About

Smokey Robinson isn't just the former frontman of the Miracles, or the man behind several dozen R&B classics, or one of the key figures in the initial Motown movement. He isn’t just a National Medal of Arts award winner and an inductee in both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriter's Hall of Fame. Robinson is additionally a fantastic live musician and still a great performer, with an energy and enthusiasm that is incredible given his nearly six decades of experience in the music industry. These days, his concerts are celebratory affairs, with multiple generations of fans coming together to enjoy one of the true legends of American R&B. In epic performances that often last over two hours, Robinson sings hits from his entire career, dating back to early Miracles hits like “I Second That Emotion,” right through to newer tracks like "Don't Know Why" and "Love Bath," off his most recent album, 2009’s appropriately titled Time Flies When You're Having Fun.

From humble beginnings growing up poor in the north end of Detroit, Robinson first brought the Miracles together in 1955, at the age of just 15. Five years later, the group signed to Motown Records, and its first hit single, "Shop Around," became the young label’s first million-selling record. Another 25 hits followed for the band, including "Mickey's Monkey," "I Second That Emotion," "Baby Baby Don't Cry," and the No. 1 hit "Tears of a Clown." Robinson, then vice-president of Motown, started recording on his own, leading to hits like "A Quiet Storm," "Cruisin'," and "Just to See Her." His 2009 album Time Flies When You're Having Fun hit No. 10 on the R&B charts, and tickets continue to sell out for his concert tours, as fans await the opportunity to see this living legend.

    Smoken!

by Anjani on 7/16/09The Pacific Amphitheatre - Costa Mesa

Smokey's amazing. He did the whole show with no opening acts. His voice is sweet and powerful in the same moment. He's a smooth dancer. He really engaged the crowd. Just like a reggae show, everybody sang along with happy faces and happy voices. It was truly a night to remember forever. It brought me and everybody around me to tears, especially when he did Tears of a Clown. There was not one second of down time. Definitely a class act from beginning to end. If he comes around again, "I'll be there"

    INCREDIBLE! INCREDIBLE! INCREDIBLE!

by LilMary on 7/16/09The Pacific Amphitheatre - Costa Mesa

I'm a young girl and yet I know mostly all of Smokey's songs and the many songs he's written for other artists. His smile and energy are infectious! He knows how to work the crowd and get them really involved. He called people onto the stage and did a little competition. This is not just a sit down and listen to him the whole night type of concert. I knew that I would enjoy his performance but he exceeded my expectations. And....he's absolutely hilarious! The man was making the whole audience laugh. Just an overall amazing experience. I love me some Smokey!!!

What a fabulous concert! Smokey performs like he's still 29...with energy, flawless delivery, panache. With a wonderful combination of old and new music, the crowd was wowed from first note to last. I will definitely wait for him to return to Orange County for another special evening.

Smokey Was as Awesome as Ever

by MotownFan on 7/16/09The Pacific Amphitheatre - Costa Mesa

We've been going to see Smokey Robinson since the late 60's and his performances are always perfect. His voice and showmanship are as good as ever and we will attend his concert the next time he's in our area again. If you like Motown--you have to see there all-time brightest star and living legend in person before he stops doing concerts.

    Smokey Robinson

by KKristalblue on 7/16/09The Pacific Amphitheatre - Costa Mesa

I've always enjoyed Smokey Robinson. However, I've seen two concerts in the last few years. The shows seemed to no longer have "Soul". He sings the songs so "Commercial" now. Also, he has a long song list, that he doesn't have to sing other people's songs (e.g. 1950's standards). And there's so much talking throughout the show, especially the first half. Smokey, we came to hear you sing!

Smokey was good but lacked presence

by Pochi on 7/16/09The Pacific Amphitheatre - Costa Mesa

I enjoyed hearing all the great songs written and song by Smokey. I felt he lacked stage presence and it was not much of a show. Not very entertaining.

    Smokey.....Imprinted in my heart forever!

by bikogrey on 7/16/09The Pacific Amphitheatre - Costa Mesa

The Motown sound was heard in my home since the 60's. Smokey, being a member of the Motown family, was part of that great sound (along with the Miracles). Thoughout the years, that music is still heard in my home. It has a lasting pleasure effect that makes you feel good as soon as you hear it. You sing the words, you move and sway to the tempo of the tune, you smile and/or frown to the meaning of the song. It's all good. Well last night, Smokey took all that "good" and tatooed it in my heart forever. He made the night seem like it was all on a personal level. He knows he's been a part of your life for the past 50 years and you finally get to meet in person. And he gives you all his "best of" along with a taste of his new stuff (he mentioned he has a new album coming out in late August "Time Flies When You're Having Fun") and couple classic love songs from his "Timeless Love" album. If you get the opportunity to see him, don't let it slip away. Grab it and go. You won't regret it. Thanks Smokey - you are timeless!
