    Middle-age Rockin' Fun

by SLMB on 12/31/10Birchmere - Alexandria

Tight sound, well-rehearsed. Johnny still sounds like he did last time I saw him, 30 years ago. Horn section was great. Played a long set, although I missed some of my favorites.

Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes

    by OllieT123 on 11/29/10Keswick Theatre - Glenside

Interesting set list. The opener, Leon Russell, was in fine form with a crack band. Southside, unfortunately, suffered due to poor sound -- the volume was cranked way too high particularly on the drums and his vocals, which gave the impression that he was shouting, not singing. This was so bad that people were leaving the show in the middle and the folks on the sound board didn't seem to notice or care.

    Southside Johnny and Leon Russell

by LOHAD on 11/29/10Keswick Theatre - Glenside

This show unfortunately turned out to be an odd and less than satisfying event. For the record, I've been a fan of Southside and the Jukes for over 35 years, have an almost complete collection of their albums and CDs, and make a point of seeing the band perform live at least once annually. My wife and I have even made vacation plans to coincide with a Jukes concert. That said, this show somehow didn't click. It's hard to figure out exactly why. It certainly wasn't for lack of enthusiasm from Southside. He was his usual high energy, sarcastic self. The same can be said for the Jukes although I have to say that "the Asbury Jukes" seem to change personnel more frequently than I change my socks (at least daily). The head roadie--sorry I don't know his name--has been with Southside longer than anyone in the band. The guitar players were OK but I missed seeing Bobby Bandiera. The brass section was solid as expected. The Jukes were, overall, a more than competent backup band. But somehow, the "chemistry" between Southside and the band seemed rehearsed rather than authentic. Perhaps the audience and the venue were part of the problem. I doubt that there was anyone under 40 at the show, and while the audience was appreciative the applause after each song was on a level typically found at a performance by a classical string quartet. Jeez people, this is a rock 'n roll show! Somewhat cramped seating and the lack of any place to stand or dance also didn't help. Leon Russell and his band were great musically (terrific lead guitarist!) although it might have been nice if Leon said something--anything at all-- to the crowd, There was absolutely no interaction whatsoever with the audience. If Leon ever performs with Bob Dylan, it will undoubtedly be a long and emotionally cold experience for those in attendance. Finally, perhaps I was disappointed by the fact that Leon and Southside did not perform together. Both have unique, interesting voices and it would have been great for them to join together for a song or two (I can imagine them trading verses on a traditional blues number). Unfortunately it was not to be.

    Timeless Excellence!!

by TrappedForGood on 11/22/10B.B. King Blues Club and Grill - New York

I'm in love all over again, even after not having the opportunity to see Southside Johnny and The Asbury Jukes for over 25 years! (This was my 14th show) Finally....I was there, hearing Johnny's voice that just shoots straight to my soul! My favorite singer of all time...he has been so under-rated! Great to see some of the original musicians and they are as tight as ever! Southside has an amazing talent and I don't think I'll ever get enough! I just wish the night didn't end! Southside Johnny...You're the BEST!

    Southside always delivers!!

by rps4d on 11/22/10B.B. King Blues Club and Grill - New York

Just another sensational show by the Jukes! it is only fitting that "Havin' a Party" is their signature song. Sometimes its hard to tell who's having more fun--the crowd or the band. Screw the arenas, I'll take these guys in a small venue every night of the week! Lots of vamping and crowd interaction. The show is loose but the musicianship is as tight as can be. True professionals who know how to throw a party.

Southside Johnny & Asbury Jukes take N.F. by Storm

by BBuffalo on 11/8/10Bears Den At Seneca Niagara Casino & Hotel - Niagara Falls

Perfect venue to see the World's Greatest Bar Band. 443 Seat Bear's Den is accoustically perfect, seats superb. No seat is more than 40 feet from the stage. I have seen SSJ & the Jukes at least 50 times, and this is as good as I have ever seen em. Every member of the Asbury Jukes is a superb musician & at the top of their game, with arguably the best horn section that has ever played R&B & Rock and Roll. Just ask Bruce Springsteen, Diana Ross, Gary U.S. Bonds, Robert Cray, the Allman Bros and any other major act they have played with over the last several years. Special Kudos to keyboardist supreme Jeff Kazee who co-produced and co-wrote the material on the very fine new SSJ/Jukes CD Pills and Ammo. Listen to Strange, Strange feeling and you will have the nagging feeling that this band needs to be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!

    High Energy, Tight and Loose

by JerrytheGman on 11/8/10Bears Den At Seneca Niagara Casino & Hotel - Niagara Falls

This was a great show. Southside Johnny was energetic, playful and in great voice, and the Jukes' musicianship was awesome. The show was both loose (band members throwing shoes and hats around the stage, changing the set list on the fly, accidentally knocking over mic stands) and tight (the band can turn on a dime and each member ready to solo on a moment's notice). This has been one of my favorite bands since their first album, and I'd go again and pay twice as much in a heartbeat.

Southside Johnny is an awesome performer!

by Anonymous on 11/7/10Bears Den At Seneca Niagara Casino & Hotel - Niagara Falls

You know it's a great concert when by the end of the show everyone in the place is dancing and singing and rocking along with the band - even some attendees who had never seen him in concert before. He definitely entertains the crowd and makes every show unique and personal to the location. As great as I think he is, and can't believe that he's not more well known, I'm glad that he's not, because it allows us to see him in a smaller venue and enjoy it so much more than the concerts held at the larger venues. Awesome show - as awesome as the first time I saw him at Darien Lake about 30 years ago when they played in the equivalent of a small band shell with 500 people or less on the lawn seats, which was all they had!

    The Jukes rock the house!

by LuciaV59 on 11/7/10Bears Den At Seneca Niagara Casino & Hotel - Niagara Falls

The show was incredible and the venue is one of the best to see a concert, not a bad seat in the house. Southside Johnny never disappoints and he knows how to connect with his audience! He never stops moving, dancing and singing. And he interacts so well with his band. If you like horns this is the group to see!

    Southside Johnny - Delivered!!

by Anonymous on 10/6/10B.B. King Blues Club and Grill - New York

We planned our vacation in New York to coincide with a John Hiatt gig ... so, looking around for other shows we picked SJ @ BBKings. We had no expectations whatsoever, either of the venue (which I'd previously visited in Memphis and Orlando) or the artiste, whilst we knew his name, we weren't overly familiar with his material. Well what a night, and what a start to our great time in NYC. We opted to dine, and were lucky to get a table, arriving about 7pm, but ended up with a great view of the stage from the left side - good job we hadn't arrived earlier or booked one of the floor level centre tables as there was a huge amount of people standing front and centre stage - probably a good 60 - 80 people! Anyway, dead on 8 o clock, on strides John and the band and kicked off into Keith Richards' Happy ........ we then had over 2 hours of tremendous Rock 'n Roll - a 9 piece band (2 guitars, keys, bass, drums and a 4 piece horn section) backing SJ brilliantly. High energy, great solos (including SJ on harp), great audience rapport ................. on the whole an absolutely BRILLIANT night!!

by Germany2NYC on 9/30/10B.B. King Blues Club and Grill - New York

Travelled specially from Germany to New York for this one at BB Kings - what a concert !! Great venue, atmosphere, and location near Times Square. A great night, could only have been bettered had Bobby Bandiera been on guitar. Looking forward to Holmfirth UK show next month, hoping Forever and Good is Gone (two Steve Van Zandt classics) on the playlist.
