    Best Yet

by dadumdumdada on 12/12/10Magic Stick - Detroit

In a year in which even the Stooges, whose fan base was centered around Detroit in their heyday, have ignored us, it was nice that Superchunk remembered that we have a skyline too. Opening with "100,000 Fireflies" was a nice touch, as it's a song that they themselves did not write, and is indicative of their helping hand approach to bands that they appreciate. They tended to play their newer, as well as their slower, songs earlier in the set, whipping up the audience into mass, frenzied pogoing towards the end. The fourth time that I've seen them at the Magic Stick, and the seventh overall, it was easily the best performance by them that I witnessed. The near-decade long absence didn't diminish their performance capabilities one iota, and may have even helped to recharge their batteries. Their performance of "Detroit Has A Skyline Too" was, to use a cliche, incindiary. They did a good cross-section of their vast repertoire, although they tended to play the singles, and I wish that they'd done at least one more song from Majesty Shredding, especially during the encore. Performing a Negative Approach song to open the encore was an nice touch and, although I'm still wondering what connection the Revolting Cocks have to Detroit (as part of a stated "Detroit tribute"), "God-Damned Son Of A Bitch" went over very well with the rioting audience. I danced until I was exhausted and sweaty, and then I danced some more. My voice was horse from shouting-along. It seemed like I'd just wiutnessed something very special, which, of course, I had.

    Superchunk in Tampa

by Neurogolfer on 12/6/10CZAR YBOR - Tampa

Superchunk was as good as they were the first time I saw them in Gainesville 17-18 years ago. I saw Mac and Laura in foyer of Columbia Restaurant fiddling through their menus very comfortably and the whole bandwas bantering on stage like four old friends. Great set of old and new songs a few surprises. My only negative is they didn't play long enough for me to hear all of the songs i WOULD HAVE WANTED TO HEAR BUT THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN A three hour set (accidental capitalization). I'll be there next ready to pogo as long as they still tour and I can still jump.

    Superchunk at Czar Ybor

by eastbayrey on 12/6/10CZAR YBOR - Tampa

I've been a Superchunk fan as long as there has been a Superchunk and I was really looking forward to seeing them for the first time since 1994. I drove 4 hours to catch the show... and I wish I hadn't. I am around the same age as members of the band, but it felt as if they are aging much faster than I am. Their music focused mostly on their softer, all up beat simple register stuff that just puts me to sleep. It's as if they have forgotten how to play their old catalog. I got to enjoy 3 songs from their early days (which took 1.5 hours to hear) and then I'd had enough and left the gig. The venue was great and the crown was good, but the P.A. left a lot to be desired. The house system must not have had enough juice because everything sounded muddy and blown out. I'll be back to Czar Ybor next time I'm in Tampa for a night of clubing, but that was my last Superchunk show.

Superchunk still sounds fantastic and full of energy. Opening act - Titus Andronicus - was quite a revelation. Both bands should not be missed.

Great performance by band plagued by horrible PA

by saveitforlater on 12/6/10CZAR YBOR - Tampa

I have seen Superchunk several times and they always deliver. This show was no exception. Excellent performance. I was pretty excited about checking them out at a new venue, but ended up disappointed. The room at Czar is an acoustic challenge and the PA that was setup just didn't cut the mustard. It sounded like the only thing that was on was the monitors. Halfway through the show I moved closer to the stage and it sounded better, but still pretty weak. Not sure if the sound man was not equipped for the gig or if the room was just that much of a challenge, but I wouldn't pay to see another show there.

    fantastic

by nixxistix on 12/3/10First Avenue - Minneapolis

Well workth the 9 year wait. It's nice to see bands that still know how to bring the rock and believe in what they do, without caring about any stupid trends or gimmicks.

by jean31ius on 10/22/10The Music Box - Hollywood

wow wow wow... this show was out of control good!!! I am new to LA and this was the first time i have seen them play out here.. from NYC and saw them play about 15 times in my 31 years.. this was one of the best shows yet! they did a double encore and played some amazing old hits in conjunction with some ehhh new ones.. (well we could have gone without Nu Bruises) The ones from majesty Shredding were great... it was some old/new ones I could have done without.. but it didn't matter- show was sick! so great and superchunk just never gets old! they rock as if they were still 20!!! Woo hooo!

    They Still Got It

by Sonicgrub on 10/21/10The Music Box - Hollywood

To see Mac, the lead singer and guitarist for Superchunk, pogo around the stage with youthful energy and abandon, it would be easy to forget it's 2010. I saw them many times in the 1990s and it felt and sounded like the best moments from then. They are still the best pogoing band to see. They're song selection was nicely balanced with old and new. The Vaselines were surprisingly good. "Turnaround" was the highlight. Telekinesis are young and very promising. The singer is also the drummer, which I've always found appealing.

    Teenage Fanclub and Superchunk

by Valtalks on 10/20/10Showbox at the Market - Seattle

This show was excellent. The first time I saw both of these bands was in 1992- Teenage Fanclub was headlining and I'd come to see them. I've always been a fan and I've seen them live 9 or 10 times total, but this was the best they've ever sounded. The set was well-chosen and effective- it made me excited about their new album, while also connecting me to so many past songs that I loved in high school and still love now. I'm pleased Teenage Fanclub have endured while staying true to themselves. As for Superchunk, I've never been a big fan, but they were every bit as energetic- literally, bouncy- as they were in 1992. My only regret is both bands' sets weren't longer.

    Great to Have Them Back

by Chunkaway on 10/17/10Wonder Ballroom - Portland

What a great frigfin' show! The last time I saw Superchunk was in 2001, so I was a little apprehensive about what the time off might bring to the band. Nothing to worry about here, they rocked the Wonder Ballroom! I might have wished for more songs from 1994 to present, but they were terrific. Wurster was pounding on the tubes with the crazed, wild man hair and facial expressions. Loved it! I also need to acknowledge how great Teenage Fanclub were. Their harmonies were spot on and the band had catchy tune after catchy tune. They were stellar. Telekenisis (sp?) were fantastic- I went home and downloaded some of their songs that night. Very, very good band!

Superchunk was amazing! They are a timeless band and remain true to their origins even 20 years after their inception. I will continue to pogo along at Superchunk shows until we are all old and grey... someday they will put Mick Jagger and Keith Richards to shame!

    Superchunk

by GarthFrundlessenberg on 10/3/10Music Hall of Williamsburg - Brooklyn

A terrific show. I've seen 'Chunk about 20 times since the 90's, and this might have been in the top 3 of all of them.

    Eh.

by Anonymous on 9/26/10Trocadero - Philadelphia

The location was an old-timey movie theater with very little seating, and even less air-conditioning. Had the crowd not been such a mellow group of 20-45 year old hipsters, it could have gotten even more uncomfortably warm in the venue than it already was. The bands were okay. Jenny and Johnny were easy to listen too, but not especially exciting. I was primarily there to see Jenny Lewis, but Superchuck wasn't the worst thing I've ever heard. Their music was a dated, early 90's college-rock sound. Nothing mind-blowing about the event as a whole, and wouldn't go out of my way to go see any of the band again.

    Superchunk still amazing...

by chronicyouth on 9/24/10Trocadero - Philadelphia

Jenny and Johnny were a huge draw for me to this show. They played almost their entire new album, which is great and I highly recommend you pickup if you are a fan of Jenny Lewis's solo stuff or her band Rilo Kiley. As for Superchunk, I have been a fan for a while and couldn't have been more excited to see them live again and hear their new material. The new stuff meshed perfectly with the old and there was a good bit of it in the live show, The banter was genuinely funny, but not extensive, mostly just stuck to cracking out the rock. A rousing performance of "Hyper Enough" got the slightly subdued Philadelphia crowd pogoing like it was 1991 and they were touring in support of No Pocky for Kitty. There were a few songs I would have liked to see that were missing but overall, fantastic.
