About

Sunset Rollercoaster are a Taiwanese synth-pop five-piece with funk and jazz influences. Their name came from a Photo Booth picture the band took for their MySpace profile back in 2009, which had a roller coaster set in front of a background sunset.

Formed in Taipei the late '00s, Sunset Rollercoaster consists of Kuo-Hung Tseng (vocals, guitar), Hung-Li Chen (bass), Shao-Hsuan Wang (keyboard), Tsun-Lung Lo (drums), and Hao-Ting Huang (saxophone), plus former member Shih-Wei Huang (percussion). They formed the group after watching classic Velvet Underground videos online. Though Taiwan is a Mandarin-speaking country, the band primarily sings in English, which lead singer Kuo Kuo has said allows the group to speak indirectly.

"That's a unique thing in a Mandarin-speaking world because we are not foreigners. We are local," Long told the Boston Herald in 2018. "Not using a language that people are familiar with gives the audience space to interpolate, to imagine what the lyrics mean. In Chinese, it would be too direct. We want to create a world where people have space to create their own interpretations."

Initially formed as a trio -- Tseng Kuo Hung, Kevin Lee and Lo Zun Long -- Sunset Rollercoaster released their debut album, Bossa Nova, in 2011. Following their first record, the group would disband for a few years, with Kuo Kuo and Lo Tsun forming another band, Forests.

Sunset Rollercoaster soon reunited, however, and in 2018 they released their sophomore effort, Cassa Nova. The summer prior, they performed at SummerStage in New York's Central Park (their North American debut) as part of the Taiwanese Waves music festival in 2017. They followed that up with a tour of North America in 2018.

In 2019, Sunset Rollercoaster shared a concept EP, Vanilla Villa. The following year, Sunset Rollercoaster released their third album, Soft Storm, which was recorded with Los Angeles guitarist/singer/songwriter Ned Doheny (Don Henley and Glenn Frey of the Eagles, J.D. Souther, Linda Ronstadt, and Jackson Browne). In 2020, NME ranked Soft Storm as the fourth best Asian album that year.

In 2021, the band composed three original songs featured in the anime program "Sonny Boy."

WATER SHOULD NOT BE SO EXPENSIVE!!

by Ty on 11/5/22Constellation Room - Santa Ana

Sunset rollercoaster and Michael Seyer were amazing, they played all the right songs and the venue was nice, albeit a little warm. I can’t believe 2 normal-sized bottles of water are $9. Venues need to be more aware of this. Of course people are going to be hot after being in a crowd for over an hour. Paying $9 for my girlfriend and I not to pass out is just ridiculous. Shame on you Roxy Theatre.
