Sum 41 in Concert

Two-time Juno Award winners Sum 41 rode the crest of the nu-metal wave in the early 2000s with a catchy blend of punk, rap and metal elements woven into their music. They were able to pinpoint some of the most infectious characteristics of popular genres and meld them into a hybrid that won them throngs of fans who were eager for more. Tickets to their concerts traditionally sell out fast, as fans don't want to miss the chance to jump up with the band and request songs through the extra microphone that seems to just float around the stage. The band orchestrates this circus-like scenario night after night on tour and even indulges in a cover or two by Judas Priest or Iron Maiden —complete with drum solos. Incidentally, the band was lucky enough to borrow drummer Tommy Lee from Motley Crue for a stretch between 2001 and 2003. Their August 2011 release Sum 41 Live at the House of Blues boasts plenty of live concert antics and features the hit songs "Underclass Hero," "Motivation" and "Fat Lip."

The band hails from Ajax, Ontario, Canada and is fronted by lead singer, rhythm guitarist and primary songwriter Deryck Whibley. They began in 1996 as a NOFX cover band called Kaspir but eventually changed their name for a high-profile show opening for Supernova. They signed an international record deal with Island Records in 1999, which resulted in their 2001 debut release All Killer, No Filler. They embarked on a relentless journey of touring and songwriting that led to the 2002 release of Does This Look Infected?, 2004's Chuck, 2007's Underclass Hero and the 2011 release Screaming Bloody Murder, with subsequent tours. Sum 41 continues this tradition with a string of Canadian tour dates scheduled for the spring of 2014.

Sum 41 is touring on the Rockstar Energy Drink DISRUPT Festival in 2019. The touring festival features unique lineups in each city, including The Used, Thrice, Circa Survive, Sum 41, The Story So Far, Atreyu, Sleeping With Sirens, Andy Black, and more.

    meh.

by Anonymous on 11/26/12Starland Ballroom - Sayreville

The event was changed to stone pony on a Sunday night, which isn't anyone's fault but hurricane Sandy's, but the stone pony is not a venue for anyone shorter than say 6' tall. Besides that, Sum41 was supposed to play "Does This Look Infected" in its entirety (the 10yr anniversary of said album tour,) but stopped after the 6/12th song. Boo. I was very disappointed. They also played 3 new songs which was very annoying considering they didn't fall under the "all the hits" or "Does This Look Infected" categories. This will probably be the last time I go to a Sum41 specific event.

    amazingness

by WonderlandDreams on 11/25/12Crocodile Rock - Allentown

Although I would have liked to seen opening bands that I had heard of before but regardless Sum 41 was A-freaking-mazing! They played both old and new songs and their set list was awesome! I saw them at warped tour in 2010? (maybe 2011) and they only got to play maybe 3 songs but here they played at least 10. I was in heaven! They also had a huge mosh pit going that was one of the best pits I've seen!

I had a really great time at the Paradise Rock Club. Sum 41 was amazing and they put on one hell of a show! The opening act IAMDYNAMITE was awesome too! The atmosphere was great, beer was cheap, only thing that was bad was the curfew was at 10pm.

    Just awesome

by Residentscumfuk on 11/23/12The Great Hall in Union Station - Hartford

The opening acts were pretty good but don't even compare to sum 41. Everything they played was great and once security gave up on stopping the noshing it was just hectic, crazy, and just flat out fun. Best concert I've ever been to.

    Disappointing

by MilwMom on 11/21/12Paradise - Boston

I own every one of their albums, and consider them a band with tremendous depth. They arrived late - and ended on time, so playlist was not as long as what I've seen on other venues. They spent too much time imo on audience participation - it was a big detraction from the songs by breaking them up with standing on the speakers and trying to get people to clap. The other really distracting thing was the lead man Deryck. I'm not sure if he was going for a 'Heat Miser' look, or the Joker - or maybe he was just stoned; so the performance aspect took all the points down for me.

    by Seawolf2012 on 11/19/12The Paramount - Huntington

The show was great. Sum 41 was entertaining and played great live. Only negative is I wish they had played a little longer, but by the time they actually came on it was after 10:30 pm already. The opening acts were very good as well.

    Outstanding

    by Devs77 on 11/18/12The Paramount - Huntington

Ive been a sum 41 fan since i was 8 years old, and ive waited for them to play in my area for 10 years. That builds up a lot of expectations on my end. And they surpassed my expectations. They came and played every song on does this look infected right off the bat , absolutely rocking the place. People next to me were going crazy and i was no acception. After a quick switiching of guitars from deryck and cone, they were playing their newest songs and quick covers including beastie boys, queen, and jack white. Cone and deryck have been my favorite rockers alongside josh homme and they absolutely killed it. I wasnt sure what to expect in sound quality going in their as when you watch on the internet they always seem to be focused on crowd energy. However, they sounde absolutely phenominal. Derycks distorted riffs had a clear conscience and Cones bass had a perfect tone. One of the best concerts ive been too

    Sum 41 is amazing live!

    by Kstyle86 on 11/18/12The Paramount - Huntington

Sum 41 is like a fine wine, getting better with age. Their performance was flawless. If you don't like crowd surfing or moshing I reccomend seats rather than standing room only.

    Crowd was fun

by crashed3cars on 11/16/12Irving Plaza powered by Klipsch - New York

They were good, but not great! They just don't sound great live. It's a lot of yelling. On the other hand, the energy of the crowd was amazing. The fans themselves are VERY FUN and VERY HAPPY! Crowd surfing, and HAPPY mosh pit is a LOT of fun! The sound systme at Irving Plaze is pretty bad. Overall they are a fun band with a fun following though mediocre musicians. The crowd did not seem to mind. My favorite song is Pieces and they didn't play it. They played a Cover of We will Rock You by Queen and Fat Lip for their Encore. They finished with some random singing some song I never heard...that was totally bizarre.

    Sum 41 plays out myrtle.

by Bartimus on 7/17/09House of Blues Myrtle Beach - Myrtle Beach

Excellent performance from the boys. Good sound quality and Deryck can still belt out that punk. Guitar sound was a bit weak, but that was probably someone on the mixer's fault. They had a lot of crowd interaction, even brought 4 people on stage to see the show from the curtains, and brought another kid on to show Deryck how much he "sucks on guitar." It was a weekday venue so the capacity of HoB was small, they didn't even have the second floor open. The show felt a lot more personal with the amount of people there. Another great surprise from the show was the opening act of Frank Turner, who played an outstanding solo set.
