About

Southern Methodist University Mustangs at Moody Coliseum

The University Park section of Dallas, Texas, is home to one of the most competitive men's basketball programs in the American Athletic Conference. The Southern Methodist Mustangs play out of Moody Coliseum, which first opened in 1956, and has a current capacity of 7,000. They are coached by Tim Jankovich, who previously led North Texas and Illinois State before becoming an assistant to SMU coach Larry Brown in 2012, replacing Brown in 2016.

SMU Mustangs Men's Basketball History

Southern Methodist University first fielded a basketball team in 1916, joining the Southwest Conference in 1918. SMU basketball had its greatest period of success under Doc Hayes, who coached the team from 1945 to 1967. In 1956, the Mustangs reached the Final Four behind the play of Jim Krebs, only to lose to Bill Russell and the University of San Francisco, and in overtime at the 1957 regional semifinals to Wilt Chamberlain and Kansas. In Hayes' final three seasons before retirement, the Mustangs made two appearances in the NCAA Sweet 16, followed by an Elite Eight loss to Southwest Conference rival Houston. SMU men's basketball was largely a non-factor in the following decades, with the exception of SWC championships in 1972, 1988 and 1993, plus a handful of NCAA tournament and NIT appearances.

The demise of the Southwest Conference in 1996 greatly affected SMU's stability, as the Mustangs would play first in the Western Athletic Conference, then Conference USA. A planned move to the Big East occurred during the schism that led to SMU becoming a charter member of the American Athletic Conference in 2013. The legendary Larry Brown helped lead SMU back into the national conversation as head coach from 2013 to 2016, although academic and ethical issues led to a nine-game coach's suspension and a postseason ban during Brown's final year. Behind the talent of Ben Moore, Shake Milton and Sterling Brown, the Mustangs won both the AAC regular season and tournament championships in 2017, and earned a 6-seed in the NCAA tournament before being upset by USC in the round of 64.

    Great experience

The new renovation is amazing. It is totally different. Larry Brown has this thing going in the right direction and I will be back for sure. The concourse is much larger and there are plenty of restrooms and there isn't a bad seat in the house.

Better See Larry Brown & The Mustangs Now

    by 60sPony on 3/1/13Moody Coliseum - Dallas

Because when they start winning big-time, and they will, tickets will be hard to come by! Was ridiculous how low the attendance was! Dallas should better support its major university. Oh well, you missed a great game. And this will become a tough ticket when they start winning. Don't wait.

Great experience. Moody Coliseum is aging but still a great place to see a game. Exciting full of energy despite the Mustangs going down. Definitely will attend future games.

A very good and closely played game

by PlanoPlayer on 1/4/13Moody Coliseum - Dallas

The game was very entertaining because it was close from the opening jump through the final whistle. I don't think either team ever had a lead greater than 3-4 points the entire game. The defense by both teams was very tight. In the end, I think the Mustangs lost because Wyoming's defense turned out to be a shade better and more consistent., and SMU did not execute down the stretch, not to mention a couple of late 3 pointers from Wyoming's center which was not expected. An additional comment. I go to one or two SMU basketball games a year and this was my first this season. There were more people in the stands that in games past and I am guessing there will continue to be more and more people attending due to Coach Larry Brown's efforts and legacy and it would not surprise me if SMU gets to sellout situation either next year or the year after.

    We Lost

by MileHiRye on 3/5/12Moody Coliseum - Dallas

It was sad to see which is obviously a very talented team (UTEP) play unenthused and poorly, against a terrible SMU team. Besides that very pleasurable.

    Georgia Southern at SMU

by Fastestinthewest on 11/29/11Moody Coliseum - Dallas

Smart SMU band plays music to kill any noise made by other fans. Band does die back when a threat seems about to close down SMU. Head Basketball Coach gives hi fi to band director after game. Plenty of empty seats. Ushers suck to make sure fan sits in seats even with a lot of empty seats in area.

We had seats 4 rows from the court and we were sitting right next to the Alumni section so I had some great surroundings!

    Mustangs got game.

    by DocSavage10 on 12/6/10Moody Coliseum - Dallas

SMU men's basketball game against Grambling State was a pretty lopsided win by the Mustangs, but was good entertainment overall. Very few people showed up for it (about as many as show for my son's middle school games!) But, good seats were easy to come by, and parking was a breeze. Not as glitzy as UT or the Mavs, but good basketball.
