I've been to ballets in small towns before. Heck, I've been to the ballet in Fairbanks, Alaska where there is no "real" ballet company. I've been to fancy ballets in Atlanta, Georgia. Never, in all my life have I ever seen a ballet where the story had to be narrated it was so bad.
Instead we were told what the story was and the dance was more like, "... and I can do this... and this... and watch me do this... and see how good I am at this... and ..." The lead was wobbly and had trouble balancing and there was even one dancer who didn't look like she was wearing a bra. She was jiggling all over the place and was completely inappropriate.
The shock and disappointment of the whole thing is really saddening. My daughter, my son-in-law, and my husband all agreed that this was more like a dance recital than a real ballet. How very unfair that we spent $15 when it was worth much less.
I'm sorry to be so brutal in my review, but I don't know how else to say it. I am full aware that I am no dancer and I would obviously do much worse, but then again, I'm not getting paid to dance (or direct) either. In truth the dancing wasn't horrible, if not just undeniably inexperienced, but the direction was the worst I have ever encountered in all my life and believe me when I say, I have seen some in the boonies.
I will never again drive all the way to Pensacola for a ballet of any kind whatsoever.
