Southern Methodist Mustangs at Gerald J. Ford Stadium
The Dallas suburb of University Park, Texas, is home to a team with both historic successes to its name and high hopes for the future. The SMU Mustangs play at Gerald J. Ford Stadium, which opened in 2000 and seats 32,000. The stadium is not named after former President Gerald R. Ford, but for a local banker and SMU booster who donated $20 million toward the cost of building the stadium. They are coached by Daniel "Sonny" Dykes, who previously led Louisiana Tech and Cal to bowl appearances before taking over from Chad Morris after the 2017 season.
SMU Mustangs Football History
Southern Methodist University first fielded a varsity football team in 1915, only four years after the school was founded. The Mustangs soon became a force to be reckoned with in Texas college football and in the Southwest Conference, winning 10 conference championships before its disestablishment in 1995. Halfback Doak Walker won the Heisman Trophy for his hometown Mustangs in 1948, and is the namesake of the Doak Walker Trophy, which honors the nation's top college running back. SMU has claims to three national championships, in 1935, 1981 and 1982, and has been the home of such legendary players as Don Meredith, Raymond Berry, and the one-two backfield combo from the early ‘80s, Eric Dickerson and Craig James.
In 1987, the SMU football program was assessed with a "death penalty" for continued recruiting violations, which led to the cancellation of the 1987 and 1988 seasons. While former SMU great and NFL head coach Forrest Gregg did what he could in rebuilding the program from 1989 to 1990, the Mustangs would not have another winning season until 1996, or another bowl appearance until 2009 under June Jones. SMU eventually regained their foothold under Jones, followed by Morris and Dykes, and spent time in the Western Athletic Conference and Conference USA before joining the American Athletic Conference in 2013. In 2019, the SMU Mustangs came roaring back into the national spotlight, after a 6-0 start including a triple-overtime battle against Tulsa and a victory over archrival TCU in the Battle for the Iron Skillet — their first since 2011.
Glad TCU won but they sure should of played better.
I along with many others could not locate the Will Call for Tickets. The signage as well as the ticket folks in other stations were not informed and the venue needs better signs.
What an atmosphere! I was in red for the ponies (SMU '74), and my sons wore their purple, (TCU 08). The game was great fun but, the parking was lousy . Next year have it at the Cotton Bowl to open the State Fair!!!!!
Game was great! SMU is on the rise. Unfortunately QB Padron did not have his best game, but things are definitely looking up on the Hilltop!
GREAT SEATS, EASY TO VIEW THE EVENT, GOOD SECURITY
Love to go to the Mustang games at Ford Stadium! So fun! Great for families as well! Highly Recommend SMU football games. The campus is beautiful, hosts always friendly and helpful and the student body is full of class and enthusiasm! Event logistics are well-planned by the university staff.
Had a great time. Ford Stadium was full and pretty load.
The students were terrible. We watch several get thrown out. I was there with my 11 year old son and he had to listen to the SMU students curse and call the other teams fans names. I must say the TCU fans were much better sports. I was there as a fan of SMU, not anymore.
Stadium felt small; however, environment was awesome. Beautiful looking school, getting through the gates were a pain when they only had one of the two doors at gate five.
The tickets were quick and easy. Printing them then and there was very convenient. The seating was amazing and the price too. You can't beat 30-40 yard line tickets!
Good game. SMU knew it was going to be a sell out. They only had one employee scanning tickets at each gate and had multiple gates closed. I missed the first few minutes due to this.
Good game & good seats. Been every year & not disappointed.
Seats were on the 50 yard line and quite good. Did not mind being surrounded by Mustang fans, HOWEVER.............was appalled at the obnoxious rudeness of cheering section yelling during the TCU alma mater and irritated at the loud music from the large TV screen which had nothing to do with football and unnecessary during the game. Whatever happened to "good ole college bands" playing? Also, found the announcer quite biased (but since that's his home turf, guess it should be expected). Other than these, it was a great experience and SMU played extremely well. A good game!
SMU needs to upgrade their Hot Dogs! 4 bucks no mustard or Mayo provided! Game was competitive!
The Mustangs played the Frogs tightly through more of the game than I expected -- into the fourth quarter. Ultimately the Frogs' depth and stamina won out, but the Mustangs were up for the game and exposed some of the Frogs' weaknesses.
I had to wait in line for 30 minutes to pickup my tickets at Will Call window then I had to wait another 20 minutes to be screened to get to the gate. People were in wrong seats, there were no ushers or folks to help with seating. It was uncomfortable and chaotic. SMU is not ready to host a full stadium. They should have been prepared.
Great game! Only suggestion to SMU managment: When you know you have a sell out crowd, hire more ticket takers and have every gate open so that folks are not left outside when the game begins.
Excellent seats, 50 yard line on the vistor's side - TCU. My grandparents bought the tickets for my 10th birthday, just for me and my dad. I hope they can get them again in two years or next year for the game in Fort Worth. Go frogs!
I cant believe we (the mustangs) lost again!!! when are we ever going to be beat those horned frogs??? everytime I got excited for a touchdown, the other team got two touchdowns. in other words, their score was almost double: 42 - 24
Enjoyed the game and the setting of SMU. Televised screen is excellent and game supported by both playing schools.
