Styx and Yes rocked Red Rocks!!!

by Strick13 on 8/1/11Red Rocks Amphitheatre - Morrison

Yes opened the show with all those familiar hits I grew up with and some new stuff that definitely pleased. The only good thing to happen when Yes leftthe stage was Styx came on. The joint got jumpin' and I thoroughly enjoyed seeing Styx again. I saw them at Fiddler's Green in1991 and they rocked. This concert was just as good but I miss Dennis DeYoung. I won't say this Styx concert was better but it was differnet without Dennis on the keyboards. Chuck Panazzo's return was incredible. Styx and Yes came to Colorado to rock and they did...even with the thunderstorm an hour before showtime. I drove from Cheyenne, WY for the concert.

    Time to Retire!

by Voyager818 on 7/30/11Red Rocks Amphitheatre - Morrison

I have been a huge YES fan for many years. This show was a big disappointment. Silly me, I thought YES would be the headliner but see in retrospect why they were not. There comes a time when all rock stars need to hang it up and for this bunch I would say now's the time. The band just is not the same without Jon Andersons' beautiful voice. The music sounded like it was a beat behind on every song and just missed the mark on all counts. Styx was fine but I never loved their music and didn't come to see them. At least they could move around the stage, unlike the guys in YES who looked like they needed walkers to get around.

    total rock show

by oceanmaid on 7/30/11Red Rocks Amphitheatre - Morrison

This show was absolutely incredible. It was like all of my childhood memories in rock concert form, since I grew up listening to Styx and especially Yes. Seriously, Come Sail Away was a spiritual experience for me. This was the concert of a lifetime for me. I was amazed at how energetic both bands were, and they were of course, better than I ever imagined. Shane Alexander was good too, I liked his songs and he has a great voice.

    Great Sound

by CA1958 on 7/30/11Red Rocks Amphitheatre - Morrison

The Red Rocks Amphitheatre had amazing sound, and was a beautiful location. However, there were too many drunk people. Yes was very good. They aren't as good as they were 40 years ago, but it's not the originals. They played only 3 songs from the past--all else was newer numbers.

    Spectacular night with Yes

by Glamzilla on 7/30/11Red Rocks Amphitheatre - Morrison

Seeing Yes in concert was a life highlight! The sound was fantastic; voices and harmonies were spot on. Energy was stratospheric from the band to the audience. Styx put on a great show filled with enthusiasm and good vibes. Vocals were stellar. It was so fun to hear the awesome songs of the 80's.

    prog rock thrives

by rickmaur on 7/29/11Red Rocks Amphitheatre - Morrison

Yes, Styx and Shane Alexander gave a good show at Red Rocks under some very difficult stormy conditions. Yes, I've seen them better, but felt they were hampered somewhat with a shorter set than usual. It's hard for those guys to keep things short. Also, they seemed to have a little trouble with their sound system at the outset, but don't know if that was a byproduct of the weather. Keyboardist Geoff Downes is a good addition, and appears much more engaged than Oliver Wakeman. I remember Downes at a previous show with Asia, shaking hands with the fans and posing for photographs. He's quite a personable guy, but doesn't compare with Rick Wakeman. Higlights were Yours Is No Disgrace, new title song from Fly From Here, Heart of the Sunrise and Starship Trooper. Styx was surprisingly a good match. Don't know much about them, but they definitely rocked, had good theatrics and some good instrumental touches. Recalled a lot of their classic songs when they played them. Disappointments were certain idiot members of the audience, who just were outright rude and bothersome, especially during the Yes set. "Sit down and shut up. No one cares about your personal soap operas." I don't know, the Red Rocks crowd was definitely much better behaved and engaged when Peter Gabriel performed there in June. Of course, that was the show of a lifetime. Maybe, that's because Pete looks kind of like Anthony Hopkins or an axe murderer or someone you don't want to mess with. Maybe, the Yes band needs to take a few lessons from Gabriel in securing better audience behavior. Also very impressed with the turnout and all the folks in nutty Yes t-shirts. Don't know how much longer these guys will play, but it's always fun to see them even if they aren't at the top of their game. (And they aren't). Hopefully, Yes will come back with a much longer and adventuristic set.

    STYX is INCREDIBLE!!!!!!!!!!

by CarKEY on 7/29/11Red Rocks Amphitheatre - Morrison

Not a fan of YES, so we sat through their set unimpressed and only knew about four of the songs they played. Seemed strange that they were paired with Styx actually. But once Styx stepped on stage, it was all worth it. We've seen Styx for the last 5-6 years every time they have played in Denver and again were not disappointed. Their energy, stage presence, performance, and songs are so awesome. We were fans back in the 80's, but now even more so. Tommy Shaw is absolutely amazing and it seems the entire band is having such a great time entertaining and the audience certainly was into it. I would have a very hard time resisting buying continued concert tickets to see them over and over again in the future. If you like the music of Styx, you won't want to miss seeing them in person!!!!!

    STYX-Red Rocks-ALWAYS and awesome show!!!

by PamelaJo68 on 7/29/11Red Rocks Amphitheatre - Morrison

We were lucky, the heaviest rain hit around 6pm, so by the time the show started, it was just a very light drizzle. Shane Alexander was a decent opening act- nice voice. YES..... I was a little disappointed. I became a "fan" in the 80's...90125 and Big Generator, so I really didn't know most of what they played. I also noticed they had some rough segments where their timing was off. It was obvious though, that the people that were there to see YES were fans from the 70's.....I went for STYX, and they can add another awesome performance to their resume. I was so happy that they were the closing band, as their stage performance would have made them a hard act to follow!. They really are still at the top of their game, both physically and musically. You can tell they still love playing together after all these years. Yes, the line up has changed, and I will be the first to say that the current line up is by far the best! Todd Sucherman is a very accomplished drummer, and a great replacement for the late John Panozzo. Lawrence Gowan is a classically trained musician that has had a successful solo career in Canada since the 80's. He has taken a lot of heat as Dennis De Young's replacement, but I personally think he "blends in" better with the other songwriters in the band. He also has a commanding and energetic stage presence!! I didn't know much about Ricky Phillips when he joined a few years ago, but he seems to have blended in with the band just fine. I saw STYX for the first time in 1983 at McNichols Arena when I was 15. Almost 30 years later- I can honestly say I enjoy watching them play just as much now as I did then. In fact, probably more!! I hope they continue to tour for many years to come!!

Styx was awesome, outstanding!! They know how to rock and interacted with the crowd well. Very entertaining. Took our 10 year old son and he loved it. However, the cigarette and mariauna smoke made him nauseous. I wish that could be a bit more controlled in light of children who go to the shows. I did not particularily care for the lead singer of Yes. He did not seem to know what to do with himself when he was not singing. I thought there were more than a few places that his voice was a bit off. The lead guitar had some technical difficulties as well. Overall, the musicians could jam and played some great songs. The lead guitarist was great!!

    Styx

by msruru on 7/28/11Red Rocks Amphitheatre - Morrison

Styx were great. They played really well and they had a lot of heart and energy. I would absolutely see them again. Yes was just ok. They really didn't seem to want to be there and the music was a bit sloppy. This is coming from a huge Yes fan.

Styx was amazing; Yes should have stayed home!

by KarmaElectra on 7/28/11Red Rocks Amphitheatre - Morrison

Styx still has the enthusiasm, showmanship and skill to thrill. Tommy Shaw and the other members of Styx appeared to be having a great time during the performance, and pulled the crowd right in. Their talent made me forget the agony of sitting through the halfhearted Yes set. As a whole, Yes was slow, off key, and in many instances sounded as though they were not playing the same song at the same time. Toward the end their sound system was doing something obnoxious, yet it didn't sound much worse than their singing and playing had up to that point. In the end I applauded, only because they were finally done. If they ever attempt another tour, perhaps they could try daily iron supplements and a few months of practice beforehand.

    Rain Rain went away!

by CRDiane on 7/28/11Red Rocks Amphitheatre - Morrison

Major rain storm before the concert had us all a little nervous and although the concert started late, it was fabulous. Yes played first, a surprise but they were great. Styx though rocked the house! Had everyone on their feet many times through the night. Great night!!

    Yes, Meh...Styx Rocked!

by Penguinfilm on 7/28/11Red Rocks Amphitheatre - Morrison

I am a HUGE Yes fan, and was quite excited about seeing them again (I've seen them 5 times now), and this was my first time catching them at Red Rocks. For some reason, I thought they were the headliners - turns out they were co-headliners and it was their turn to go on first, with Styx closing out the show. So in my head, I had a vision before the concert of Styx going on first, and being so-so, and then Yes following them and completely rocking the place. Turns out it was completely the other way around! Yes started the show and just felt......flat. Like they were tired and a bit wore out. Most of the tempos of their most classic songs were played much slower, and there were several times where the vocals were a bit strained and the playing just.....okay. Very disappointed, as I love the group. Definitely my least favorite concert by them (and Jon Anderson was sorely missed). But then Styx came out and knocked it out of the park! Very energetic and extremely well polished show, with some wonderful playing. And Tommy Shaw still just rocks (and I swear, the dude doesn't age!). They hit all the big hits (for the most part) and put on a heck of a great show. The only thing missing was Dennis DeYoung (that would have been incredible), but the new lead singer did a pretty good job. Nice job Styx!

    Styx was awesome!!

by FireTiger on 7/28/11Red Rocks Amphitheatre - Morrison

Yes was forgettable at best. Any appeal they had was lost in the haze of cigarette and marijuana smoke that pervaded the area. They were mediocre at best. Most of their songs rambled on for 10 or more minutes and there were no lyrics that you would walk away singing. Steve Howe and Chris Squire were excellent, but the new leader singer, Benoit David was consistently flat making the harmonies painful to listen to. Styx on the other hand was phenomenal!! They are definitely one of the best live bands out there on tour. They had incredible energy and performed a wonderful show as always. It was great to see Chuck Panazzo during the show. The only bad part of their part of the evening was that it had to end much too soon. They could easily carry a concert all by themselves without extra bands. It's a shame that they have been left out of the Rock 'n Roll Hame of Fame.
