SUFJAN STEVENS IN CONCERT:

For the past 15 years, indie folk hero Sufjan Stevens has been an emblem of genre-busting creativity and perpetual sonic reinvention. As his palette has shifted over the years Stevens' painstakingly crafted songs have remained as ambitious ever, employing an ever-growing arsenal of human voices, classical instruments, and electronic textures to achieve epic, spiritual proportions. It's powerful stuff on record, but it takes on entirely new proportions at his wacky, wonderful live shows. Stevens is a creative visionary on multiple fronts, and his awe-inspiring concerts combine state-of-the-art stage design, outré costumes, extensive audience participation, and a talented backing band that often approaches double digits. Whether he's leading the band through soaring tunes like "Chicago" or returning to the stage with a banjo for a solo encore of the heartrending "Romulus", Stevens always takes ticket buyers on a wild, life-affirming ride.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Detroit-born Sufjan Stevens grew up playing a variety of instruments including piano, oboe, and English horn. After attending high school at Michigan's prestigious Interlochen Arts Academy he attended Hope College, where he learned the guitar and banjo. Post-college Stevens cut his teeth in the folk rock band Marzuki, which he left to release 2000's A Sun Came, his debut solo album that impressed critics with a far-flung range of influences that included Indian, Celtic, Middle Eastern, and American folk music.  His 2001 sophomore effort Enjoy Your Rabbit was also well-received, but it was 2003's Michigan, an expansive love letter to the state where he spent his formative years, that really landed him on the national stage. The record was a critical smash, topping year-end lists and drawing him out for extensive touring that introduced fans to his outsized live show.  He paid tribute to the stars and stripes once again in 2005 with Chicago, a sparkling concept album that peaked at No. 1 on Billboard's Heatseekers chart and was named the best album of the year by NPR, Amazon, and Pitchfork Media. Following a foray into electronica on 2010's The Age of Adz LP, Stevens returned to his folk and Americana roots for 2015's Carrie & Lowell. A renowned performer known for his infinitely creative live shows, Stevens continues to inspire and entertain every time he takes the stage on tour.

Too good for words!! Sufjan = love.

SOOOO AMAZING! I could not have asked for a better performance. I saw him last year at a small intimate show in Champaign and he blew me away. It was great to see him in a different atmosphere with a bigger band. I really hope he tours again soon! <3<3<3

    Sufjan -WOW!

by Watts0509 on 10/17/10The Chicago Theatre - Chicago

I was blown away by Sufjan's amazing performance. The visuals were such an amazing addition to his show as well as his story for the inspiration for his album.

    Not what I was expecting

by LLOC on 10/17/10The Chicago Theatre - Chicago

I understand an artist's need to try new things, but I don't think the artist should subject his loyal followers to a diet wholly comprised of the new efforts. The afterthoughts -- Chicago, John Wayne Gacy, etc. -- were the highlights of the concert for me.

    Beautiful and Intense...

by wildolive on 10/17/10The Chicago Theatre - Chicago

I was extremely excited going into this concert, but did read mixed reviews. But nothing I read beforehand did this concert justice. Sufjan's music is always delightful, but the whole show was so well thought out, and truly lovely. There were moments of both tenderness and intensity, and I loved every moment of it!

    Insane

by SevenSwans on 10/17/10The Chicago Theatre - Chicago

I've been waiting to see Sufjan for a long time. This has to be the best show I've ever seen. If you like the new album, you will like this.

    Sufjan Stevens was great!

by Opalmom on 10/17/10The Chicago Theatre - Chicago

This show was amazing! He mostly played songs from his new album, which takes a pretty different direction than his previous work, but I really liked it! The visuals were stunning and were well-integrated with the music, his voice was great, and the new songs themselves were beautiful. Even my boyfriend (not a big Sufjan Stevens fan) loved it!

Sufjan is a man with amazing talents

by RunnerGreg on 10/17/10The Chicago Theatre - Chicago

This was the first Sufjan concert I have been to. I started listening to his music earlier this year and really like his style. I wasn't to keen on his new stuff but the concert was the first time I have heard it but was amazed when he played the last 5 songs from his Illinoise CD. The Piano, Guitar and Banjo were amazing. He needs to get back to the Banjo.

    A spiritual experience

by CasimirPulaski on 10/17/10The Chicago Theatre - Chicago

Sufjan put on the most life-altering and magnificently beautiful show I've ever witnessed. The Chicago Theatre was sold out, and Sufjan completely blew the roof off. His setlist was mostly comprised of material from the Age of Adz, and was loud, psychedelic, and essentially incredible. A trippy mixed media show was presented behind the band on a giant screen, aptly visually aiding the music; there was also a screen that retracted every once in a while directly in front of Sufjan, which hosted several equally impressive and aesthetically stunning projections. When Sufjan closed with crowd-pleasers and standards from "Illinoise" (namely Chicago and Casimir Pulaski Day), I was deeply touched by the music's emotional fortitude. This show was the best of my entire life, despite the fact my seat was so far away.

    Sufjan is brilliant.

by Kpengell on 10/17/10The Chicago Theatre - Chicago

It seems like a lot of people are surprised that Sufjan opened with all the tracks from his new release, Age of Adz, but isn't that what most artists do? Release a record and then tour behind it? I was blown away at how perfect Sufjan's voice is in person (even w/the auto tune) and love the theatrics - backup vocalists/dancers, awesome images on the projection. This was my first time seeing Sufjan live and it was everything I hoped for!

    Crazy unbelievable!

by Nfnsprite on 10/17/10The Chicago Theatre - Chicago

I can't believe that Sufjan played for two-and-a-half hours because it felt like 15 minutes. I was so wrapped up that time just flew! I was sad when it was over. Sufjan is so creative and the only one of his kind. Nothing compares to his energy, artistry, and innovation.

    Wish he had more variety

by Suepal1 on 10/17/10The Chicago Theatre - Chicago

Sufjan is a great entertainer and his enthusiasm and love of music came across loud and clear. However, I wish he had played less of his new album - out just a few days - and more from his other albums. That being said, it was a great show and I'd see him again the next time he's in town. His genius is apparent in everything he does.

Don't buy or sell if you have!! This is Sufjan jr!

by Tony179 on 10/17/10The Chicago Theatre - Chicago

Horrible show, played 99% of his new stuff with little to no interest in playing any of his old music. He did encore with 4 of his older songs, but that was it. I sadly did not check out his latest album prior to buying tickets. He's trying to be Mike Snow! Problem... I was expecting singer/songwriter. And that stupid synth mic... Sufjan, stick with what you know!

so glad to see Sufjan progressing as a singer/song writer. It's great to be able to witness an artist in evolution. He's definitely listening to himself and is on the right track.

    Amazing Show!

by SuzanneJune on 10/17/10The Chicago Theatre - Chicago

Soof-iyan was amazing! His new album and attitude echo the stirrings of a male Bjork. The show was an artistic performance rather than just some person singing into a mic.

    Words are Futile Devices

    by maryg91 on 10/15/10Massey Hall - Toronto

One of the best concerts I've been to in a long time. Possibly ever. Sufjan is all about extravangance and perfection and gave each person so, so much more than their money's worth. Although the set list was composed almost entirely from his new album "Age of Adz" and his "All Delighted People"EP if you're a true fan you did your homework and listened to these before the show! I thought the sound was better than the recorded version and he is just so darn cute! He and his band were having a fabulous time and the visuals were incredible! I was dancing in my seat most of the concert and when I wasn't it was because he was melting my heart with a slower song. I've been waiting to see Sufjan for years and he absolutely exceeded my expectations in every regard. I'm going to make it a point to try my hardest to see him perform again. Beautiful. Incredible. "Words are futile devices" in explaining how amazing this concert was.

    Sufjan was AWESOME!

by astroboy on 10/9/09Music Hall of Williamsburg - Brooklyn

I was not having a good day because at work, and had to get up the next morning at 5AM to travel again for work. Aside to having to wait quite some time before the performances started, they were GREAT! I loved the opening band, and especially the lead singer's voice, so it was a nice surprise when she came back out on stage to sing with Sufjan. He had a nice mix of new stuff, old stuff... and he and his voice are just dreamy! Very very happy- and great venue!
