Colorado in Denver — fairly standard. But upon graduation, the couple spent eight months at sea in their boat, The Swift Ranger, touring the East Coast while discussing music. Their 2011 debut album, Cape Dory, in fact documents that experience. Though it was intended as a personal project, the record wooed audiences with its lovely "sha-na-nas" and sparkling lo-fi indie pop, paving the way for a second LP the very next year. 2012's Young & Old was produced by the Black Keys' Patrick Carney. That one found Tennis loosening up after months of touring, letting the drums and keys speak even as Moore's vocals became clearer and more emotionally evocative. In between major releases, the duo solidified their malt-shop, dream-pop sound covering the likes of the Zombies, Brenda Lee, Broadcast and Television. They graduated from Fat Possum Records to Communion (founded by Mumford & Sons' Ben Lovett) for 2014's delightfully dialed-in Ritual in Repeat, which featured production by Carney, Richard Swift (the Shins) and Jim Eno (Spoon). Despite that one's success, Moore and Riley felt creatively blocked, so they again took to the water, sailing from San Diego to the Sea of Cortez to write 2017's Yours Conditionally, which they released on their own label, Mutually Detrimental. Tennis returned in 2020 with the comparatively hi-fi sounding Swimmer.

    Just stunning, perfect experience.

by Penelope on 3/30/23The Ritz - Raleigh

It was just all around an amazing experience. The band itself was phenomenal and the venue was small but still plenty of room to be comfortable.

    Nice and intimate

by Ana on 12/4/21The Danforth Music Hall - Toronto

Venue is small so the show feels very intimate. Molly Burch (opening act) was great!! And Tennis was incredible!! Both artists played new and old songs which was awesome 🙌🏼

    Interesting

by Barry on 10/16/21The Observatory North Park - San Diego

Great venue, opening act so-so. Tennis is good but repetitious for my liking. Crowd was giving big hoots for her when she just shaked her shoulders. Something missing for me to rave about. Seen hundreds of concerts.

    Great show!

by Jordan on 2/28/20Madrid Theatre - Kansas City

I'm a big fan of Tennis. I expected a good show and my expectations were exceeded. Alaina has an amazing stage presence. She's very funny and her voice is terrific. The lighting was as good as I've seen from a show this size. All my favorite songs were played. Not a single dud in the set. If you like Tennis, go see them!

I FELT NOSTALGIC EVEN THOUGH I'M BORN IN THE YEAR 2000!

    Outstanding breezy fun

by Artbreadman on 5/20/15Great Scott - Allston

Tennis is very cool slightly surf influenced pop fun. Alaina has a lovely vibrato that distinguishes her voice nicely. Patrick channels Duane Eddy with his spot on guitar riffs and rhythms. The lyrics can be surprisingly serious even slightly dark on some tunes but the melodies are a spoon full of sugar that makes the medicine go down. Great Scott isn't much of a venue but it is so small you get a great sense of intimacy.

    Pure Bathing Culture Crushed It!

by JoshuaFletcher on 10/2/14The Sinclair - Cambridge

I could care less about Tennis after this show. Pure Bathing Culture was incredible! It must be embarrassing for Alaina and Patrick of Tennis to have to go on after PBC every night and be shown up like that. To me they should have been the headliner for the show. There are only a handful of groups that are MUST SEE's when they come through Boston, but Sarah and Daniel of PBC make that short list. Thank you for coming through town and killing it (again) and giving this city a break from yet another Dropkick Murphy'and U2 tour.

Sound was off on Vocals, Singer had an attitude.

by RKM384 on 5/13/14Music Hall of Williamsburg - Brooklyn

The sound of the vocals was off two thirds of the concert (tech's fault) and when some people in the crowd mildly pointed it out, she responded with attitude asking them to get closer or right next to the monitor/speaker. The group (not us) was basically in front of her and there was no need for her attitude. Tech turned up her sound right after the song, but by then the event was pretty much over.

    Tennis killed it.

by Chuckito on 8/14/12El Rey Theatre - Los Angeles

They were phenomenal-- I only know the last album, and they played a ton of that, but even the new stuff I didn't know was great. And they were so gracious and happy to be there.

Tennis put on a great show!

by lrez25 on 3/7/12Music Hall of Williamsburg - Brooklyn

Found this show to be extremely fun and had a nice West Coast, 1950s/vacation vibe to the music...crowd was swaying/dancing together by the end. I love this venue!

    I love tennis!

by Alucia on 3/7/12Music Hall of Williamsburg - Brooklyn

The venue was perfect, not too crowded which is always a plus. A couple of sound issues but was fixed once it happened. They didn't perform a few songs I was hoping for - but that goes with them promoting their new album. All in all great night!

    Great live!!

by RockoutBravery on 3/7/12Music Hall of Williamsburg - Brooklyn

I had some doubts about how they would be live, but they put on a great show. They could have played a longer encore though.

Playful show, look fwd to Tennis with practice

by emsd on 3/5/12Bowery Ballroom - NEW YORK

Tennis put on a pretty good show, playing a bulk of their 2 LP catalog. The whole show had a nice, summery pop feel to it. Unfortunately, Tennis doesn't have a very wide range, so some songs just started to sound the same by the end of the night. Luckily, their formula is catchy enough to keep you moving but damn I'd hate to be their drummer. I also wasn't a fan of the fact that Alaina Moore jumped out from behind the keys only when she clearly couldn't play the "harder" stuff and sing simultaneously--it was just so obvious it was a little bit of a let down. I hope in time they become more musicians by choice, rather than chance, and beef up their sound and perfect their instrumentation. Still a good show, considering. Note 1: Had I not seen Body Language at the Mercury after, I probably would be kinder, but that show was so engaging, it sort of blew Tennis out of the water by song 2. Note 2: I missed the first opener but the 2nd opener, Hospitality, put on a really good set with vocals similar to The Sundays or Cocteau Twins. Really interesting sound--I'd like to see them again.
