About

In 2005, Glasgow-based Snow Patrol toured with U2, appeared at Live 8 at both Hyde Park and Scotland and somehow still found time to write and record a new album. Their May 2006 release, Eyes Open, is the follow-up to their phenomenally successful Final Straw, and it has exceeded all expectations. The album went straight to #1 on the album charts in the UK and Ireland and the first singles "You're All I Have" and "Hands Open" are receiving massive airplay on both sides of the Atlantic. In this Ticketmaster exclusive interview, keyboard player Tom Simpson speaks about the band's early years, the new album and their current tour.

TM: Do you remember the moment when you first knew you wanted to be a musician?
TS:
Not really because before I started working with the band and stuff I always felt like a DJ, running clubs and stuff like that, so I probably wanted to be a DJ before I wanted to be in a band and the rest sort of followed suit. I kinda started doing stuff in the early years for Snow Patrol and not really playing an instrument and such...a couple of synthesizers and a turn table you know. So becoming a musician has become a gradual thing for me. It wasn't like a thing from when I was a child. It's just been an obvious progression for me so I can't remember at what point I said "oh hang on, I'm a musician." It just sort of developed over the years, so it's bit of weird one to ask for me, you know. But that's the best I can explain it.

TM: When did you start playing the keyboard?
TS:
Probably in my late 20s or something like that. I just recently started doing classical piano lessons. When I was about 17 that's when I started DJing. I DJed for years and then somebody said "why don't you start doing this." And then last year or something I sent myself back to school to do proper piano lessons. And that's been quite interesting—especially when you're a little bit later in life learning to do things, it can be a bit of a challenge, but a worthwhile challenge.

TM: Who do you consider your biggest musical influences?
TS:
This is really tricky because I've got such a broad taste in music I couldn't distill it down to one person. If you ever go to my house it's just wall to wall of vinyl. I couldn't do it off the top of my head because I would regret saying everyone I said because it's too hard to distill it down to individuals because it's all linked, my influences...If I have to name one person I would have to list another 10 people that were in that same bracket to justify it so we could be here all day listing.

TM: Got it. Totally understood! So how did you come to be a member of Snow Patrol?

    Magic

by vancitytravelmum on 3/24/22The Cathedral Sanctuary at Immanuel Presbyterian - Los Angeles

I'm biased as this is my favourite band of all time but they sure brought the best of themselves in this acoustic tour. It was intimate and emotional and funny and lively and everything music should be to fill your soul. Loved them all!

    Forgetting the words

by Disappointed on 3/24/22The Cathedral Sanctuary at Immanuel Presbyterian - Los Angeles

I realize artists make mistakes sometimes, but Gary completely stopped the concert in two different occasions because he forgot the words to the songs. He is really funny and made a joke about forgetting the words even though the lyrics are posted right in front of him. It was strange. Ian did a great job filling in for Johnny with late notice.

    Excellent Show!

by Stacie on 3/24/22The Cathedral Sanctuary at Immanuel Presbyterian - Los Angeles

This was my first time seeing Snow Patrol live. Long time fan of their music & they were great! It was acoustic, so more mellow, but great energy from the band as a whole. And Gary Lightbody was so personable & engaging with the audience, awesome sense of humor & wit, not to mention that lovely Irish voice! Top notch overall!

Saint Patrick’s Day with Snow Patrol

by Chef Jeff on 3/21/22Palace of Fine Arts - San Francisco

Great night we waited 2 years for. Palace of Fine Arts is the best pace to see A show small intimate and incredible sound. It’s very easy to access and Chestnut Street just around the corner it’s a great place to have a meal or drinks to get you in the mood. It was a three-piece band with Gary Lightbody surrounded by a guitar player and a keyboardist. Gary’s voice was incredible and the passion he put in the music was definitely noticeable. Typically I like a variety of songs and it was Snow Patrol it was OK that they played their hits. Gary also had very good stage presence and made for a very entertaining evening. They played about 17 songs and some very good banter from the stage. It was a very memorable night of music and it’s so nice when you see a band like that in a small venue .

An acoustic night with Snow Patrol & Iain Archer

by M. E. on 3/21/22Palace of Fine Arts - San Francisco

Very enjoyable evening with Snow Patrol and Iain Archer. First time at Palace of the Fine Arts and appreciated the small-ish venue. Ideal for the acoustic performances and the feeling of getting to know the artists.

    Great show

by Musiclover on 3/21/22Palace of Fine Arts - San Francisco

Saw Snow Patrol at the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco. Very nice place to see a concert. The concert was very good. Gary, the lead singer, is very funny, He seemed to be speaking from his heart rather than delivering something that was scripted. They are one of a very few groups that I have seen that sound better on stage than their records. Very enjoyable evening. Can't wait to see them again.

    Great to see a show!

by Sararus on 3/20/22Palace of Fine Arts - San Francisco

Love this theater! The grounds are gorgeous. The staff were friendly and helpful. This show was rescheduled twice due to Covid. For a lot of us it was our first night out in years. Snow Patrol did not disappoint. Gary Lightbody’s voice was in fine form. The acoustic arrangements enhanced the songs. Two new songs were a treat! Overall an excellent evening. Can’t wait to see this band again!

Best acoustic show I have ever seen!

by Jodi on 3/20/22Palace of Fine Arts - San Francisco

Everything about this show was perfect. Not only my favorite band but the venue was incredible - it’s a large theater but so intimate. Not a bad seat in the place! The set list was perfection for acoustic and it made me forget every single thing outside of that theater for a few hours. The opening singer, Iian Archer was fantastic also-didn’t expect to get some Tired Pony love also! Thank you Snow Patrol!

    Meh- Poor substitute

by BritAtBay on 3/20/22Palace of Fine Arts - San Francisco

I knew this was going to be an acoustic show - and having seen the band live many times and Gary Lightbody do a solo acoustic I was looking forward to it. However, this show was a poor substitute. Only two band members showed up and although Lightbody was entertaining and they powered through their hits the sound became a drag. The guitarist used his electric axe to ad some dimension but a big theme of Snow Patrols music is the crescendo of sound. This was lost in this format. I left feeling I’d been duped.

    Pleasant experience for a newbie

by Tom on 3/9/22Lincoln Theatre - Washington

First concert in decades. First acoustic -livelier than I expected. New to Snow Patrol-only about half dozen years-Their hits were well done-new material was enjoyable as the front man really had an embracing dialogue with the audience. As for the venue itself-you couldn't ask for a more intimate setting. (only wish I could have stayed for the whole thing)
