Well, Sharon Jones was UNBELIEVABLE - this is a woman who knows how to perform. In all honesty, I only caught the last three acts (including SoulLive) and didn't stay past Scofield's two guest numbers (disappointed - hope he didn't come back at the end - shame on Alan for not telling us if he was coming back later).
SoulLive was off to a very, very rough start, and seemed to find their groove, but I found much of their stuff self-indulgent and just, well....boring. Not having a bass player is a huge hole in their line-up, and I can't see why the keyboard player (ten years together? playing at Monterey Jazz next week) spent much of his time keeping his clavinet straight? come on guys...way too distracting.
I'm sure they've had better nights, and perhaps I left too soon...but I see potential, just not enough discipline perhaps...plus Alan, please, LESS TALKING DUDE - or just make your stories shorter. PLEASE.
Let me be fair, good musicianship throughout the night - GREAT VIBE in the audience - AMAZING setting (why can't every show I see outdoors be at the Pines Theatre in Florence Mass????).
