In 2005, Glasgow-based Snow Patrol toured with U2, appeared at Live 8 at both Hyde Park and Scotland and somehow still found time to write and record a new album. Their May 2006 release, Eyes Open, is the follow-up to their phenomenally successful Final Straw, and it has exceeded all expectations. The album went straight to #1 on the album charts in the UK and Ireland and the first singles "You're All I Have" and "Hands Open" are receiving massive airplay on both sides of the Atlantic. In this Ticketmaster exclusive interview, keyboard player Tom Simpson speaks about the band's early years, the new album and their current tour.
TM: Do you remember the moment when you first knew you wanted to be a musician?
TS: Not really because before I started working with the band and stuff I always felt like a DJ, running clubs and stuff like that, so I probably wanted to be a DJ before I wanted to be in a band and the rest sort of followed suit. I kinda started doing stuff in the early years for Snow Patrol and not really playing an instrument and such...a couple of synthesizers and a turn table you know. So becoming a musician has become a gradual thing for me. It wasn't like a thing from when I was a child. It's just been an obvious progression for me so I can't remember at what point I said "oh hang on, I'm a musician." It just sort of developed over the years, so it's bit of weird one to ask for me, you know. But that's the best I can explain it.
TM: When did you start playing the keyboard?
TS: Probably in my late 20s or something like that. I just recently started doing classical piano lessons. When I was about 17 that's when I started DJing. I DJed for years and then somebody said "why don't you start doing this." And then last year or something I sent myself back to school to do proper piano lessons. And that's been quite interesting—especially when you're a little bit later in life learning to do things, it can be a bit of a challenge, but a worthwhile challenge.
TM: Who do you consider your biggest musical influences?
TS: This is really tricky because I've got such a broad taste in music I couldn't distill it down to one person. If you ever go to my house it's just wall to wall of vinyl. I couldn't do it off the top of my head because I would regret saying everyone I said because it's too hard to distill it down to individuals because it's all linked, my influences...If I have to name one person I would have to list another 10 people that were in that same bracket to justify it so we could be here all day listing.
TM: Got it. Totally understood! So how did you come to be a member of Snow Patrol?
TS:
I love this band!!! This band is exceptional and Gary L.'s interaction with the crowd just makes it that much better.
Def recommend! Song choice, acoustics, performance all great. Venue was perfect, intimate, like a private concert. Only negative was the mask requirement and no snacks, but not a big deal.
This is my favorite band! I’m a huge fan. Decided to bring four of my friends to the show who really didn’t follow them. They LOVED the show, and Snow Patrol just gained a few more fans. Gary’s voice is perfection. Nate’s moves are hot. Iain was the perfect fill in for Johnny. Pablo, and the two Johnny’s were missed, but the acoustic versions were awesome! New music was so beautiful. Lyrics reach into your chest, grab hold of your heart and squeeze. Painful and beautiful at the same time.
I had never seen this band before and listened to them during the pandemic. I was so excited to see them in person and this venue was ideal because it was intimate setting in a beautiful and legendary theatre.
Theater venue, seated! Didn’t think that would be a live music event set up I like. But it did somehow. At the end we all were standing and dancing, at least in the back! Waited so long to see SnowPetrol live again… totally worth it ❤️😎
SNOW PATROL is wonderful - engaging, moving, and inspiring. They connect with an audience beautifully and the concert was a real treat.
Just a beautiful evening! Seeing Snow Patrol in a small venue and the energy of the audience was incredible. The sound was perfect.
Beautiful beyond words! Forever grateful! Iain Archer joined in place of McDaid. He opened, too (unexpected and such a lovely surprise). Everything I hoped out of the acoustic sets in such an intimate setting. I really feel so lucky to have been there, with great seats for both shows. Gary is such a present performer and one of my favorite humans ever. It seemed he was as happy to be with us as we were with him, which is the way it should be. Soul food.
The venue was amazing with great acoustics and an intimate setting. The concert was fabulous as Snow Patrol offers one of the best live acts ever. You don't just listen to their music, you feel it. Love this band and they picked a wonderful venue. Can't wait until they tour the U.S. again.
Awesome concert. They are so musically talented Great performance very underrated band
What a night!! Snow Patrol did not disappoint. Ian Archer pulled off double duty in great fashion. He treated us to a great mix of his old and new work, along with a few Tired Pony gems. Gary Lightbody and Nathan Connolly delivered the crowd favorites, along with some very special new songs. The night was not long enough.
It was an amazing unplugged concert! The friendly atmosphere made it so special. And the acoustic of the Hall is nr.1! Gary’s voice is so clear and extraordinary! I will never forget this concert. Thanks to be a part of this experience!
We were lucky enough to get tickets to Snow Patrol's last stop on their US Tour. The Wiltern is an excellent venue, built in the 1930s and has around 1,500 capacity. The show was excellent, great playlist and energy thought the show. Our only complaint, and this was noted in reviews from previous stops, was the sound mix. It was very heavy on the bass side and the mix had the background music at almost the same level of Gary Lightbody's voice. That's fixable, so I wouldn't hesitate to see them again!
went with my 21 years old daughter. we were in mezzanine. the wiltern seat is kind of close to each other, guess that's why people don't stood up and dance, but we both had fun. this is the first time we've seen the band. they were great. definitely will see them the next time they come around.
We've been lucky enough to see Snow Patrol 3 times in the last 8 months but wow, you were totally amazing in Las Vegas baby. Everything was fantastic, from the venue (at The Joint - apart from the cost of drinks, but we expect to pay big these days), our seats (within touching distance of the band) and the show. The best ever!!!
Very cold air conditioning , need a coat or sweater to really in joy the evening ,
It was great to hear Snow Patrol after such a long break. I forgot how much their songs meant. The concert was fantastic!
Fantastic venue. Snow patrol were fantastic great interaction with the crowd. Loved it!
Impressed with the venue 1st thing. Not a bad seat in the house. Really liked the artists prior to Snow Patrol. However I feel one is sufficient. The sound was not the best for the vocals on the second act, all the instruments were too loud to hear her voice. It took through the first song to adjust for Snow Patrol and improve. Great performance by SP, good variety of songs, (both new and older). Loved the show, would travel to this venue AND the group again.
The lads know how to keep coming up with new ways to awe each minute of the show. With such an extensive library of favorites to choose from its so hard to temper eager expectations against the final curtain and yet an hour and a half after the Chocolate appetizer and the hills and valleys of hard cords and rifts to acoustic ballads we left with a happy jumble of bridges and choruses playing on repeat in our heads. And we weren't alone, as the Hard Rock was alive with a sea of fans humming familiar tunes from the guys. Gary was a bit more subdued than usual yet hit all the high notes (maybe not vocally, he knows what we mean!) of what make a Snow Patrol gig so endearing like the hand aloft as the Joint sang his lyrics to the band. Thanks for the joy! Can't wait to see Snow Patrol the next time they tour!
