About the Sun Belt Conference Basketball Tournament

The Sun Belt Conference Basketball Tournament is an annual event held in Southern U.S. cities by the men's and women's college teams to decide the winner of the 12-team league, with the champ landing an automatic spot in the national NCAA Division I Basketball Tournament. Each season, 10 teams from the conference are paired up in single-elimination brackets, in a format just like the NCAA Tournament, and they play multiple rounds until a winner is crowned. The Sun Belt Conference's current configuration includes Georgia State University, Appalachian State University, Coastal Carolina University, University of Texas at Arlington and others.

In 2021, the Sun Belt Conference's Men's and Women's Basketball Championships are set to be decided in Pensacola, Florida. The tournament's first-round and second-round games are played at Hartsell Arena, on the campus of Pensacola State College, and the 10,000-seat Pensacola Bay Center. As the tournament progresses, semifinal and championship games are also played at the Bay Center.

Sun Belt Conference Basketball Tournament History

On the men's side, the Sun Belt Conference Basketball Tournament first took place in the 1976-77 season, the Sun Belt Conference's inaugural season. The winner of that year's tournament, UNC Charlotte, ended up reaching the Final Four in the NCAA Tournament. Starting with the 1982-83 season, the women's basketball teams also held their own tournament. Over the years, The Sun Belt Conference Basketball Tournament has been held in various cities and arenas, mainly concentrated in places where Sun Belt Conference teams play, although starting in 2021 and through 2025, the conference takes place in Pensacola, Florida.

On both the men's and women's sides, former Sun Belt Conference member Western Kentucky won the tournament nine times. More recently, current member the South Alabama Jaguars won the men's title in 1989, 1991, 1997, 1998 and 2006, while the women's basketball teams from former Sun Belt members Louisiana Tech and Middle Tennessee won the tournament seven times each.

    Disappointed

by Mrs. H on 3/8/22Pensacola Bay Center - Pensacola

Our tickets were for a 5:00 p.m. game. We weren't allowed to enter the arena until 4:50 p.m. Also, we paid extra for floor seats. But they weren't floor seats. They were behind a barrier and it was hard to see. No signage in the arena as to where anything was. Shouldn't have paid extra for VIP when we got nothing for that!!

    Get the floor seats!

by Brittany Pettinato on 3/6/22Pensacola Bay Center - Pensacola

My 12 year old son and I went on a Thursday night and had so much fun! I purchased floor seats and everyone around us were friendly regulars. The staff were all helpful and there was a private concession area on the floor level. Watching the players so close was incredible for our first game.

    Sunbelt Conference

by JimF on 3/20/19UNO Lakefront Arena - New Orleans

The Sunbelt Conference was held at the UNO campus Lakefront Arena. It was very easy to access and we had a handicapped wheelchair attendee. The basketball game was very sparsely attended and we had plenty of empty seats.

This was the best ever college basketball game

by ARbasketballfan on 3/8/10Summit Arena - Hot Springs

Great Venue and events two games going on in a convention center in hotsprings, beautiful city, very nice, clean and easily accesible venue, The Main arena had all chair backs along with the convention center court that suprised me by having temporary chair backs which were very nice also. The games wow talk about some competitive athletes several games were decided on last second buzzer shots. Great atmosphere the organization running these events did a great job keeping the fans entertained and kept the program going. The one negative was the ASU vs ULAR game great game except for the Ref's who called 64 something fouls so the game drug on but the fans were into it and it went into overtime. ASU brought alot of great fans which made it an incredible atmosphere. Ready to see the next round and come back next year.

    Womens quarter finals

by hsvfan on 3/8/10Summit Arena - Hot Springs

I saw one outstanding game and two prteey good one's. There are two courts here so you can go from one game to the other, which I did. Great fun. I had not watched much women's BB, but these games are really fun to watch. Not a lot of razzle-dazzle above the rim, but, sound fundamental BB. A real clinic.
