Over all this was a good show. I've been to orchestra concerts, dances, Kenny Loggins, plays, various sit down and standing performances but this was my first true rock show. Being my very first rock concert, I didn't have a lot to compare it to besides here-say and movies. However, I know good or bad music when I hear it. And I know a good crowd turn out or not when I see it.
Now I'd had some hope for the opening acts since both, especially Mudpuppies, has had a lot of good local reviews and you hear a lot about them on the radio. Unfortunately I was seriously disappointed. Mudpuppies were not equalized and were having other serious equipment and sound issues. As a result they came across as a poorly organized Nervana want-to-be garage band group. They were so bad that I actually borrowed my "date"'s industrial earplugs while they were playing.
The second opening act was a huge improvement. They had an amazing guitarist and wonderful instrumentals. The night started looking up. Then their lead singer opened his mouth. I can only describe his voice as a sick cat having his tail slowly crushed under a rocking chair. It didn't help he was running about the stage like a crazed monkey. His movements seemed so jerky and forced, he looked like he was having mild seizures. I honestly feel this band has a lot of potential... if they replace their lead singer.
I was leery after how poorly the opening acts played on how Tantric would sound. There are many bands that sound great in the studio but horrible live. The first song they played left me excited and seriously impressed. Their music sounded different then it does recorded, but still good. They were well timed and in tune with each other, even teasing and playing around with each other on stage without interrupting the music. Their lead singer has a wonderfully growly, deep voice and an excellent stage presence. He could move about and interact smoothly and naturally, playing to the crowd well. The lead guitarist was also a camera hog, but in a good way, also playing to the crowd and striking many awesome poses for the various photographers. Their violinist, the not as much into the crowd, was defiantly into his music and a real treat to watch and hear.
I actually felt sorry for Tantric though, having to play to such a poor turn out. The room was not even a fraction filled and many of the fans were completely wasted before the opening acts were completed. For an all ages show, there was indeed fans from across the age board. I saw several children under the age of 12 as well as two very elderly couples. In that respect it was a good mix though with so many drunks, i was a little worried about the younger portions of the crowd. Though incredibly small, the crowd responded well to prompts from the band and tried their best to be enthusiastic. Unfortunately they fell short. Only one mosh pit that lasted no more then a few seconds, no dancing to speak off really and only a small portion right in front would jump and wave their arms in the air. There was some crowd surfing though, but again only in one small pocket area.
Despite the small turn out, Tantric was good to it's fans, signing autographs after the show. They took the time to talk with the fans, joking and dispensing good will all around.
