Surfaces on Tour

Forget the beach, Surfaces bring all the sun and feel-good vibes straight to the club — no matter how dark and crowded it may be. The Texas duo's breezy melodies feel right at home onstage, especially when they add jazzy sax and piano to their soul- and electro-infused pop. The band proved to be natural performers when they quickly grew a following online after releasing their debut album, Surf, in 2017. Consequently, their 2019 Endless Summer tour — put together all on their own, without a manager or booking agent — sold out fast. Still, even as Surfaces' fan base expands, they continue to do things their own way, and that DIY mentality, along with an endlessly optimistic mindset, is infectious both onstage and off.

Surfaces in Concert

Surfaces' kaleidoscopic mix of sunny bedroom pop, reggae, soul, hip-hop and electronic offer a fresh — and much needed — dose of positive energy all around. The Texas duo of Colin Padalecki and Forrest Frank first came together online. While still in high school, Padalecki started producing music, bringing in his cousin Alexa to sing along. Once at Texas A&M University, he began posting his songs online and caught the ear of Frank. The two got together to jam, and eventually Frank invited Colin and Alexa to record on his houseboat in Seattle, which resulted in Surfaces' first track, the jazzy, blissed-out jam "Be Alright." From that point, Padalecki and Frank went to work on their 2017 debut album, the self-produced Surf, with Frank taking the lead on vocals. As their music quickly gained traction online, they continued to keep their DIY approach, all the way down to their minimalist, pastel-hued album covers, designed by Padalecki. Turning down major-label offers, they released their second self-produced album, Where the Light Is, in 2019, and then set out for their sold-out Endless Summer tour. Continuing on that success, Surfaces came back with album No. 3, Horizons, just a year later.

    Surfaces St. Louis

by Jude1095 on 11/22/21The Pageant - St Louis

Decent show. We had seen them at Lollapalooza, so we know they were good live, but this performance honestly felt really rushed and a bit sterile. We felt like they were in a big hurry to 'just get through it'. We're still fans of the band, just a bit disappointed. And I do truly appreciate that they keep it clean! The two guys accompanying them are super talented!

    AMAZING!

by Talia on 11/21/21The Sylvee - Madison

We had an amazing time at the concert! The venue was the perfect size. The whole crowd had an amazing time! Mills did a wonderful job opening and being involved with the crowd. Seeing Surfaces live was really great! The stage had an adorable summer set up, that went along with the album! I’m so glad I went to see them in Madison!!!

    Surfaces was awesome!

by AdamB on 11/17/21The Pageant - St Louis

The show was really awesome. They started about 20 minutes earlier than the scheduled 9:00pm showtime but the whole band worked the crowd great and had really strong energy. I enjoyed seeing Surfaces even more than I anticipated and will definitely see them when they come back to St. Louis again.

    Intimate venue but no cover

by kat on 11/17/21The Pageant - St Louis

Because it was a small band and a relatively small crowd the venue felt pretty intimate. The entry through the bar was simple and quick. I wish masks were enforced a little more but I liked how vaccines were required to attend. The drinks at the bar were overpriced. We were disappointed about there not being an opening act/band. But overall it was a good experience and I would come back to the pageant.

    Felt rushed

by skaitordie on 11/17/21The Pageant - St Louis

The entire concert lasted a little less than 40 minutes... Both of the show openers had canceled but I understand that that can't be controlled. Surfaces on the other hand... yikes. It didn't really feel like there was much engagement from them to the crowd which made the concert feel less special. The majority of the crowd was having a good time, but I'm definitely used to the performers breaking between songs and trying to engage more with the audience. Surfaces literally transitioned from song to song without even pausing in between. Knowing that both of their openers had canceled, I feel like they could have tried harder to give a full concert. I like their music, but as performers, I was really disappointed in Surfaces. I think I would have been less upset if their opening acts had shown up because I am a fan of both Khai Dreams and Public Library Commute. Don't think I would see Surfaces again in concert... I basically paid $30 for a 30-minute performance..

    Short show

by Craig R on 11/17/21The Pageant - St Louis

Show was supposed to start around 7:30, according to my original ticket. Show didn’t start until 9, and there were no opening bands. Surfaces only played for a little over an hour, and seemed VERY rushed. It was very strange and didn’t sit well with a lot of the crowd.

    Finally

by ash w on 11/17/21The Pageant - St Louis

The main performance was amazing, Surfaces really knew how to bring in the crowd and make it super enjoyable. The only issue was waiting for a little over 2 hrs due to the openers cancelling and us (the concert goers) were unaware until we were already standing around after waiting outside in the cold temperatures. But as mentioned before Surfaces really understood how to come out and make a great time of a bad situation.

    A great time!

by Happy Mama on 11/16/21House of Blues Cleveland - Cleveland

First time at House of Blues in Cleveland and my daughter, her friend, and I LOVED it! We ate dinner at the restaurant first. The food was fantastic! Service was great! We loved the venue! It was small and intimate. My daughter was thrilled she could see the band and even more thrilled they could see her dancing in the balcony! It was a wonderful show and we hope to see Surfaces again when they visit Cleveland!

    Another awesome concert at Newport!

by Surfaces Fan on 11/16/21Newport Music Hall - Columbus

The surfaces were great! The main event started at 7:45pm so I’m glad we got there when we did. The Newport staff was great about finding us accessible seating for my temporary disability, even though I’m not registered with the ADA!

    mediocrity

the opener didn’t show up so they didn’t start for an extra hour and a half. they didn’t play any of the songs expected and left after an hour

    Great show but bad seats

by MK on 11/15/21House of Blues Cleveland - Cleveland

House of Blues Cleveland should let u know if the seat view is obstructed before you purchase. Especially for $80 balcony tickets. Had to upgrade to box seats to see entire stage for another $80 per person. What a rip off. Thank goodness the show was amazing for my kids.

by LJ on 11/15/21House of Blues Cleveland - Cleveland

Surfaces is epic in the fact that they bring some of the best energy to a show I’ve ever seen! Up there with the greats for sure. The relaxed nature made the show chill and will definitely see them again ASAP!

    Great show/security not so much

by Nikki on 11/15/21House of Blues Cleveland - Cleveland

Overall great show I enjoyed everything up until a drunk woman pushed her way to the front at grinder on me and my sister. We told security but they didn’t really do anything even after we told them she was threatening to fight everyone around her to get the the stage.

    vibes = immaculate

by cj on 11/14/21Newport Music Hall - Columbus

first time seeing surfaces live and they are so much fun! they sound amazing! venue was great too. pretty small but it had a good overall concert vibe. it was pouring the rain outside so they sent workers to check vax cards and put wristbands on to make the process go faster and keep everyone out of the rain. very very nice staff. overall 11/10 experience

    Amazing!

by AG on 11/14/21The Fillmore Charlotte - Charlotte

Great concert! Live sound was amazing and set list was great! Band even dressed for Halloween - fun :-) Venue was nice, but admitting/entry process at venue was extremely inefficient and slow.
