TALIB KWELI IN CONCERT:

When it comes to socially conscious hip hop, Talib Kweli is in a class all by himself. Combining a distinctly stylish delivery, a gift for intricate rhymes, and a passionate political message, his expertly produced tracks are just as likely to inspire debate as they are dancing. Whether he's collaborating with DJ Hi-Tek or rolling solo, Kweli always delivers a top-notch performance -- which is precisely why fans are so fired up about his 2014 Black Star reunion dates with longtime collaborator Mos Def.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Brooklyn-born rapper Talib Kweli Greene initially broke into the rap game through the Beat Junkies' Lyricist Lounge mixtape project. His subsequent work in Cincinnati with the group Mood resulted in a collaboration with producer Hi-Tek, with whom he has enjoyed a career-spanning creative partnership. While these projects made clear his prodigious talent, it wasn't until he linked up with Mos Def as Black Star that he really achieved widespread success. The critical and commercial success of their debut album Mos Def & Talib Kweli are Black Star played a major role in the record industry's growing recognition of underground hip-hop as a serious force, becoming a genre classic in the process. With six solo records now under his belt and a Black Star reunion hitting venues in 2014, the sky is the limit.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"Never seen Kweli live before, but I'll never forget it. Went out and bought Gutter Rainbows after it, and it's the real deal! Please go support our indie artists!"

"This bought back memories of being a teenager and jamming to REAL MUSIC. It was worth getting home late. Great show. Lots of energy."

"Absolutely amazing! These guys played their hearts out and rocked the place."

    The Waiting game

    by Bigchris20 on 4/11/15Masquerade - Atlanta

First the good, Talib did an excellent job, really enjoyed his performance, Killer Mike was a good unexpected surprise. But that's where praise stop. Everyone else I was unfamiliar with but kept I an open mind. In my opinion Talib should tour with a group of higher caliber performers, the others are more grassroots artists, after FOUR AND A HALF HOURS of open acts my buddy couldn't take anymore and three hours in he left me and I was contemplating eating a bullet! But I was too far in, I've gone too far, I had to see the quest though. Not trying to bash the opening acts but there was very little contrast and variety of material and styles. It was like a 4 hour long Public Enemy song, I love PE but I dont want to hear Fight the Power for 4 straight hours. So 5 and a half hours on my feet (my dawgs were dead, so painful) I couldn't even see the encore and had to leave. Why in Gods name would they open doors at 7 and DJ started to play 830, first act at 9, main act at 11:50 during the middle of the week. But it was nice to see people bring their kids out to a hip hop show with weed in the air, alcohol induced, foul language atmosphere. So I've learned not to show up till 2 hours later.

    The show was so LIVE!!!!

    by Ariej5 on 3/5/14Howard Theatre - Washington

Loved it, Howard theater is an excellent venue. I was up close to all the action and didn't have to strain myself squinting at the performance. All of the DJs were on point. Pharoahe and Kweli blew up the stage. Love, loved it!!!

Talib Kweli is a great rapper and entertainer!

by Avoocadoboy on 3/5/14Howard Theatre - Washington

What a great show! The weather was so bad and we had a long drive from Baltimore. I almost didn't show up but my wife insisted. She was the bigger Talib fan. I am so glad I did. Talib did tracks from almost every album from the Black Star days to the present. He engaged with the audience, sussed what we like and what we wanted to hear. He joked around with the crowd and his performance was on point. I had a great time and am now a Talib Kweli convert! Also, the venue was great. Howard Theater was renovated last year and the inside is nice and classy. Plus the sound system was great. I would come back and see this show in a heartbeat.

by RSAllDay on 10/19/13Music Hall of Williamsburg - Brooklyn

Venue was awesome great crowd but Talib stood us up. Never was a real fan just liked his hit "Get By" but think its lame he didn't show. Probably didn't miss him anyway. Definitely check out the venue if you he a chance though.

    Dilla lives on

by PBell on 2/14/13The Fillmore Detroit - Detroit

I (along with two friends) drove up from Chicago to attend the tribute. We thought that it was an excellent concert. Dilla would have definitely been proud to see how many people appreciated his craft. It's bittersweet that we won't be blessed with any new material, but his legacy continues to live on. I plan on attending again next year.

    Don't waste your money

    by Disappointed85379 on 7/22/12Club Red - Tempe

I got my husband VIP tickets to see Talib Kweli as a Father's Day gift. There was suppose to be an artist meet and greet prior to the start of the show. Fans arrived early and were lined up for the meet and greet only to be told that it was rescheduled for after the show. The show commenced at around 8:30 pm. Talib didn't show up until 12:30 am. It was so hot inside the venue that it was almost intolerable, but the fans hung in there for 4 hours to watch Talib perform for 1 hour. VIP ticket holders then lined up again for the artist meet and greet only to be told that Talib had left the venue because he was sick and would not be doing the meet and greet. Refunds were issued and fans were sent on their merry way. This was a huge disappointment and I will never spend money on another Talib cd or performance etc... Talib you conducted yourself unprofessionally and you lost a fan base here in Arizona. You should have personally let your fans that you were sick and you should have apologized for being so late and not being able to do the meet and greet. Maybe if you conducted yourself in a more professional manner then you would be able to book larger venues than Club Red.

    GREAT!

by indyMOM2012 on 6/12/12The Vogue Nightclub - Indianapolis

The show was great! It was a perfect venue to have a more intimate show. It's just always disappointing to see what little support TRUE hip hop performers get in Indianapolis. On one hand, no complaints because I literally stood less than 10 feet from him during the entire show. I just worry that after awhile artists like Talib Kweli will choose not to come to Indy.

it was terrible. There were so many opening acts (most of whom sucked!) that we had to leave at 11:30 without seeing Talib. I have no idea what time Talib actually started performing, but the opening acts were way too crappy and got to us after 3 hours!

This show was so dope. Statik Selektah brought out Saigon and Skyzoo. Smif n' Wesson, Buckshot, Jean Grae, Pharoahe Monch killed it - Talib Kweli was awesome.

    Greatest MC of All Time

by Anonymous on 5/2/11Vogue Theatre - Indianapolis

What can possibly be said about Talib Kweli that could truly explain his excellence? Nothing really, for that you have to listen to his music. Talib Kweli was the reason I started listening to hip-hop, and he's the biggest reason that I still do. I got to meet him before the show at a meet and greet in a record store. He signed a poster for me, took a picture with me, and we talked for a bit. How many internationally renowned artists do you know who would take the time to pay respect to their fans like that? Then the show at the Vogue was incredible. It's a great venue - not too big or too small, and with good acoustics. The speakers were loud, but not to the point of painful. He had a live band with him (drummer, bassist, and keyboardist/DJ) and it really made his songs sound different but in a good way. It was a fresh take. He performed a lot of crowd-pleasers and was high energy the whole time. No hypemen, no backing tracks, just an amazing artist with a microphone and a beautiful mind. Then he brought out surprise guest Hi-Tek (his producer/MC partner in Reflection Eternal) and the crowd went nuts. My only complaint would be that the opening act, Fred the Godson, was pretty bad, and there was about 45+ minutes between him and Kweli coming on where the house music was godawful (I'm talking Lil Jon and the like).
