    7-2-2009 SY concert in Philly

by Davito on 7/6/09The Electric Factory - Philadelphia

The show was good, but since they were promoting The Eternal they pretty much stuck to that albulm. They opened with Catholic Block, ended with Death Valley 69 but everything in between was new. First encore was Cross the Breeze and the Sprawl from DDN, 2nd encore was another new song and Silver Rocket. I love SY but I wish they'd vary the setlist with more older songs. The Eternal is a decent albulm and I know they've got 25+ years worth of material- but a little more variety would be great.

    Sonic Youth Somber Descent

by protestph on 7/5/09United Palace Theatre - New York

Admittedly the songs played weren't recognizable to me, but I haven't been a huge fan of the past 2 albums that came out. Its too stadium rock to a "t", excellent musical ability but very mechanical. The venue itself lent to the stiffness of the evening, though I imagined sonic youth would take advantage of the arabesque, grotesque, rococo curlicue, feast for the eyes the theotre was and play some nice ambient minimalist favs. I was disappointed. All just high energy (though not high spirited) standard rock ballads.

Sonic Youth the Church of today!

by Replacements75 on 7/5/09United Palace Theatre - New York

Sonic Youth put on an amazing set at this old theater that is most often used as a church. The sound was awesome and their choice of old and new songs was completely inspired.

Sonic Youth at United Palace NY

by PoopooLarson on 7/5/09United Palace Theatre - New York

Good show. A little short though. It was a little less than an hour before first encore. Show started at 8:06 .With warm up band we were out a little after 10:30. The band was good though and still into it, not just going through the motions. Two highlights for me were "Catholic Block" and an explosive version of "Pacific Coast Highway." They did the guitar solo on PCH differently. Instead of starting off gentle yet distorted and then getting increasingly louder and more penetrating they slammed it out like a sledgehammer hitting the guitar for each note. I was watching Thurston for this one instead of Lee. He reminded me of Pete Townsend when he was slam strumming his guitar, but without the windmill. The audience, that is 99% of it did not sit for the whole show. And most weren't dancing either. Just standing there. I don't mind standing for a bit, but after a while I wanted to sit and enjoy the show and then stand if they did something extraordinary. I guess it is a testament to how devoted the fans are, but as I get older, I feel if I pay for a seat, then I want to spend some time sitting in it. The sound was a touch too loud and distorted. Loud and clear I am okay with. It wasn't horrible, but just off enough for me to notice it and compare it to recent shows I have been too. To wrap it up: Band good. Sound could be better. Length of show too short.

Very Very Loud. Very Very Good. SY Rules! Kim Gordon's miniskirt to Thurston Moore's assault on the guitar leaves the faithful feeling great. cheers.

I've decided that at certain moments Sonic Youth reminds me of a beautiful, amazing swarm of bees dancing. I mean that in the most awe inspiring way. Really.

    Sonic youth at united palace

by Mcap on 7/4/09United Palace Theatre - New York

It was great seeing this amazing band in a soft-seat theater.... The sound was great, and they looked like they were having lots of fun. They played almost all of their new album, and then mixed in some old classics.... Kim was super sexy as usual!

    Amazingly energetic

by Matthew on 7/4/09United Palace Theatre - New York

This was a great show in a great venue. I was seated third row center of the lower loges and could see the stage excellently. Sonic Youth didn't miss a beat and while I would have liked them to play more of their older songs in addition to stuff from the new album, the new album is damn good so it's OK. Thurston amazes me with how energetic a performer he is, and the rest of the band weren't statues either. All in all it was a great night though the band only played for about an hour and a half.

wall of sound, wall of FURY

by oldsoul on 7/4/09United Palace Theatre - New York

even though they played must of their new stuff, which i didnt know, it's simply amazing. some change overs and transitions are nothing short of works of art, beautiful set pieces. and the sounds, the f'ing SOUND! also the light action and art installations on the back made the experience even greater. one of the best shows i've seen in my four years in new york. even though i missed the first ten minutes, i left with a smile in my face...and my heart pounding (and my neck stiff from all the head-bobbing!)

by rakum on 7/4/09United Palace Theatre - New York

It is the second time i see sonic youth and it's always worth to travel long just to see them because they are monsters, savages, genious. Sometimes i am afraid of getting deaf 'cause of those beautifully noisy guitars! i really love their music, it makes my body and soul floating and travel to different levels of ecstasy and crazyness. i can tell that mi am so lucky now that i have seen sonic youth ! i can't wait to see them again!

    Sonic Youth was incredible!

by Zach on 7/4/09United Palace Theatre - New York

Sonic Youth played at a fantastic venue: The United Palace Theater. It is a large theater that resembles The Beacon Theater but with more culture embedded. Sonic Youth still knew how to play punk. The age of them had little to no effect on how good and crazy they were. Their crazy strobe lights combined with the stage antics put on an amazing show. As a musician, I can say there clearly no loose ends up there; musically they were very tight. Overall fantastic show!

A great performance at a mediocre venue.

by dmt9000 on 7/4/09United Palace Theatre - New York

I've seen Sonic Youth perform at many different venues and they almost always put on a great show. I even enjoy some of their noise shows, with the notable exception of their insulting, torturous, masturbatory jaunt at the aptly-named No Fun Fest a few weeks ago. Last night's show, by contrast, at the decrepit United Palace Theater was a great mix of strong new material and pre-Geffen classics, and would have warranted an extra star or two were it not for the fact that the venue is simply not audio friendly. I've seen Beck and Modest Mouse at this venue also, and there is just no getting around the fact that the sound is poor at this venue. Muffled, yet too loud, and not well mixed. That said, it was still a great performance, and Sonic Youth have composed some terrific new songs on The Eternal.

    Great Jam Session

by Vera on 7/4/09United Palace Theatre - New York

This was a great event the venue was amazing the acoustics in the united theatre were awesome. The band came out for 3 encores and it was a standing room only. still wish the show went longer. I meet Kim and thursten after the show and received autographs. To bad about the tour bus door that the bus driver jammed other then that it would have been a perfect evening

Sonic Youth in a Huge Space

by 3382009 on 7/4/09United Palace Theatre - New York

Sonic Youth tore it up. They closed real strong and the entire show was full force. My only complaint is that the acoustics in the theater were a little too spacious. Sound got muddied. But he sound engineering improved as the show progressed.
