About

In 2005, Glasgow-based Snow Patrol toured with U2, appeared at Live 8 at both Hyde Park and Scotland and somehow still found time to write and record a new album. Their May 2006 release, Eyes Open, is the follow-up to their phenomenally successful Final Straw, and it has exceeded all expectations. The album went straight to #1 on the album charts in the UK and Ireland and the first singles "You're All I Have" and "Hands Open" are receiving massive airplay on both sides of the Atlantic. In this Ticketmaster exclusive interview, keyboard player Tom Simpson speaks about the band's early years, the new album and their current tour.

TM: Do you remember the moment when you first knew you wanted to be a musician?
TS:
Not really because before I started working with the band and stuff I always felt like a DJ, running clubs and stuff like that, so I probably wanted to be a DJ before I wanted to be in a band and the rest sort of followed suit. I kinda started doing stuff in the early years for Snow Patrol and not really playing an instrument and such...a couple of synthesizers and a turn table you know. So becoming a musician has become a gradual thing for me. It wasn't like a thing from when I was a child. It's just been an obvious progression for me so I can't remember at what point I said "oh hang on, I'm a musician." It just sort of developed over the years, so it's bit of weird one to ask for me, you know. But that's the best I can explain it.

TM: When did you start playing the keyboard?
TS:
Probably in my late 20s or something like that. I just recently started doing classical piano lessons. When I was about 17 that's when I started DJing. I DJed for years and then somebody said "why don't you start doing this." And then last year or something I sent myself back to school to do proper piano lessons. And that's been quite interesting—especially when you're a little bit later in life learning to do things, it can be a bit of a challenge, but a worthwhile challenge.

TM: Who do you consider your biggest musical influences?
TS:
This is really tricky because I've got such a broad taste in music I couldn't distill it down to one person. If you ever go to my house it's just wall to wall of vinyl. I couldn't do it off the top of my head because I would regret saying everyone I said because it's too hard to distill it down to individuals because it's all linked, my influences...If I have to name one person I would have to list another 10 people that were in that same bracket to justify it so we could be here all day listing.

TM: Got it. Totally understood! So how did you come to be a member of Snow Patrol?

    Snow Patrol was AMAZING!!!!

    by planet1026 on 9/11/09Myth - Maplewood

it was an amazing concert, and the lead singer was incredible. funny, fun, and in the midst of a TON of technical difficulties that were affecting the actual show, he just rolled with flow and kept going, all the while supporting the efforts of the technical team, and THANKING them for all they do. the band was wonderfully patient and beautifully showed the audience that truly, ATTITUDE IS EVERYTHING. the warm up band PLAIN WHITE T's were amazing too. the lead singer has a beautiful tone to his voice, and i would DEFINITELY go see both of these bands again.

    Snow Patrol was shite

by Wanker on 9/11/09State Theatre - Minneapolis

I am a big Snow Patrol fan and loved the last Twin Cities show they did at Northrup. But this thing they did to OPEN their concert tour at the State Theater Thursday night...not good. I mean c'mon, don't they do a friggin' sound check? It's one thing to have a guitar problem, it can to happen to anyone on stage, but fix it and move on. It kept happening over and over though and how many times can you apologize and make excuses? Their set list seemed somewhat haphazard and vocal arrangements not very tight and the sound from my very good seat was muddy. I was astonished when I read their concert tour that takes them to Chicago's Soldier Field and the Letterman Show and the UK and Canada, etc., actually BEGAN in the Twin Cities. I guess it was the central location or something but we weren't the lucky ones. Hopefully Gary and the gang can tighten the show, fix the guitar gremlins and move on, but this particular show was definitely a disappointment.

    More than Amazing

by NessB on 9/11/09Myth - Maplewood

I always thought those girls that cried at Beatles' concerts were weird and crazy..... I cried when Snow Patrol came out on stage the first time, during Run, Chasing Cars and Crack the Shutters. I'm still beaming from the fact that I actually finally saw my all time favorite band in the flesh! The concert was absolutely AMAZING. And they were good sports about all the malfunctions during the concert. I could listen to them for the rest of my life and the songs would never get old. Absolutely ADORE Snow Patrol.

    SNOW PATROL

    by novamx3 on 9/11/09Myth - Maplewood

Good show... lots of technical difficulties. Older set list which was okay. It was the first of the tour so I will cut them some slack. Our seats were amazing 2nd row in the orchestra pit!

Snow Patrol-- Problematic, but still AWESOME

by Samantharaah on 9/11/09Myth - Maplewood

This show seemed to have problems straight from the start, the venue change from the Myth to the State Theatre caused a lot of problems for the concert goers themselves in switching the tickets, although the State Theatre is still a more intimate venue than the northrup, which is the last concert of theirs I saw. From the get-go, the plain white T's weren't anything amazing, but they were at least a good opener. The equipment went just fine for their show, but when Snow Patrol came on it was problems everywhere, the lead singers guitar wouldn't work so they had to re-arrange the set-list, and his mic kept cutting out. You could tell that this was the first leg of their tour here, but they still did amazing. With all the problems the lead singer was so frazzled he even forgot one of his songs during the encore! They were good natured about it, and played more than enough songs, and it was over all, despite the problems, a concert worth seeing.

    Loved Snow Patrol

    by minnesota3 on 9/11/09Myth - Maplewood

Despite the recurrent technical difficulties, the performance was outstanding. Loved all the music, and loved seeing the easy-going, funny personality of the band as they dealt with glitches and worked the crowd!! Also so happy the venue changed from the Myth to the State Theatre--what great place!

I didnt know what to expect

by mplsdooder on 9/11/09Myth - Maplewood

I was impressed. My past experiences with hundreds of concerts was strictly heavy metal venues (slayer, korn, etc). I didn't know how to just sit / stand and relax to a more calm entertaining show. It was entertaining! I have heard some of the music before on the radio, my girlfriend was very interested in going, so I decided to get tickets for me and 2 others. We all loved the show! The lead singer of Snow Patrol was pretty entertaining, he kept it live. Hope you enjoy the show if you bought tix in another city!

by mrsx on 9/11/09Myth - Maplewood

a few techinical difficulties in the beginning were a little frustrating but they have great humor about it and that made it alright--State Theatre was so much better as a venue than Myth-thank goodness it was changed--absolutely fantastic artists!!

Snow Patrol- great talent, great music!

by AtTheWell on 9/11/09Myth - Maplewood

This event was moved from the Myth to the State Theatre. Despite the many technical difficulties they had to overcome, Snow Patrol delivered! Or, maybe, "knocked it out of the park" is a better description ;-). The wit and genuinely humble attitude of Gary Lightbody, not to mention his passionately delivered vocals and the excellent, unfailingly precise musicianship of the band, all combined to make for an amazing concert experience. They keep it intimate by engaging the crowd (rather than ignoring them like some) and truly deliver a great musical performance. Thanks Snow Patrol! Come back to Minneapolis ASAP! We love you!

    SnowPartol rocked once again!!

    by jacqui236 on 9/11/09Myth - Maplewood

Snow Patrol is one of the only bands that sounds better live then on recording. Although there were a few hiccups along the way, with the guitar not working. They made it work by keeping the mood light, still playing songs that didn't require that particular instrument, and joking about with the crowd. They were overall one of the best performers in both entertainment and quality then i have ever seen.

Snow Patrol at the State Theater was tremendous!

by ebeckman on 9/11/09Myth - Maplewood

Despite numerous issues with amps/sound, etc, Snow Patrol did an amazing show! They were extremely entertatining and funny and managed to improvise flawlessly when technical problems occurred. I will definitely see them again next time they are in the Twin Cities! Also, their opener, Plain White T's was fantastic - definitely buying their album!

    Snow Patrol THIRLLED Minneapolis!

by Typpover on 9/11/09State Theatre - Minneapolis

Tech difficulty plagued the start of Snow Patrol's performance. This lead to Lightbody's flirting with the entire audience, and a few laughs. The early tech issues may have prevented them from giving the performance they had planned, but what they did create was art and an excellent experience. The ticket price was a "heck of a deal", getting more than your moneys' worth. Truly Outstanding! Do not miss Snow Patrol. If they aren't coming to you, go to them!

Snow Patrol wowed me in many ways!

by KelseySPFan on 9/11/09Myth - Maplewood

This show was moved to the State Theater, which was gorgeous; however, there were many technical difficulties with the band's guitars, and so Snow Patrol had a rough opening night to their tour. They ROCKED anyway though, and Gary (lead singer) kept the mood light and carefree with his charm and wit. Even though Snow Patrol probably left the stage stressed and upset about the guitar mess, the fans were in love and completely satisfied.

    Snow Patrol was amazzzing!

by Tranquilty on 9/11/09State Theatre - Minneapolis

Despite the technical difficulties they experienced for the bulk of the show, it was an incredible performance. The lead singer's, Gary's, incredible wit really carried things along. Cities 97's Studio C show with him previous to the concert really helped to set the stage for the rest of the evening.

    Snow Patrol kept it positive!

    by photogirl11 on 9/11/09Myth - Maplewood

I love Snow Patrol and this was my first time seeing them live. Unfortunately there were a number of technical disruptions through out the performance that interrupted the flow of the concert. Kudos to the group for keeping it positive and continuing on. In the end the bug just wouldn't go away... A disappointing start to their tour for all present. Despite the glitches I would go see them again.

Even with a few hiccups, Snow Patrol rocked!

by SPRun on 9/11/09Myth - Maplewood

At the start of the concert, some of the equipment didn't work. Other than that, they were very entertaining and distracted the crowd from the equipment malfunctions. Overall, my friends and I had a blast and we would see them again in a heartbeat!
