About

About Ragtime at Slow Burn Theatre Co.

Florida theatergoers are in for a treat. Fort Lauderdale’s Slow Burn Theatre Company presents the Tony Award-winning Ragtime at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts. Devoted to bringing the best of Broadway to the Sunshine State, the nonprofit regional theatre company shows off South Florida’s best talent to present one of the Great White Way’s most beloved musicals. Based on the E.L. Doctorow novel, Ragtime, the musical adaptation is nonstop fun and fervor, buoyed by the Tony-winning original score, which reflects America’s great melting pot: a little bit of ragtime rhythms here, some klezmer melodies there, plus plenty of brass and banjo blended into big, sweeping anthems. Written by composer Stephen Flaherty, lyricist Lynn Ahrens and playwright Terrence McNally, Ragtime earned critical acclaim - especially for its impressive production, including fireworks and a working Ford Model T automobile - when it debuted on Broadway in 1998. Along with winning Best Original Score, it also took home the Tony Award for Best Book of a Musical. Slow Burn Theatre Co., which was founded in 2009 by Patrick Fitzwater and Matthew Korinko, offers a production with a slightly smaller budget, but a huge amount of local talent. Moving their way up from hosting shows at West Boca High School, the Carbonell Award-winning company now presents its work at the Amaturo Theater, a part of the prestigious Broward Center for the Performing Arts. Slow Burn is committed to providing sensory-friendly performances for attendees with autism or other disabilities.

About Ragtime The Broadway Musical

When it opened in 1998 on Broadway, Ragtime was declared “the best musical in 20 years” by the International Herald Tribune. The production, set in early 20th century New York, dissects the American Dream and what it truly means to be an American. It centers on three main characters who represent three very different communities: young Harlem pianist Coalhouse Walker Jr., upper-class suburban wife Mother, and fresh new Jewish immigrant Tateh. Their stories weave together with the help of an array of historical luminaries, including Henry Ford, Harry Houdini, Booker T. Washington, J.P. Morgan and Emma Goldman. It’s an entertaining history lesson, cultural experience and musical extravaganza all in one. Slow Burn Theatre Co. invites theatergoers of all ages to join in on the fun.
