SLASH featuring Myles Kennedy & the Conspirators on Tour

“I think it’s time to set this world on fire/I think it’s time to push it to the edge/I’m so f---in’ bored so trip the wire/It may never be this good again”

--From the opening power chords of the single and title track of WORLD ON FIRE

WORLD ON FIRE is the new album from SLASH featuring Myles Kennedy & the Conspirators, and it comes on full throttle and in-your-face, a hunk of burning rock ‘n’ roll that takes no prisoners. Intensifying the band’s sound and vision, it marks the follow-up to their succesful and acclaimed 2012 debut, Apocalyptic Love, also released on SLASH’s own indie Dik Hayd International label distributed through Caroline.

“We’ve been playing together for awhile and I think it’s gotten to the point where everybody’s comfortable in our own skins,” says Rock and Roll Hall of Fame guitarist SLASH, who has amassed album sales of over 100 million copies, with seven GRAMMY nominations, a GRAMMY award and countless accolades. “It turned out to be a very easy process. We definitely had chemistry from the very first time we entered a room together. It was instantaneous magic.”

WORLD ON FIRE represents that chemistry, as SLASH, vocalist MYLES KENNEDY, bassist TODD KERNS and drummer BRENT FITZ blaze through 17 songs that run the gamut of topics, some derived from tour bus conversations between the singer and guitarist. These range from the pointed sexual politics of “Battleground,” “Dirty Girl” and “Stone Blind,” the anti-war sentiments of “Dissident” and the coming-of-age saga “Bent to Fly,” to such charged issues as elephant poaching (“Beneath the Savage Sun”), child abuse in the Catholic Church (“The Unholy”), addiction (“Wicked Stone”) and the perils faced by females of a certain age in show business (“Withered Delilah”). There’s also a song inspired by Mad Men’s Don Draper (“Shadow Life”) and a rockin’ instrumental (“Safari Inn”).

“There are lots of different stories and themes on this album,” says KENNEDY, the vocalist for Alter Bridge who first played on SLASH’s self-titled 2010 debut solo release, and became an instant fit. “When SLASH sends me a chord progression or a riff, it’s like hearing music to a film. Ultimately, I am writing the script for the composition with lyrics and melodies inspired by what he sends me musically. I do my best to keep the story congruent with the mood of the track."

Unlike Apocalyptic Love, which was essentially recorded live in the studio, WORLD ON FIRE began with jamming by SLASH, KERNS and FITZ, who sent the results to KENNEDY. Produced by Mike “Elvis” Baskette (Alter Bridge, Falling in Reverse, Incubus, Iggy Pop, Chevelle) in his Orlando-based Studio Barbarossa and at L.A.’s NRG Studios, WORLD ON FIRE finds SLASH playing all the guitars this time around.

Make no mistake about it, though. This is no solo project, but a rock ‘n’ roll band, with all four members contributing their strengths to the whole.

“I was influenced by the group ethic as a kid coming up,” admits SLASH. “I would buy live records because that was the energy I craved. As soon as I picked up a guitar in junior high school, I started a band. That’s the vibe I’m looking for, the interaction between musicians. Having a singer whom I know where he’s at, and writing with him in mind, my songwriting skills have gotten a lot better.”

Those arrangements range from the acoustic strumming and “la la la” chorus of “Battleground” and the epic build of “Bent to Fly” to the distinctive SLASH guitar riff which opens “Iris of the Storm,” the wide-screen scope of “The Unholy,” with its sounds of children in the playground, and the jungle boogie instrumental of “Safari Inn.”

“I’ve learned a great deal through the whole process,” says KENNEDY, who splits his time between The Conspirators and Alter Bridge. ““Everybody’s on the same page and we’re all very proud of what we’ve done as a band on this record. There's a great chemistry between the 4 of us that continues to evolve with each recording.”

WORLD ON FIRE comes on the heels of the success of Apocalyptic Love, which debuted at #4 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart and produced SLASH’s first-ever No. 1 U.S. Rock radio solo hits in “You’re a Lie” and “Standing in the Sun.” With the release of Nothing Left to Fear last year--SLASH’s initial foray into horror pictures, co-produced by his Slasher Films--he began to broaden his horizons, a development which could be heard on WORLD ON FIRE, particularly on the very cinematic set-piece, “The Unholy.”

“That comes from an entirely different side of my brain,” SLASH admits. “I never usually write like that for a band, but I thought it would be pretty cool.”

KENNEDY, who comes from a Christian Scientist and Methodist background, based the song on what he was hearing from Catholic friends. “It’s not as silent as it once was,” he says of the institutionalized child abuse he tackles in the lyrics. “It’s really sad and heartbreaking because these are people you look up to, clergymen, who betray that trust.”

The lyrics of “Shadow Life” come from Kennedy’s fascination with the TV show “Mad Men” and the duplicity of its main character Don Draper. “That character fascinates me because the dark secrets he keeps, as well as the double life he leads, ultimately make his existence more complex and difficult."

“The Dissident” is about a soldier who comes to the realization that he no longer believes in what he is fighting for, while “Withered Delilah” gets inside how the entertainment industry can chew up and spit out women when they no longer have a use for them.

“This is basically a happy record with some dark subject matter,” acknowledges SLASH. “It ends up in a positive place, but it also leaves you with the idea not to get too comfortable.”

For SLASH featuring Myles Kennedy and The Conspirators, there is no time for that, as the band will intersperse their own headlining dates by appearing with Aerosmith on the celebrated “Let Rock Rule” tour in North America this summer, a jaunt they previewed with a surprise performance at the Whisky a Go Go earlier this spring.

“I’m really excited about it,” says SLASH. “There are not really too many bands I can feel comfortable partnering up with. When I first picked up the guitar, they were a huge influence my favorite band at the time, bar none. The Rocks album was a catalyst for me to pursue what it is I do now. Guns N’ Roses toured with them in the ‘80s. They always represented a certain kind of attitude, brashness and realism in rock ‘n’ roll I still to this day subscribe to.  We fit together really well.”

  • Slash has still got "it"

    by eth01971 on 9/7/10Ogden Theatre - DenverRating: 4 out of 5

I must say my expectations were pretty low when I first heard of this tour, but as I started to hear more and more good reviews I decided to check it out. Simply put, they were fantastic! I have seen Slash a few times with GnR and Velvet Revolver, and I can honestly say that this was the best I've seen him perform. He just seemed more "in the moment" (or whatever) than other times I've seen him. Myles Kennedy...unbelievable! The vocal range on that guy is superb -- although he messed up the lyrics on "Sweet Child o' Mine", if you closed your eyes you'd swear it was Axl Rose (circa 20 years ago). Support band was "good". They did everything they were supposed to do. Taking Dawn was enjoyable as well. Having heard their album, I didn't think much of them, but they translated quite well to the stage. Overall: Awesome show. Well worth the price of admission!

Slash is an amazing musician and every song was awesome on this night. Unfortunately, the venue is totally uncool.

  • Highly entertaining, and some surprises

    by Slowhead23 on 9/7/10Ogden Theatre - DenverRating: 4 out of 5

OK, I'm older school, grew up in the 60s, and so I wasn't into the Guns N' Roses thing, or even Slash's later stuff. But in the last couple years, he snuck into my consciousness, partly because of his autobiography, partly because I always catch up on all music eventually. So, my concerts this year so far were Crosby, Stills, & Nash -- and Slash! Turned out to be a great combination. Slash is a great performer, energized, unique, creative. He has a very interesting style on his extended solos, with his Les Paul held vertically, supported on his leg, which gives him the ability to do some very fast picking & licks with a very different hand posture than most other players. His singer (who I'd not heard before), Myles Kennedy, was a terrific rock singer, with the first few numbers in a lower register, and as he got rolling, soaring into places that few singers can effectively go, and without the rough delivery of a Hagar or that type. Very smooth, great stage movement and gestures, I'm a new fan of Mr. Kennedy now, also. Everyone shared the stage very nicely, no one stole the fact that it was Slash's show, but all contributed fully to the effect. Very good show, we're glad we went. One of the best moments was when Slash kicked into the "Godfather Theme", beautiful rendition, and it's good to hear that he can play long slow passionate licks, alongside his hot superfast stuff. It was louder than it needed to be, the beauty of the singing & some of the playing would have been better without it having to shred the ears (of which I don't have that much left!), but it was a good one. The opening act (Taking Dawn) was too formulaic, and though they could play their instruments well, their mix was not clean, there were no dynamics, and they were trying to force the audience to have fun rather than, like Slash's band, to rip and roll and let the audience take off on their own accord because of the good stuff on stage.

  • SLASH!!!!

by Axeman72 on 9/6/10VooDoo Lounge at Harrah's Casino North Kansas City - North Kansas CityRating: 5 out of 5

Great Venue! Great Sound! SLASH and BAND were awesome! They played like a real band and not a "back up" band for Slash. The show started on time and the band ROCKED for two solid hours. Myles Kennedy sounded incredible on every song and Slash made the guitar talk, sing, and scream! Bottom Line: Best Rock show I've seen! (I saw Guns back in the day - UYI tour, I'd rather see this band)

  • Loved Slash!!!

by lamzie on 9/5/10VooDoo Lounge at Harrah's Casino North Kansas City - North Kansas CityRating: 4 out of 5

Have always loved Slash! Singer is ok too! lol Had a blast! Love the VooDoo Lounge!! And the drinks were definitely not skimped on! It was nice to not feel trampled over, since I'm only 5'2". lol I will definitely be watching for more at the VooDoo Lounge.

  • Best Rock Show Ever...PERIOD!

Truly a special evening. If you have the chance to see them DO NOT HESITATE!!!

  • Slash and Myles were great!

    by SoldierSide77 on 9/4/10Ogden Theatre - DenverRating: 4 out of 5

Great show! They played about 20 or so songs, a good mix of Slash's solo stuff, G n R songs, Velvet Revolver songs, a couple Snakepit songs, one Alter Bridge song and covered Communication Breakdown by Led Zep. They played one song that they said they hadn't done live before, Do it for the Kids by Velvet Revolver. I have watched some videos in the past of Myles and Slash doing Guns material and I've said that I didn't think Myles sounds all that great emulating Axl, but I think he did a really great job at this show. He sounded pretty damn good on almost every song. I think he honestly sounded better on the Guns stuff than the VR material. My favorites were Back from Cali, Rise Today, Communication Breakdown, By the Sword and Paradise City. Meeting Slash, Myles, and the whole band after the show and getting my stuff signed was awesome!. What a great bunch of guys! I was thrilled when Myles told me Alter Bridge's new CD drops in about 2 months. Finally!! Then AB goes on tour in Europe for a few months, then Myles rejoins Slash for the Ozzy tour in 2011. NIce!!

  • SLASH BLEW THE ROOF OFF!

THIS WAS ONE OF THE MOST ENERGETIC AND ELECTIFYING SHOWS WE'VE EVER SEEN. SLASH JUST BLEW US AWAY! THE GUYS WITH HIM WERE TIGHT AND RIPPIN IT. MILES KENNEDY ON VOCALES WAS AMAZING! IT WAS AWSUME TO HEAR GNR SONGS LIVE! NIGHTTRAIN, SWEET CHILD O MINE, ENDING WITH PARADISE CITY....COOL!

  • Slash and Miles were amazing!

by cakes3 on 9/4/10VooDoo Lounge at Harrah's Casino North Kansas City - North Kansas CityRating: 5 out of 5

Slash put on an AMAZING show at the VooDoo Lounge in K.C.! He proved that he is the best rock and roll guitar player of all time. Miles did an excellent job on vocals as well as the rest of the band. Taking Dawn was great too. (They stuck around and signed CDs after the show and were really nice guys!). The live CD is an awesome souvenir to take home! Excellent night!

this is one of, if not the best show I have seen at the voodoo lounge. This is one of the best venues out there to see any band and slash and friends did not let me down. If you missed it, you missed out big!

  • Axl who?

by BirdmanofVegas on 9/4/10VooDoo Lounge at Harrah's Casino North Kansas City - North Kansas CityRating: 5 out of 5

Slash brought it to KC. Myles Kennedy has an amazing voice, not only can he pull of the new songs, but he did the old GN'R song justice. During some of the songs members of the crowd were yelling Axl who? The show had a lot of energy. Talking with others in the crowd not one person i talked to was disappointed. And the added bonus was you could by a cd after the show of the concert, although a bit expensive a nice memory of the show. Taking Dawn opened the show. Great band with a lot of energy.

  • Slash - not necessarily what you might expect

by TheBeerLady on 9/4/10VooDoo Lounge at Harrah's Casino North Kansas City - North Kansas CityRating: 5 out of 5

If you showed up to see Slash expecting to see a great guitarist, that's understandable. That's the man's rep, after all. But maybe it's time to change your expectations. Slash isn't the skinny kid that wowed everyone with Guns N Roses. As hard as it may be to believe, he's much, much better. The band does material from Alterbridge, the Slash solo album, and of course, some GNR classics, and manages to make all of them sound like the group has *always* been singing them. Myles Kennedy is probably the perfect choice of front man for the show. He's got a great vocal range and handles the GNR tunes beautifully without sounding like he's trying to do an Axl Rose impression. The production is great, and the smaller venues are the perfect showcase. Here's a hint - when they offer you the chance to order a double CD of the show, take it. You won't regret having a copy.

  • Slash was AWESOME~!!!

by Pras on 9/4/10VooDoo Lounge at Harrah's Casino North Kansas City - North Kansas CityRating: 5 out of 5

Wow!!! All the really good tracks including his New Album... Guns n Roses... Velvet Revolver... And the most unforgettable 'God Father' theme....

  • OH MY GOD!!!

by MotherOfPearl on 9/4/10VooDoo Lounge at Harrah's Casino North Kansas City - North Kansas CityRating: 5 out of 5

And I mean that title literally. I've been listening to Slash playing since I was nine years old, and seeing him live was a dream come true. And what a dream that was... The setlist is comprised of some GNR hits, a couple Velvet Revolver songs, a couple Snakepit songs and some songs from his new solo record. Every song hit home and hit it hard. The rest of the band doesn't fall behind either, and Myles Kennedy is a decent singer and an amazing frontman. Even the opening act was good. Not that their music was anything to write home about, but they give a blasting show. Glam Rock is back, my friends, and it's here to stay, thank God. PS - a helpful tip: the band doesn't allow cameras, but they don't mind phone pics.

  • Best. Concert. Ever.

by LadyRockFan on 9/4/10VooDoo Lounge at Harrah's Casino North Kansas City - North Kansas CityRating: 5 out of 5

VooDoo Lounge was a perfect venue for Slash to be comfortably in our face all night. They did Gn'R songs, VR songs, Snakepit songs, and songs from the recent Slash solo album. The energy was amazing, and watching him perform was unbelievable! I'd go again today. And tomorrow.

  • Slash the legend

by McNuge on 9/4/10VooDoo Lounge at Harrah's Casino North Kansas City - North Kansas CityRating: 5 out of 5

I was a bit concerned paying 50 dollars to see Slash solo, and even more concerned when i found out Myles Kennedy would be singing all vocals. Well, I was completely blown away. Slash was on fire, Guns n Roses, Velvet Revolver, his solo album, all sounded CD exact. As for Myles Kennedy's "stage presence", that i could do without. I kept trying to forget that he was the lead singer of Alter Bridge but just as i did he would do a cheezy action that would ruin it. A lot of surprise song selections, Rocket Queen!!?? That's only the best GNR song ever! Bottom line, if you got the cash, DO IT, Slash is king

  • Slash with Myles Kennedy...WOW!

by DaCritic on 9/4/10VooDoo Lounge at Harrah's Casino North Kansas City - North Kansas CityRating: 5 out of 5

Do not miss this show! I was never one of those ready to crown Slash with god-like guitar skills but I was proven wrong BIG TIME with this show. Slash could always create that great, catchy riff but now he can shred with the best of them. On top of that, Myles Kennedy is the best live vocalist I've seen...better than Bruce Dickinson, Steve Perry, Axl Rose, and yes, even Robert Plant. No wonder everyone wants this guy to sing for them. No one else could pull off the soulful baritone of Ian Astbury on Ghost and follow up by nailing every falsetto shriek on Rocket Queen. This guy is the real deal! While I would love to see another Alter Bridge album or another Slash record with Myles as the only vocalist, I fully expect to see nothing but solo work from him over the next few years. Most likely, this pairing will never be seen again...don't miss it!
