  • Superb Performance

by abigtennisfan on 1/27/16FAU - Carole & Barry Kaye Performing Arts Auditorium - Boca RatonRating: 5 out of 5

I never would have known that the chorale and the orchestra were 'new' together. The performances of both were outstanding. It was intriguing watching the conductor perform her magic. A wonderful and uplifting experience.

  • Emotional work by a genius

by Pablocito on 1/27/16FAU - Carole & Barry Kaye Performing Arts Auditorium - Boca RatonRating: 4 out of 5

I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this beautiful symphony. I felt the orchestra began the fourth movement erratically, with various brass instruments getting a late start. The choir was superb. The 4 soloists should be given floor microphones. Their lyrics seemed to be slurred due to the fact that it was quite hard to project their voices to such a large hall. The conductor was mesmerizing. She used her whole body, swaying, bending, slashing, etc. to bring out the absolute best in the orchestra. She was a fantastic leader and controlled her charges quite well.

  • Incredible performance

I hadn't been to a symphony in 25 years. When I saw that South Florida Symphony orchestra was playing Beethoven's 9th, I couldn't pass up that opportunity. The Mozart was a nice warm-up, but the 9th was, in a word, memorable. The orchestra played it beautifully, and the 4th movement with Chorale was simply the icing on the cake. I had a smile on my face during the entire 4th. The soloists were outstanding, and chills went up and down my spine as the movement built to it's final crescendo. The performance did not disappoint in any respect.

  • Great chorus and soloists

Beethoven's Ninth is always a crowd pleaser and the chorus and soloists did not disappoint. The Mozart was a bit lackluster and orchestra was good but not great. Additionally, the audience response was more muted than I am used to in the City which may have dampened the enthusiasm of some of the instrumentalists who were on their third out of four consecutive daily concerts at different venues from Key West to Palm Beach.

  • Just fabulous

by TomFTL on 1/26/16Parker Playhouse - Ft LauderdaleRating: 5 out of 5

Although I had heard Beethoven's 9th on recordings, I had never seen a live performance before. This performance was just fabulous. Sebrina Alfonso is truly a master at bring the musicians together, and both the chorale and the soloists sang beautifully. It was very impressive.

  • Very good but not without some blemishes

by Davidsbundler on 1/26/16Parker Playhouse - Ft LauderdaleRating: 4 out of 5

Overall, the performance of Beethoven's 9th was very good but far from perfect. First the good: the strings, brass and woodwinds played in tune, the last movement was a powerful combination of orchestra and chorus, and the tempos were good. Now the bad: occasionally the strings were out of synch, the French horn parts were played poorly, the solo soprano vocalist stood out too much, and the pianissimos were too loud. Additionally, Parker Playhouse is a dead venue lacking any reverb that would have given the overall sound more ambiance and warmth. Overall, very good performance, but far from perfect.

SFSO outdid themselves last night at Kaye Auditorium. One felt like they were on Broadway. First rate orchestra and one of the best conductors I have seen. Maestra Alfonso brings the music alive!
