Snarky Puppy on Tour

With a jazz-minded head and a jam-band heart, Snarky Puppy are the ultimate live act. A collective of 40-odd rotating members who typically play shows in groups of 10 to 20, they frequently play with guests ranging from David Crosby to Charlie Hunter to the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Led by bassist and composer Michael League, this rogues' gallery of instrumental misfits stir up all sorts of styles — rock, jazz, funk, R&B, Afrobeat, fusion and various world strains — into one big roiling pot of groove. Snarky Puppy have been playing together in various iterations since 2004, and live recordings of their countless club shows, festival stops and concert hall gigs are feverishly collected by fans with good reason. No two concerts are alike, thanks not only to an ever-shifting lineup but also to a healthy dose of improvisation. When they have the space to stretch out, Snarky Puppy can easily go a couple of hours onstage, playing songs from their 10-plus official albums plus plenty of imagination-infused, on-the-spot riffing.

Snarky Puppy in Concert

Though Snarky Puppy are based in Brooklyn, Michael League founded the group in Denton, Texas, under ironic circumstances considering the group's runaway success. As a freshman jazz major at the University of North Texas in 2004, he wasn't good enough to place in any school ensembles. Starting his own band was a way to play the music he'd loved since his teenage years. And since then, Snarky Puppy have not only become a legendary live band, but won three Grammys: Best R&B Performance for their Lalah Hathaway–sung cover of "Something" (on 2013's Family Dinner, Vol. 1), and Best Contemporary Instrumental Album for both 2015's Sylva (with the Dutch Metropole Orkest) and 2016's Culcha Vulcha. The group's unwieldy roster happened by accident. In Snarky Puppy's early days, members couldn't afford to turn down gigs with bigger touring artists, so League would bring in pinch players, train them and put them on the road. But between the bonds formed and knowledge acquired, it seemed a waste to kick them out afterward. Hence, "The Fam," as they're called, grew and grew, from Snarky Puppy's self-released debut, 2005's Live at Uncommon Ground, through League's move to New York, and on to albums like 2019's Immigrance, which leans deeply into the members' multicultural backgrounds to arrive at a sound that's continually new and evolving.

Over the course of their career, Snarky Puppy have brought many venues to capacity, like Warner Theatre (Washington, D.C.) and the Hollywood Bowl (Los Angeles).

  • Excellent performance, venue staff too noisy.

by Arkley on 8/31/25Blue Note Summer Sessions - NapaRating: 4 out of 5

Snarky Puppy was excellent! their sound system was excellent. the seating staff were really helpful. My only complaint was that the custodial staff were constantly running large garbage bins on wheels through the back of the concert arena making huge amounts of noise, sometimes during delicate parts of the music, creating a major disturbance. It happened several times during the performance. My suggestion is to buy silent tote bins or have the staff wait until the music is finished to carry out the trash.

  • Incredible show...but those seats! I yi yi!

by Julie on 8/28/25Blue Note Summer Sessions - NapaRating: 4 out of 5

We loved the show...but the seats are too close together. It would be a more enjoyable experience if the seats were spaced a bit further apart. We were in the second row of the Silver section and had a great view of the stage. The performance was excellent and exciting. We loved it. But many of us felt squished together. Enjoyed a delicious dinner at Oat and Hay before the performance. It's a beautiful venue!

  • A Convert Was Made

by Buddy M on 10/9/24Humphreys Concerts By the Bay - San DiegoRating: 5 out of 5

One of the best concerts I have ever gone to. The music was great, soloists were outstanding, and a completely engaging experience start to finish. I was going to go by myself, but my girlfriend , joined me from across the country for my birthday . She LOVED it. Now she is a huge fan! She wasn’t into modern jazz before, but now she is, and even has some favorite Snarky Puppy tunes! Lucky ME! Looking forward to when we can go to another concert of theirs.

  • An amazing venue for a show

by Pacman on 10/3/24Humphreys Concerts By the Bay - San DiegoRating: 3 out of 5

This was a birthday gift for my wife to fly down to San Diego's Humphrey By the Bay. The venue is outstanding. I was a bit disappointed with Snarky Puppy's setlist. Some of the most popular music they didn't even play. They're encore was one song for one of their older albums. Which was very cool, but I was really looking forward to hearing their older stuff. I understand they may get tired of playing it, but understand your fan base was created on that music. There seems to be a trend with touring artists to where they want to play their new material, or experiment with songs. Of all the songs that they played, I recognized all of three. At one point I was starting to nod off the music was too mellow for a Monday evening show. Outstanding musicianship. But that can be seen anywhere. Snarky Puppy has a very unique sound, but I didn't quite hear it at the show. Nikki Glaspie what's the great addition. But not the drummer I was expecting to see. Adding a violin, and soloing On several of their songs, was not something I quite welcomed. Overall, this concert was not up to my standards as a Snarky Puppy fan. I'm not going to say I was disappointed because they're all great musicians, it just seems so something thrown together at the last minute. The communication during the show kind of supported that. I flew from Portland Oregon to San Diego completely excited to hear the music that I'm used to from the band. I just didn't hear it.

  • humphrey's is awesome

by steveo on 10/3/24Humphreys Concerts By the Bay - San DiegoRating: 5 out of 5

Great venue and sound comfortable and organized. Full bar and some bar food available. Snarky Puppy put on a great show 10 piece band alot of action. The show seemed alittle short on time with the encore short of 2 hours but still very worth it.

  • First time

by Abraham Nunez Tijuana on 10/3/24Humphreys Concerts By the Bay - San DiegoRating: 5 out of 5

I saw the LINGUS video in YouTube a while ago and thought “whenever this guys come to the US I will track them to watch them live, but it took sometime to receive that email from Ticketmaster, and when I red the email I did purchased them at once. The concert was as I expected, solid and powerful and even though they did not played Lingus it was phenomenal. It worth every penny.

  • Excellent Band, weak venue

by Ratboy on 10/2/24Terrace Theater - Long Beach Convention and Entertainment Center - Long BeachRating: 5 out of 5

This was the 6th or 7th time seeing Snarky Puppy. This was an unusual show for them as they typically challenge their audiences with new material. This show was tremendously satisfying as they played many familiar old favorites. Each musician is top-notch and it's a blast everytime I see them perform live. But the Long Beach Terrace Theater has long had notoriously bad acoustics. Having seen the Snarky Puppy in a variety of venues, I KNOW the sound can be balanced so you can hear every instrument clearly. Apparently the sound crew at Long Beach Terrace Theater cannot. The sound in Long Beach was muddy and flattened. I don't know if its the crew...I believe its the venue. I saw Elvis Costello there more than 10 years ago and the same issue existed. I swore off this venue and only came back because I love Snarky Puppy. But I won't be coming back until the interior of theater is renovated with a focus on the accoustics.
