St. John's Red Storm Men's Basketball History

St. John's University played its first men’s basketball game in 1907. In 1910-11, St. John's went 11-0 and were retroactively awarded a national championship by the Helms Athletic Foundation. The Red Storm are five-time champions of the National Invitation Tournament (1943, 1944, 1959, 1965 and 1989) and have also had success in the NCAA tournament, reaching the Final Four in 1952 and 1985 and losing the 1952 final to Kansas.

Lou Carnesecca famously coached St. John's from 1965 to 1992, except for three seasons when he coached the New York Nets of the ABA, and never had a losing season with the team. Since 1979, St. John's basketball has been synonymous with Big East basketball, winning five conference regular-season championships and three Big East tournaments in that span. Behind the play of Chris Mullin, St. John's became one of three Big East teams, along with Villanova and Georgetown, to play in the 1985 Final Four. In 2019, St. John's reached their first NCAA Tournament since 2015.

    Lousy Seats!

by Nick1262 on 1/17/12Madison Square Garden - New York

I went to the St. John's website to purchase my tickets because I'm a fan of St. John's. The website directed me to Ticketmaster where I purchased my seats. When I got to the game I found out I was seated on the Georgetown side and had to listen to "The Hoya's" all around me, through the whole game. As an out of towner, this was was my first visit to Madison Square Garden and was very disappointed with my seats!

I am not necessarily a fan of either St. John's or Pitt, but am a huge Big East fan. The game was amazing. Great, great defense by both teams. A trademark of the Big East and what I love about college basketball. Pitt iced a 3 point shot with 11 seconds to go to take the lead. St, John's came back and scored an unbelievable basket with 1.2 seconds left to win. WOW

    Down to the end!

by NYCathy on 2/24/11Madison Square Garden - New York

It was a close game all through! I'm not a huge college basketball fan, I do like Big East, though! 1. It was basketball at The Garden! 2. It was Queens, NY vs. Pittsburgh, PA (I'm from Queens, my boyfriend is from Pittsburgh!) 3. 2 great college teams; why, not?

    Johnnies Win!!!

by mrmallard on 2/22/11Madison Square Garden - New York

One of the best basketball games we've seen all year. Terrific defense (when can you say that about an NBA game??), comebacks by both sides, and a dramatic finish. It's why the Big East IS the best conference in the country!!

I bought tickets for my husband and son to spend quality time and enjoy a good game. It was fantastic and they had a tremendous time. The seats were on point and the game itself was electric and action packed.

Let's go Pitt... We will be back..

by Debdilo on 2/22/11Madison Square Garden - New York

We are from Pittsburgh and we love the Panthers. It was a great game, unfortunately Pitt struggled the first half. The ending was great even though it wasnt in our favor. Amazing what can happen in a second. We'll be back..

by NJstixx on 2/21/11Madison Square Garden - New York

An incredible last second basket gives St. Johns the win against #4 Pittsburgh. The Garden erupted! The win was the Johnnies 4th against a top 5 team at the Garden this year and propels them into the Top 25 and insures an NCAA Tournament Birth!

    Cowabunga!

by JohnnieFan on 2/21/11Madison Square Garden - New York

MSG is an amazing venue under normal circumstances, but they really rolled out the red carpet (pun intended) for St. John's fans. The seats were supreme and the ticket prices sooooo fair. The atmosphere contributed to the excitement and total enjoyment qualtiy of the game. Lights, big screen, clear crisp sound from the announcers, interesting time-out activities, and yummy snacks all added up to the best sporting event I've ever attended!!! Thanks to Pitt, the Johnnies, and MSG for the thrill of a lifetime.

    Red Storm Dominate

by RetiringType1 on 2/12/11Madison Square Garden - New York

The first half of the game was close and see-sawed back and forth. Just before halftime, Malik Boothe sunk a desperation 3-pointer that turned the game around. Jim Calhoun, UCONN's coach argued the play and received a technical foul. Hardy made both shots on his way to a career high 33 points. St. John's did not look back the rest of the way, going up by 24 points a few times.
