About

SUGAR RAY IN CONCERT:

Sugar Ray virtually dominated late-'90s airwaves with breezy, SoCal-filtered pop earworms like "Fly" and "Every Morning." Fifteen years later they're still going as strong as ever, hitting the road to headline the 2014 Under The Sun Tour with fellow '90s favorites Smashmouth and Blues Traveler. As far as frontmen go, they don't make 'em more charismatic than Mark McGrath — fans lucky enough to catch the band live on their last tour were floored by his energy and charisma, setting expectations sky high for their upcoming shows.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Sugar Ray formed in Newport Beach in 1986, initially playing the unique brand of funk metal heard on their 1995 debut LP Lemonade and Brownies. While the album garnered them attention in alternative circles, it wasn't until they adopted a poppier sound for 1997's Floored that they really cracked things wide open, topping charts in the US and Canada with the ubiquitous decade smash "Fly." 1999 follow-up album 14:49 was an even bigger success, going triple platinum with infectious singles like "Every Morning" and "Someday." Throughout the '00s, the band continued to find success, releasing three albums and touring extensively. In 2014, they hit the road for the Under the Sun Tour, joining bands like Smashmouth and Uncle Kracker for a seriously satisfying dose of '90s nostalgia.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"... Sugar Ray by far made the show! Upbeat, got the crowd moving! Seemed like he was having a blast singing!"

"... they seriously kicked ass on stage! The whole concert was just purely entertaining and listening to their '90s hits was awesome!"

"The venue was intimate and Sugar Ray made us want to dance all night. Mark McGrath is an awesome performer and interacts well with the audience. The new music was terrific and fresh and the oldies still sound great."

by celt365 on 7/29/09Emerald Theatre - Mt. Clemens

I've grown up listening to Sugar Ray, and have been a fan all along. This was my first time getting to see them live, and it was probably one of the best concerts I've ever been too. I look forward to getting to see them perform again someday.

Sugar Ray at the Emerald Theatre

by Gawn2theDawgs on 7/29/09Emerald Theatre - Mt. Clemens

Bottom line, this show was incredible. The band came out ready to rock and that's exactly what they did. The crowd was into it and that made for an energy that was infectious. Mark McGrath is a great front man and proved it by engaging the crowd and taking the show to a level of excitement that was enjoyed by all.

    Sugar Ray

Sugar Ray was great and so was Aimee Allen, the other opening group was a waste of time. The show started way too late for a weeknight - but it was really great anyway. Just really hard to get up for work the next day. Wish he would have played more from his new album!!!

    Sugar Ray was Amazing!!!

by ShredBette on 7/18/09Grizzly Rose - Denver

Saw Sugar Ray at the Grizzley Rose. They were energetic like they always are. Mark McGrath had the audience rockin' to all there big hits. Would have liked to hear more than one song off the new album though. Hope they come back to Denver again sooner than later.

    Loved the show

by ATHP on 7/17/09The Joint at Hard Rock Hotel Las Vegas - Las Vegas

I loved the show. The venue is not necessarily the best. You can't really get a good closeup of the stage at the Pool at Hard Rock. The straight on views are a long distance from the stage.

So when i saw that Sugar Ray was coming to my city i got all excited! And i knew exactly who i was going to take..... my mom! When we got there, there wasnt a line which was nice. Then we had quite a few bloody marys and enjoyed the concert. Sugar Ray hasnt lost their on stage coolness. It was a great evening with my mom. She and I had a blast!

    sugar ray still has it.

by m4rau on 7/16/09Silver Legacy Casino - Reno

The show was to launch their u.s. tour and to promote their new album music for cougars. While their musical style did not change with their new material. it still feels fresh for todays summer music market. Boardwalk is definitely a winner. They also remininsed about being a band for the past 20 years and provided the excited crowd with their big hits. Song like everyday, fly, every morning and the remake of is she really going out with him, kept everybody dancin. If smooth sounds and rythums are you thing don't miss them. Mark mc grath had everybody enjoying the moment.

    Sugar Ray rocks the house!

by norcal707 on 7/16/09Silver Legacy Casino - Reno

It was our first time to see Sugar Ray. He was friggin' awesome! Very entertaining and personable! Played all our favorite songs and some new ones too. I was up dancing the whole time! Defenitely will be buying the new CD. Silver Legacy is one of the best places to see a show. It's a smaller venue that makes show personal. Music sounds awesome and there are huge video screens to for your viewing pleasure. I would see Sugar Ray again, and again.

    Sugar Ray rocked!

by tab60 on 7/16/09Silver Legacy Casino - Reno

Concert was great fun - from a mom that went with her 20 year old daughter. This was the second time we've seen Sugar Ray and my daughter was 10 the first time! Well-rounded, appealing show with Sugar Ray's old hits, their new songs and songs by others. I really like that Mark McGrath makes the audience a big part of the show -- he appreciates his fans and shows it. Ticket prices weren't too bad either; better than most. I only wish Silver Legacy would make a few changes: improve the sound system, use more risers for stepped-up seating (like they have in the past), and lower their drink prices!!

by Realityone22 on 7/15/09Silver Legacy Casino - Reno

The show was great! It was a very small venue so getting up to the front near Mark was easy for everyone. One of the best concerts I have seen for just an all around fun time.

    SugarRay performs nonstop incredible entertainment

by Sugar21 on 7/15/09Silver Legacy Casino - Reno

I would go to another Sugar Ray concert again in a heartbeat. I've listened to them all through their musical career. They just keep getting better. Love the Newport Beach sound they have created and kept strong! And the live show, INCREDIBLE! They pack an amazing full band sound coupled with terrific lyrics and great energy. All age groups attended, which was really nice to see as well. Some of the young kids were even invited up on stage for a little Karaoke. What fun. The band really encourages particpation of the audience and most of us couldn't get close enough. Thanks to Mark McGrath, who told the bouncers to let us all get as close to the stage as we could. Mark McGrath still takes your breath away!

    Sugar Ray's hot!

by Sofablue on 7/14/09Grizzly Rose - Denver

Mark McGrath and the other members of Sugar Ray were in great form at the concert. It was like a party! You could get very close, since the venue was a bar. I had never been to the Grizzly Rose, and I was still expecting some kind of concert seating, even though it was general admission. But there was a dance floor and tables along the side and back. The ticket said 6 p.m., so we arrived then, figuring the opening band would start then. No. It was just when the doors opened. We got some food and drinks and settled in to wait. The opening band didn't go on until 8:45 and Sugar Ray came on at 10:00! We had been there a long, long time, and been under constant supervision of the waitress. (No wonder the tickets were so reasonable- they made up for it in drinks) When the band did come on, everyone left their seat. There were perhaps 300 people there- less than I figured on. People were dancing to the back of the floor. There were people of all ages and types there. Mark was very cordial, with only a few cuss words. He talked about getting older, and how things change. He talked about focussing on what you really want from life. They have a new album coming out, and I can't wait to get it. They sang all their oldies and really seemed to enjoy themselves. Now that I am more familiar with the venue, I'll be able to plan better.
