About

Southern Methodist Mustangs at Gerald J. Ford Stadium

The Dallas suburb of University Park, Texas, is home to a team with both historic successes to its name and high hopes for the future. The SMU Mustangs play at Gerald J. Ford Stadium, which opened in 2000 and seats 32,000. The stadium is not named after former President Gerald R. Ford, but for a local banker and SMU booster who donated $20 million toward the cost of building the stadium. They are coached by Daniel "Sonny" Dykes, who previously led Louisiana Tech and Cal to bowl appearances before taking over from Chad Morris after the 2017 season.

SMU Mustangs Football History

Southern Methodist University first fielded a varsity football team in 1915, only four years after the school was founded. The Mustangs soon became a force to be reckoned with in Texas college football and in the Southwest Conference, winning 10 conference championships before its disestablishment in 1995. Halfback Doak Walker won the Heisman Trophy for his hometown Mustangs in 1948, and is the namesake of the Doak Walker Trophy, which honors the nation's top college running back. SMU has claims to three national championships, in 1935, 1981 and 1982, and has been the home of such legendary players as Don Meredith, Raymond Berry, and the one-two backfield combo from the early ‘80s, Eric Dickerson and Craig James.

In 1987, the SMU football program was assessed with a "death penalty" for continued recruiting violations, which led to the cancellation of the 1987 and 1988 seasons. While former SMU great and NFL head coach Forrest Gregg did what he could in rebuilding the program from 1989 to 1990, the Mustangs would not have another winning season until 1996, or another bowl appearance until 2009 under June Jones. SMU eventually regained their foothold under Jones, followed by Morris and Dykes, and spent time in the Western Athletic Conference and Conference USA before joining the American Athletic Conference in 2013. In 2019, the SMU Mustangs came roaring back into the national spotlight, after a 6-0 start including a triple-overtime battle against Tulsa and a victory over archrival TCU in the Battle for the Iron Skillet — their first since 2011.

    Had to Leave Early

by LocalTechFan on 9/3/13Gerald J Ford Stadium - Dallas

The game was great and the atmosphere was electric. Tech fans filled at least half the seats in the stadium. The only disappointment was DART didn't adjust their schedule to match the game for trains going through the Mockingbird station. As a result, we like hundreds of other fans, had to leave before the end of the game to catch the last train. The university needs coordinate better with DART as more people take advantage of public transportation.

    seat did not exist

    by baa1 on 9/2/13Gerald J Ford Stadium - Dallas

I took my 9 year old son to the game and our seats did not exist. The game was sold out and there were no seats in section 213 Row 16 seats 1 thru 6. The first seat on the aisle was seat #7and our tickets were for seats 1 & 2. There were no seats 1 & 2 so we stood the entire game and my son could not see the game. Parking was also horrible.

Good seat given that it was one of the last single seats available (before the game became a sell out)

    Good game, low level crowd.

by Anonymous on 9/2/13Gerald J Ford Stadium - Dallas

I'm a Pony fan, but primarily a Razorback, so my experiences at D1 football games many. I really enjoy Ford Stadium as every seat is great. The only problem is that most of the people there really don't compare to my home stadium in Fayetteville. It's college football people. On your feet! Scream! Back up the Ponies!

Concessions were run poorly and seats were too crammed in together. Game was great and getting into the stadium was easy.

    Great facility! Great pregame

by SFGUY35 on 6/13/13Gerald Ford Stadium - Dallas

The stadium is beautiful. It reminds me of going to games at Yale as a kid. The boulevard is fantastic. I wish they played a bit better! What a beautiful campus!!! They need better and healthier food!

Been To Gerald Ford a Couple of Times

by Lbbsport on 5/23/13Gerald Ford Stadium - Dallas

I am from the old SWC days and SMU moving the games back to campus to me was the best thing they ever did. The stadium is very nice for a mid major type school. Fans, what little there are as Tech and other BIG 12 schools take over the stadium, are not very engaged and are a bit cocky to have not had much success vs the big boys. There isn't a big college atmosphere as SMU is usually outnumbered by bigger schools and seem to be more interested in partying on the blvd than supporting their team. Many leave early and never come back. Will be at Jones AT&T stadium EAST with thousands of my red and black clad friends come Aug 30th, 2013 when Tech plays SMU. I am sure Tech will help make yet another "record" crowd for SMU.

    Great venue

by hayou on 10/3/12Gerald J Ford Stadium - Dallas

With the exception of the rain it was a lot of fun. The SMU stadium really doesn't have a bad seat in it. Seat backs were nice and plenty of leg room. It is a very nice intimate venue.

    Great game

    by texasblitze1 on 10/3/12Gerald J Ford Stadium - Dallas

This game had it all. Rain made it hard for players to hold onto the ball. SMU play like a top 25 team they stayed in the game and could have maybe won it if Gilbert could have found his wr more. TCU defense came up with big plays when they needed them. The bands for both teams where great. The cheerleaders for both teams weather the rain and keep cheering for their teams. This was college football at it best.

A football game at Gerald Ford....

by stickyw on 10/3/12Gerald J Ford Stadium - Dallas

...is equivalent to a mediocre HS football game experience. The fans seemingly do not care. After half the only people that remained in the stadium. This may be because all of their fans either stay on the Boulevard (tailgating) and never make it into the game, or leave during the 2nd quarter to get back. In a city as large as Dallas, and for a school that claims to be "Dallas' Team", this is flat-out pathetic. At least you can enjoy your school destroying their awful team. Cocky, yet unloyal fans. Overpriced concessions. WAY overpriced ticket.

    Water Water Everywhere

Rainy. Soaking wet. Drenched. They wouldn't post my review the first time because my text is too short so I am writing this sentence.

    Loved the rain

    by Rocket1969 on 10/2/12Gerald J Ford Stadium - Dallas

Easy to buy the tickets. My Ponies didn't like the rain. Only thing I'd change is to give best available buyers options: four seats on row 20 section 107 or row 25 section 209.

    Aggies dominate smu

    by Teddyballgame214 on 9/17/12Gerald J Ford Stadium - Dallas

Nice gameday atmosphere at SMU, but their fans don't carry the pregame excitement to the stadium. Gig 'Em Aggies!

    SMU Football

by mojonoao on 11/28/11Gerald J Ford Stadium - Dallas

Good deal in the DFW area, if you want to see some decent NCAA football at a good price. Tickets are usually inexpensive and there is the free shuttle parking also.

SMU versus Rice was a great experience!

    by Tequi17 on 11/28/11Gerald J Ford Stadium - Dallas

The 2011 SMU-Rice football game was a fun time. The campus is lovely, the people friendly and helpful, and the stadium is small and intimate, giving you the feel you are very close to the happenings of the game. Great place to see a college football game.

    go Mustangs!

    by smu97 on 11/7/11Gerald J Ford Stadium - Dallas

Beautiful day... nice win... but I'll never sit in the family section again! Too many kids running around... We moved to the other side of the stadium for the second half.

    SMU Mustangs are back

    by Ponyup12 on 11/7/11Gerald J Ford Stadium - Dallas

Love SMU football. You can see great from anywhere you sit, and the team plays remarkably. More people should come to these games. You don't know what you're missing!
