So You Think You Can Dance Live! on Tour

As the name implies, the ‘So You Think You Can Dance' Live! tour is an extension of the long-running Fox TV series. Each year, top contestants from the show's most recent season go on the road and perform in front of live audiences. At these gigs, ‘SYTYCD' fans can expect the usual mix of inventive, high-quality choreography and solo and group spotlights. The format of the tour allows dancers to stretch out physically and emotionally, and to show off their unique personalities, which makes the night a resonant one. For the 2018 tour, the Top 10 finalists from Season 15 — including winner Hannahlei Cabanilla, a contemporary dance enthusiast from Orange County, California, and season runner-up Jensen Arnold — are hitting the road to show off their best moves, under the choreographic guidance of the Emmy-winning Mandy Moore.

About So You Think You Can Dance Live! Tour

Just as ‘American Idol' and ‘The Voice' have helped aspiring musicians launch a career, the judged competition ‘So You Think You Can Dance' has done the same for dancers. Contestants from the show, which premiered in 2005, have gone on to become professional actors and actresses, choreographers, and backup dancers for pop stars. ‘SYTYCD' itself has also become known for its innovative dance routines to popular music, and is a perennial Primetime Emmy winner, particularly in the Outstanding Choreography category.

The show's sterling track record is a testament to the stunning pool of talent on display during each season. ‘SYTYCD' doubles as a spotlight showcase for promising dancers specializing in various styles (hip-hop, jazz, contemporary), who then show off their best moves via group, pair, and individual dance performances. Each week, judges whittle down the field of competitors, before crowning one person the winner. After the season ends, the ‘So You Think You Can Dance' Live! tour gives top contestants a chance to strut their stuff in real life, up close and personal in front of the show's many, many fans.

    Fun Birthday Celebration

by dj on 12/5/19Balboa Theatre - San Diego

Fabulous seats in the middle of second row. Loved the performance and vibe of the entire theatre. Amazing experience! Felt rushed out of the theatre by staff cleaning up and then by staff locking up.

    It had great moments

by Dance lover on 12/5/19Balboa Theatre - San Diego

I rarely post reviews, but feel compelled. I have gone to every SYTYCD tour show since it started. The first few were amazing. But the tour has progressively gone downhill, in my opinion. It is such a bare bones event now. No props, no special lighting, no video, no introduction of the dancers. They seem to carry no understudies, so this time only 9 dancers. They all do at least 15 or more routines, so they are all over worked and over half of them were K-taped and knee braced up. The hostess from season 7 is 20lbs overweight. It is distracting. Additionally there were a handful of the cast that have put on significant weight since the show aired. How odd if one is looking for a career in professional dance and all the work it takes to get to the point of being in this tour. But Baily and a handful of the cast really carried the show and have a bright future in professional dance! Only other comment is I do not recommend sitting in the first 5 rows. For two years now these are very high priced tickets, but there are lighting obstructions all across the front of the stage and you can only see the dancers from the knees up. These are BAD seats, don't get them or you will be disappointed. Happened to me two years in a row. I don't think I will go next year. Much better choices in high level dance shows out there now.

    Almost Great

    by M. B. on 12/5/19Balboa Theatre - San Diego

I love the television show but may not go back for another live show. When did it get so cheesy? The first half of the performance was pretty bad with the exception of those dances that had been in the actual television production. The new "added" performances had an amateur talent show feel. You could tell they were choreographed by someone completely different and all the dancers looked uncomfortable. The costumes didn't help (sweatshirts and ill fitting Hawaiian shorts? One male dancer appeared to be wearing toddler pajamas). The MCs were cute but unnecessary - please stop with the audience involvement (yelling and screaming)....it's so demeaning. We're here because we love to watch dance -we aren't at sporting event. The lighting was also a problem - flash blinding all those on the floor throughout the performance. The second half went better with more original performances and less tchotch. Overall we left still loving our top ten (although upset Gino was missing) but felt like we just witnessed people who were forced to perform things they didn't feel. We hope SYTYCD goes back to the beautiful, rich, organic form of dance and steers away from the dog and pony.

    Good but not great

by LiveTheatreLover on 12/5/19Balboa Theatre - San Diego

I love the show and season 16 had an amazing top 10 but an even better top 4. NOTE: All FOUR should have received a monetary prize: $250,000/125,000/75,000/50,000. [or something like that; they worked too hard] Anyway so disappointed Gino was injured. I really missed seeing him and it made a difference for sure. The show didn't have the caliber/energy/precision of dance as the show did. The lights were blinding in the audience and took away from the experience. Too much hip hop. Lauren & Cyrus were a bit too corny for me. Liked the pieces from the show. I saw the tour one other year at what is now Pechanga's. This by far is certainly a better venue but the delivery wasn't as good. I was teetering between a 3 and a 4 but gave the 4 since I know how hard dancers work and many of them, especially Mariah had quick changes. Wish Gino a speedy recovery and hope the rest of the tour goes well.

    AWFUL!! Not Dancers Fault!

by LadyBug on 12/5/19Balboa Theatre - San Diego

Will never go again. Have been going every year and we absolutely LOOOOVE the dancing and the dancers. The dancers were amazing. The music is always too loud but this time it was past ridiculous-actually hurt the ears. And shooting spot lights into audience eyes all nite. Don't know what they are thinking. I've read complaints of same all across US for years. Nobody is listening. We want to watch the dancing and not miss the beautiful moves by being blinded. They already went from a large theater to a much smaller theater.... I guess they will be less even more paid seats next year. Just sad for the dancers... they are always fabulous.

Meet and greet with SYTYCD dancers

by c.day on 12/5/19Balboa Theatre - San Diego

First, this was one PRICEY event. It was well over $1200 for three tickets. Our family watches every season, it's our weekly treat. We love the dancers and each have our favorites. We were at the event two hours early with a few dozen other fans. We were shuffled into a room upstairs in the theater for a photo op with seven of the ten dancers. It was less than five minutes. So that was disappointing. In addition to being star-struck, we felt rushed through the line. I would have liked a chance to shake all the dancers' hands and share a quick hello with them. That said, the dancers were incredibly gracious. Two of them hugged us, and they all danced and laughed throughout the photos. The fact that they were so kind and fun made up for the fact that it was far too short. And the event itself, the actual dances, was beyond amazing. They are all so talented and they seemed genuinely happy to be on stage doing their thing.

by Anneke Skywalker on 12/5/19Balboa Theatre - San Diego

Love SYTYCD tour. The dancers made up for some injuries by giving us fantastic performances. A shout out to Mariah who demonstrated professionalism and amazing technique with grace and power. Also, we had great seats.

    SYTYCD event

by HB Lady on 12/4/19Fred Kavli Theatre- B of A Performing Arts Center,Thousand Oaks - Thousand Oaks

Great experience. First time at this venue. Easy to find & easy access to parking. Venue was great too. I purchased a ticket in the mezzanine area and it was perfect for this event. I wanted to be a little high so I could see the formations. My only complaint, there wasn't much to purchase food/snacks. But that's the only thing that could be improved. Thanks.

Best one I've attended and will come back to future tours

by Konster on 12/4/19Fred Kavli Theatre- B of A Performing Arts Center,Thousand Oaks - Thousand Oaks

Seeing the dancers perform live was wonderful; they did a terrific job and the choreography/music was top-notch. Loved everything about it. Even though Gino was unable to dance due to injuries, the other male dancers really stepped up - Benjamin, Ezra and Eddie - to take his parts in the routines the audience wanted to see. All the dancers were amazing, Lauren & Cyrus were fantastic co-hosts (and funny too!). Baily is a star, his footwork was even quicker in person - and his joy of dance & personality shined bright. I laughed, danced in my seat, and definitely shed some tears at the beauty of story telling presented through dance. One of the most talented top 10 and glad that I could see them perform live.

    Love this cast

by Mindy Moss on 12/3/19San Jose Civic - San Jose

Really missed Gino in this performance however. Eddie and Benjy took some of his numbers so his illness must be an issue and we as fans are worried about him. Hoping he is well soon. Ensemble numbers are the best! Bailey is Beloved!

    Better seating

by Redwine on 12/3/19San Jose Civic - San Jose

It was a good experience, I just know for next time to sit in balcony or pay more money for closer seats. We were a little more than halfway back and were able to catch glimpses of the stage in between the heads in front of us. They did have 2 screens in the front that we were able to watch the action on. It was a step up from watching it on the tv at home because you could tell it was live...lesson learned. Dancers were amazing!

Love this show & highly recommend it to my friends! :)

    by It'sMeNotYou on 12/2/19Moore Theatre - Seattle

My husband and I have have seen at least 8 live tour shows since our first one, season 4. The format of the show is great the way they move from dance to dance smoothly by incorporating each one into the next, creating an almost continuous show (except the intermission). I can't help but dance in my seat. :) I also can't say how much I love the show! I can't wait for next season to start! There are only two things I would like to see change: one is that they would start the show with the top 20 dancers again; the other is that they would put the shows on DVD so the fans could purchase the shows and watch the dancers and dances again. :) Thank you SYTYCD for putting on a great show! :)
