Summer Symphony had a wonderful variety of music

by KRWRW on 5/31/16Memphis Botanic Garden - Memphis

The title of the inaugural event, Summer Symphony in the Gardens, is easily confused with our longstanding Symphony in the Gardens held at The Dixon Gallery and Gardens. Need a unique title. The one thing missing was a music program of the pieces being performed. For what we payed for an 8 top, we all expected a program either at the table or handed out at the entrance gates.

    #thereal901Orchestra Inaugural Event

by MsMaryS on 5/31/16Memphis Botanic Garden - Memphis

So after 39 years, Memphis in May ditched the free Sunset Symphony as the closing event for its monthlong festival in favor of the ticketed 901 Fest, leaving Memphis Symphony Orchestra fans high and dry. What's an orchestra to do? Hold their own concert in the lovely surroundings of the Memphis Botanic Garden! There's a great stage, easy parking, super sight lines, and great sound. We opted for middle tier tix: not picnic table ($187.) but lawn picnic ($75.) Price included 2 drinks and heavy h'ors d'ourvres. We brought lawn chairs and a picnic basket. General admission tix were $25. The music was WONDERFUL. The orchestra was in fine form, and the crowd- yes, crowd, was substantial. Guest singer Susan Marshall and her band were a super surprise. I hope this event continues for 39+ years!
