About

SUFJAN STEVENS IN CONCERT:

For the past 15 years, indie folk hero Sufjan Stevens has been an emblem of genre-busting creativity and perpetual sonic reinvention. As his palette has shifted over the years Stevens' painstakingly crafted songs have remained as ambitious ever, employing an ever-growing arsenal of human voices, classical instruments, and electronic textures to achieve epic, spiritual proportions. It's powerful stuff on record, but it takes on entirely new proportions at his wacky, wonderful live shows. Stevens is a creative visionary on multiple fronts, and his awe-inspiring concerts combine state-of-the-art stage design, outré costumes, extensive audience participation, and a talented backing band that often approaches double digits. Whether he's leading the band through soaring tunes like "Chicago" or returning to the stage with a banjo for a solo encore of the heartrending "Romulus", Stevens always takes ticket buyers on a wild, life-affirming ride.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Detroit-born Sufjan Stevens grew up playing a variety of instruments including piano, oboe, and English horn. After attending high school at Michigan's prestigious Interlochen Arts Academy he attended Hope College, where he learned the guitar and banjo. Post-college Stevens cut his teeth in the folk rock band Marzuki, which he left to release 2000's A Sun Came, his debut solo album that impressed critics with a far-flung range of influences that included Indian, Celtic, Middle Eastern, and American folk music.  His 2001 sophomore effort Enjoy Your Rabbit was also well-received, but it was 2003's Michigan, an expansive love letter to the state where he spent his formative years, that really landed him on the national stage. The record was a critical smash, topping year-end lists and drawing him out for extensive touring that introduced fans to his outsized live show.  He paid tribute to the stars and stripes once again in 2005 with Chicago, a sparkling concept album that peaked at No. 1 on Billboard's Heatseekers chart and was named the best album of the year by NPR, Amazon, and Pitchfork Media. Following a foray into electronica on 2010's The Age of Adz LP, Stevens returned to his folk and Americana roots for 2015's Carrie & Lowell. A renowned performer known for his infinitely creative live shows, Stevens continues to inspire and entertain every time he takes the stage on tour.

when an artist says they're working something out on stage, you rarely get the feeling that they're telling the truth, especially when it's something so seemingly elaborate. but knowing sufjan's love of first takes and just the simple fact that his tour morphed from somber performances of the entire album to this cross catalog revery, not to mention the unhinged way it evolved into full on dance party, it's hard not to feel like we may have truly seen the final culmination of years of grief processing. simply the best concert i've seen.

Kurt Vile Shoukd Have Been Headliner

by Anonymous on 8/10/16Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

We went to see Kurt Vile and left after Surjan's opening song. The line to purchase Kirt Vile t's, music was long; no one in Surjan's line so a lot of people came to see Kirt. Hollywood Bowl is "a must go" concert experience. Very chill, allow bottled wine and picnic askers/chillers, rent $1 cushy seats etc. great crowd, mood, views.

    Sufjan was Magical

    by folkman1 on 11/15/15Ryman Auditorium - Nashville

Hearing Sufjan Stevens, one of the most talented folk artists of my generation live at the Ryman Auditorium was multi-dimensional. First off, he played his new album, "Carrie & Lowell", in its entire form, with no pauses. This made me feel like I was seeing them one-on-one. Truly a magical feeling. Then he performed his hits from the past two decades stripped down with banjos, mandolins, and guitars. That is when Sufjan shines more than any other musician I know. Last, but not least, the entire band simply jammed for over fifteen minutes, non-stop, showing their versatility and craftmanship. All in all, Stevens delivered one of the best performances I have ever seen. Totally worth every penny.

Good. Opening act exceeded expectations. He released a themed album, so he played the entire thing and seemed to put his all into it.

    Sufjan Stevens is AMAZING!

    by ect0005 on 11/13/15Alabama Theatre - Birmingham

This was my first time ever seeing Sufjan Stevens perform, and the experience was unforgettable! Carrie & Lowell is a poignant album, and Sufjan's live performance of the songs is emotional and perfect! The light show, diversity of instruments, and incredible visuals add another level of depth to the beauty of Sufjan's words. The Alabama Theatre is also an incredible, intimate venue! The staff is so courteous and extremely helpful.

    MESMERIZING performance!!

by AnnieChs on 11/12/15North Charleston Performing Arts Center - North Charleston

I have been wanting to see Sufjan Stevens live for years now and he did not disappoint. Personally, Carrie & Lowell is my favorite album of Sufjan's--and that is saying a lot. I obviously expected an emotional and intimate experience but it was much more than that. He managed to balance quietly haunting, stripped-down tracks (i.e. "Death with Dignity") with more melodically complex, grandiose performances. The lights, harmonies, and backdrops perfectly complimented the setlist. The few spoken words he did share regarding life and death towards the end of the show were beautifully and honestly delivered. He closed with a few older favorites, including "Chicago," which I really appreciated. Sufjan is an absolutely brilliant artist and a beautiful human being (or angel...)...Overall I would say this was probably my favorite musical experience to date.

    Hard to find the words

by aguywhoridesbikes on 11/10/15Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre - Atlanta

My girlfriend asked me if I was looking forward to the Sufjan concert. Well, yes and no. I lost my mom to cancer in 2014 and I have listened to this album over and over, always thinking about Mom while listening. So I was looking forward to the live show, but uneasy about being emotional. I had my moments, starting with the first song. But listening to live music through tears, while remembering a loved one is a difficult, but precious experience. I hope nobody has to go through the kind of pain necessary to write an album like this ever again. But I'm thankful that Sufjan was able to put this all together. The show mixed in songs from previous albums as well, and he joked about how so many of the songs he was singing were quite sad. He kept the mood light and we all left with smiles on our faces. Big thanks to Sufjan and all who made this music and tour possible.

Great show! very professional from start to finish

by eikogo on 11/9/15Ovens Auditorium - Charlotte

Ovens is a beautiful space with great sound, and Sufjan and his band really used the space to the fullest. He made us hold our breath with quiet solo acoustic songs, and then blew us away with loud electronic jams and a wild light show. Very professionally done, jam packed with great songs. I know sufjan fans like to hear sufjan ramble and banter but he didn't talk as much and focused more on the music. Great show!

    Two words!

by Brutus63 on 11/8/15Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre - Atlanta

Sufjan made me want to "bear down" with my life! Didn't say a word during the main set, but was quiet casual during encore.

Good set. A few duds. Needs audience engagement.

by NolieCanoli on 11/7/15Ovens Auditorium - Charlotte

I'm a huge fan of Carrie and Lowell. Great songwriting. The live set had some good high moments and it sounded good. What made the show less stellar was a pin-drop-quiet auditorium with no engagement or breaking up the quiet here and there. It was too much for two hours. I've been to many acts in the past where they have been seated shows that sound better when the audience is quiet however there are usually moments here and there that 'break it up' a little bit so that it's not too tedious. Also, there were no 'awe' moments with respect to musicianship. It seems like a highly controlled set without skilled musicians showing us anything amazing. What was good was Sujfan is a terrific songwriter with good vocals also and it was great to hear him play so many songs that I really like. I give it a 3/5.

Did Illinois drop off the face of the earth?

by MannyWeeks on 11/4/15Meyerhoff Symphony Hall - Baltimore

The Sufjan Stevens who performed bore absolutely no resemblance to the regaled singer songwriter whose unique artistic abilities made Illinois one of the best albums of all time. He seems to have become so self indulgent that 15 minutes of new age jamming is now considered a crowning accomplishment. A major disappointment.

    Sufjan is perfection

by NikkiStevens on 11/4/15Meyerhoff Symphony Hall - Baltimore

I have been a fan of Sufjans for years! And finally got to see him live for the very first time, and to say the least, I was amazed. It was such an unforgettable experience. I was blown away the whole entire time. His show definitely had a bunch of emotion in it. I can't wait to see him live again! :)
