Snarky Puppy on Tour
With a jazz-minded head and a jam-band heart, Snarky Puppy are the ultimate live act. A collective of 40-odd rotating members who typically play shows in groups of 10 to 20, they frequently play with guests ranging from David Crosby to Charlie Hunter to the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Led by bassist and composer Michael League, this rogues' gallery of instrumental misfits stir up all sorts of styles — rock, jazz, funk, R&B, Afrobeat, fusion and various world strains — into one big roiling pot of groove. Snarky Puppy have been playing together in various iterations since 2004, and live recordings of their countless club shows, festival stops and concert hall gigs are feverishly collected by fans with good reason. No two concerts are alike, thanks not only to an ever-shifting lineup but also to a healthy dose of improvisation. When they have the space to stretch out, Snarky Puppy can easily go a couple of hours onstage, playing songs from their 10-plus official albums plus plenty of imagination-infused, on-the-spot riffing.
Snarky Puppy in Concert
Though Snarky Puppy are based in Brooklyn, Michael League founded the group in Denton, Texas, under ironic circumstances considering the group's runaway success. As a freshman jazz major at the University of North Texas in 2004, he wasn't good enough to place in any school ensembles. Starting his own band was a way to play the music he'd loved since his teenage years. And since then, Snarky Puppy have not only become a legendary live band, but won three Grammys: Best R&B Performance for their Lalah Hathaway–sung cover of "Something" (on 2013's Family Dinner, Vol. 1), and Best Contemporary Instrumental Album for both 2015's Sylva (with the Dutch Metropole Orkest) and 2016's Culcha Vulcha. The group's unwieldy roster happened by accident. In Snarky Puppy's early days, members couldn't afford to turn down gigs with bigger touring artists, so League would bring in pinch players, train them and put them on the road. But between the bonds formed and knowledge acquired, it seemed a waste to kick them out afterward. Hence, "The Fam," as they're called, grew and grew, from Snarky Puppy's self-released debut, 2005's Live at Uncommon Ground, through League's move to New York, and on to albums like 2019's Immigrance, which leans deeply into the members' multicultural backgrounds to arrive at a sound that's continually new and evolving.
Over the course of their career, Snarky Puppy have brought many venues to capacity, like Warner Theatre (Washington, D.C.) and the Hollywood Bowl (Los Angeles).

One of the best shows I’ve ever seen I was blown away
Great experience, awesome, congratulations!!!!!!!!!
Great show and venue can’t wait until the next one. Standing room floor section had great sound and visibility.
The band was unbelievably tight. Never heard a band with such complex rhythms one could groove to. Daughter and I were bobbing the whole time.
Everything about the night was good for my soul. The theatre was inspiring. The audience was responsive and appreciative. The band was incredible as always.
As live music continues its rise from the ashes of the pandemic, it was awesome to see this band once again. SP is singularly unique in their approach. As a musical collective, their personnel evolve and change, as does their music. This keeps their compositions and performances fresh and unique for both the band members and the audience. SP's music will find your auditory and cognitive receptors for experimental jazz and massage them into bliss. Jerry Garcia once said that Grateful Dead's music is kind of like licorice - not everyone likes licorice, but the people who do like licorice REALLY REALLY like licorice. SP's music is similar - if you happen to possess the proper auditory and cognitive receptors - or are open to developing them - SP will bliss you out. :) One other note: The Paramount Theatre in Oakland is epic and unparalleled. However, just once I would love to see SP play at an open floor theater such as the Fillmore.
My boyfriend & I are huge fans of Snarky Puppy! This was our first Snarky Puppy concert we have been waiting for since Oct.! Listening to the songs in person made us feel like we were back into the present grooving. The crowd was even able to get an encore to make it last a lil bit longer!
I sat in the balcony, great view and sound was excellent! Having listed too the group for a year or so on Spotify, the live performance was totally great! I'm a snow bird from Wisconsin that had checked out the menu at the Rialto about a month before the concert!😃👏👍
From buying the tickets to the evening performance the experience was easy and trouble free. Parking was readily available and inexpensive. The actual concert was more than I expected with excellent musicians and the venue was perfect. I will definitely keep using ticketmaster for purchasing my tickets in the future.
The music was amazing of course. Couple of the guys need to smile a bit more haha, but hey, the music killed. The lighting was the suprise for me. Lighting was awesome.
So happy to have been able to support Bobby and so incredibly thankful for all the talent and love on the stage that night
Totally enjoyed and amazed by S.P's continued high level musicianship, energy, and live arrangements. House of Waters: totally disappointed by the sound mix. Sitting just to right of center in balcony. When it was being played, all I could hear was the bass drum. Kept waiting/hoping sound engineer would correct - but did not happen. Not a good result when one of the trio is playing a hammer dulcimer. Maybe that's the sound the band wanted that night, but it ruined an otherwise delightful live performance by unique, talented trio. (The bass drum is well-balanced on their studio recordings, imho)
To start off, I did like the concert. That being said, it seemed as though they were having sound problems. At times all the instruments were drowning each other out. For the most part, they only played new songs. Don't get me wrong, I liked the songs, but I go to a concert to hear the greatest hits. They only played "Lingus", their greatest hit at the very end during an "encore". Still love the group, but they could have done better. I will say that the warm up band performed well.
Not as exciting as I expected. Opening band was better!
This we the second time I saw Snarky Puppy and it ties with the first time for the best show I've ever seen. Check em out, incredible musicians.
Show at the Ryman wow Snarky Puppy double wow. The opening band was so different and fantastic. Snarky Puppy are no doubt the best there is don't miss them.
I've been to a lot of shows, but I've never seen this level of connection in a band. If you have a chance to see them live, try to get a seat close to the stage so you can see it up close. It's amazing.
It's been a long time since the music moved me the way this band's music moves me. I am an older fella, but a drummer in multiple bands for many years. These fella's are just great musicians, who have found a way to express their musical joy so we can all get into it with them. They were having fun, and they shared it with the audience. I've seen many shows at the Ryman, but I have never seen such an outpouring of thanks and admiration from the crowd toward any act. They got a standing ovation after every other song all night. And the band had to stop because of the length of the ovation, and you could see they were genuinely touched by the joy coming back toward the stage. It was a wonderful experience to be a part of. In addition, almost all the songs were from a new album, which is often a downer for the crowd, who hasn't heard these songs and wants to hear the hits that brought the band to recognition. But the new music was just as powerful, thoughtful, interesting and provocative as the songs that brought us to buy these tickets to come and see this band. I can't wait for them to come back as soon as possible. I've downloaded the new album last night because I want to learn those songs I heard. Thanks to Snarky Puppy for bringing the joy and sharing it with us.
Good sound, very close to their albums. Would go see them again.
Snarky Puppy put together an amazing show. Each musician is worth going to see just on their own. When they come together they take music to a new level. They play together perfectly as one. The show was put together in a way that drew you in and transported you to another place. I did not want it to end. The joy it brought to the audience left the place full of smiles. The musicians clearly delighted in the virtuosity of each other and their love of music filled the room. The music makes a genre of its own. When I die I hope the afterlife is filled with the same feelings I got at this show. The joy brought tears to my eyes. Thank-you to every member of the band and their support team for an unforgettable experience.
