St. John's Red Storm Men's Basketball History

St. John's University played its first men’s basketball game in 1907. In 1910-11, St. John's went 11-0 and were retroactively awarded a national championship by the Helms Athletic Foundation. The Red Storm are five-time champions of the National Invitation Tournament (1943, 1944, 1959, 1965 and 1989) and have also had success in the NCAA tournament, reaching the Final Four in 1952 and 1985 and losing the 1952 final to Kansas.

Lou Carnesecca famously coached St. John's from 1965 to 1992, except for three seasons when he coached the New York Nets of the ABA, and never had a losing season with the team. Since 1979, St. John's basketball has been synonymous with Big East basketball, winning five conference regular-season championships and three Big East tournaments in that span. Behind the play of Chris Mullin, St. John's became one of three Big East teams, along with Villanova and Georgetown, to play in the 1985 Final Four. In 2019, St. John's reached their first NCAA Tournament since 2015.

    Waiting in the cold

by Joe on 12/6/21UBS Arena - Belmont Park - Long Island

On a cold winters night we were kept waiting outside while the security and ticket scanners were clearly at their posts awaiting the okay to open the doors. No one was there to give the order. Waiting since 5 o’clock we were told no one would be allowed in until 6 for no apparent reason. 6 came and went and the crowd became boisterous. 6:15 came and went. Finally at 6:20 we were allowed in and the staff apologized profusely but they couldn’t open without orders. Nice way to treat first time patrons. 🧐

    Crazy Prices

by Exciter on 12/6/21UBS Arena - Belmont Park - Long Island

Game was OK, parking and pricing at UBS Arena is off the charts. $35 for parking nowhere near the arena, and $14 for a soda. Really? Come on!!!

    Frustrating

by Joe C on 12/6/21UBS Arena - Belmont Park - Long Island

Doors did not open until 40 minutes before tipoff. No announcement as to when they might open as thousands massed in front of the entrance. No apologies from staff. Get it together!

    OPEN THE GATES!

by OBPEEN on 12/6/21UBS Arena - Belmont Park - Long Island

Online said gates open at 6pm, 6pm came and went gates still weren't open. It wasn't till about 6:20 that the doors FINALLY opened. Lucky it was a seasonable warm night but myself and friends were still freezing before we got inside.

    First game

by Chipper on 12/6/21UBS Arena - Belmont Park - Long Island

It is a mess. Since I had heard parking was crazy, I parked on local streets and walked 8 minutes. Had friends who were scanned in at the door, then had to be rescanned to sit in seats, missed 8 minutes of game. I tried to get to my courtside seats, went up to go down, no signage, staff didn’t know, I repeat “ a mess”.

    UBS Experience

by mrjcs on 12/6/21UBS Arena - Belmont Park - Long Island

The event was fine. The arena is beautiful. The bathrooms and food vendors are much improved over the Nassau Coliseum. The parking was horrendous. We were charged $ 45 by Tickemaster to park in the Emerald Lot when the cost was $ 30 at the gate. The Emerald Lot might as well be in Emerald City along with the Wizard. The shuttles were terrible returning after the game. We've been promised a refund of $ 15. Haven't seen it yet. We were kept outside the arena along with thousands of fans until almost 6:30 PM. No reason given. It'll be a long time before I go back to UBS.

by Catman on 12/6/21UBS Arena - Belmont Park - Long Island

    Not impressed

by RJD on 12/6/21UBS Arena - Belmont Park - Long Island

UBS arena leaves a lot to be desired. Didn’t open doors until 6:15 for a 7pm game. Poor food choices. Odd and confusing signage. Not many seats behind the baskets which wasn’t a good look. parking wasn’t organized and attendants were clueless.

Arena is a horrendous design for basketball.

by JB on 12/6/21UBS Arena - Belmont Park - Long Island

I sat in front row, and couldn’t see the game. Paid $45 to park, and found on arrival it should have been $25. Everything was overpriced, especially Ticketmaster’s outrageous handling charges.

    Game experience

by Matt on 12/6/21UBS Arena - Belmont Park - Long Island

Bought parking ticket online. I was given only one choice, Emerald lot for $45. When I arrived, the price posted was $30. This is totally unacceptable. Don't say $5 more at the gate. Also, website did not offer handicap seating. I was told that it was available.

    Could Have Been Better

by SJU60 on 12/6/21UBS Arena - Belmont Park - Long Island

Went to the new UBS Arena to see St. John's basketball. The doors were to open only an hour before the game. Not much time to get 12,000 people in to arena. The doors did not open until almost 6:20 and took a good 15 minutes to get in. Once in, half of the concessions were not even open. Had to walk half way around concourse to get food for family. Doing this made me miss beginning of game. Prices were unbelievably high!! Parking was $45 which was crazy. Traffic getting out was horrendous. Overall, the experience was not all it could have been!

    Practice Makes Perfect

by Redmen on 12/6/21UBS Arena - Belmont Park - Long Island

No problems with TicketMaster but the UBS Arena should've known they weren't ready to open to the public yet. Starting with 2 different prices for parking, which they then said would be reimbursed to waiting for the Gates to open at 6:20pm for a 7pm tip. No workers outside or inside knew anything about the Arena's layout. Not designed for basketball obviously and it showed, too much open space behind the baskets. The shuttle system back to the parking lot was flawed and felt like the Wild West or a takeover in any movie. Hopefully everything gets fixed soon!

    2 Points

by Joe on 12/10/19Madison Square Garden - New York

Game was very interesting as St John’s and WVU tied the game and with five seconds left St John’s was up by 2 points. WVU called a time out to set up a play as player was supposed to drive to the basket to tie the game and hopefully get fouled for a chance at the foul line. Instead he took a 3,foot jump shot and missed and St John’s won. Good Game...
