Syracuse Orange Football at JMA Wireless Dome

The big, echoing Loud House is one of college sports' most iconic venues, a response to a question that no one was asking, but everyone was delighted to learn the answer to: What would it be like if sports were played in an enormous bubble? Syracuse's football, basketball and lacrosse teams all do battle under the signature inflatable roof of the JMA Wireless Dome. The stadium opened in 1980, with an HVAC company lending its name (but not its air-conditioning units, as many sweaty fans have noticed over the years). Today, the JMA Wireless Dome is the largest domed stadium on any college campus, with a seating capacity for football games of nearly 50,000. In 2018, the university announced it would do away with the bubble roof, replacing it with a fixed roof, parts of which would be translucent.

If you're going to a game, be sure to check out the statue of Syracuse great Ernie Davis, the first black man to win a Heisman Trophy. It's located between the JMA Wireless Dome and the nearby quad. And don't forget to do a Dome Stomp in the channels of the stadium's outer walls. Stand in one of the grooves, jump up and slam your feet on the ground. You'll make your own thunder.

Syracuse Orange Football History

Since its founding in 1889, Syracuse football has racked up more than 700 wins and one consensus national championship (for the 1959 season). More than anything, though, it is best known for the players who've passed through this part of Central New York. Look no further than the guys who've worn Syracuse's No. 44. They include three of the greatest running backs ever to put on cleats: Jim Brown (a lacrosse superstar as well), Ernie "The Elmira Express" Davis and Floyd Little (who broke the rushing records set by Davis and Brown before him).

    What a finish

    by Maggie1968 on 9/20/09Carrier Dome - Syracuse

I knew Syracuse could turn things around this football season and what a game to watch first hand. Had seats almost in the roof but could see everything perfectly and would even sit in that area again. Syracuse fans are the best.

    SU WON!!

by SheilaJ on 9/20/09Carrier Dome - Syracuse

SU is showing a lot of promise this year! They won with a field goal which is how they should have won it against Minn. We want to support the team and coach as they try to build confidence this season. So far they look like they can at least compete. Something we have not seen in Syracuse for a while! Go'Cuse

    SU football is back!

by Flashlight on 9/8/09Carrier Dome - Syracuse

This was the best I've seen SU play since coach Mac era. The players and coaching staff gave it a 100% effort. We do not have the top quality players and we will make mistakes and lose games. The effort and game plan was amazing. The kicking game was awesome, the number of fumbles and peantlies were greatly reduced compared to the last 8 years.

    Great Game!!

by Kaedee on 9/8/09Carrier Dome - Syracuse

Great game by the SU Football team! There are some that call it a lost - but I consider the game A WIN! A very competitive game that brought a community together and on their feet in orange gear - definitely a WIN!! I am looking forward to this season (for the first time in years). Awesome job guys! Hold your heads high! Go Orange!

    SU vs Gophers

by jimmybon on 9/7/09Carrier Dome - Syracuse

Excellent Game! Crowd was terrific. The quality of play be the SU defense was terrific. Much improved! The offense had moments of strength but couldn't sink the putt to save their lives. One has to wonder what might have been if the SU fumble from the first play hadn't resulted in an immediate score once the Gopher offense took the field....

    GREAT!

by bigmanfan on 9/7/09Carrier Dome - Syracuse

Game was great, primarily because Dome was full. Need to keep lowering ticket prices every day until dome is full. $38 until week of game; $15 on Monday, $12 on Tuesday, $9 on Wednesday, $6 on Thursday, $3 on Friday; Free Saturday morning. Wait too long, you get no tickets. As the product gets better, tickets sell sooner and for more money. KEEP THE DOME FULL EVERY WEEK!

The Carrier Dome is on Steroids

    by 1Federalist on 9/7/09Carrier Dome - Syracuse

Upstate New York is the place to live, and The Syracuse Orange are the pulse of the community. I have dominated the social circuit, Albany to Buffalo, since the 80's and have been cheering for the Orange since Jim Boeheim carried them to the Finals in 87 against the immortal Bob Knight. One thing missing from our abundance of scenery, business and beautiful women in Upstate New York is a strong football program possessing the kind of offensive statistics necessary to embarrass loud local youngsters who are chasing after the foreign gods of Alabama, Florida or USC. Coach Marrone and Central New Yorks own prodigal son greg Paulus have the full support of hundreds of thousands of fans who turned out en masse to cheer them on, and the event was electric!! The Carrier Dome roared as the Cuse covered the spread, and I am willing to invest more money in the local economy by buying more tickets and bringing more friends and drinking more off University ave with my community.

    SU is Back

by CoolBarb on 9/7/09Carrier Dome - Syracuse

I was a little leary of printing my tickets and presenting them at the turnstile, but all went well. I also saw many other people with large sheets of paper used as their tickets. Must be the new wave of ticket buying. Game was great with the bonus of overtime. I would do it again

It looks like SU is on its way back. Although they lost in OT, it was an effort that has not been seen in quite some time. I hope this is a sign of things to come!!!

    Cuse Is Definitely Watchable!

by Sheenestevez on 9/6/09Carrier Dome - Syracuse

I went to the Syracuse football opener with an open mind. At least I tried. Yes I was a skeptic, I didn't want to get blown out, I just wanted to be somewhat competitive. To my surprise we were! We played with and were beating a team that had 19 returning starters. Also, Minnesota is one of the better teams in the Big 10. We gave them points as well. Like the first snap of the game when the ball was snapped over our Paulus' head. We also dropped four or five balls that hit the receivers right in the chest. We didn't take too many chances on offense and were very predictable in the second half. You can run only so many slants. All in all however, we were competitive against a solid team and it was an overall good time. We still have a lot of time to improve on however, I can't see why, by next season, we can't be playing for at least a bowl spot. Syracuse football isn't totally back but I feel we are on our way!

    fun back at the dome

    by ace51 on 9/6/09Carrier Dome - Syracuse

great crowd, loud & into it, result obviously disapointing - but signs of life, hope everyone will show back up for the northwestern game & won't be disheartened by either the result yesterday or the expected thrashing in happy valley next sat - northwestern is on par with the gophers so could/should be a good game - lets hope we don't have a noon start, it was a bit steamy yesterday with 48k & nearly 80 sunshiny degrees yesterday
