SLASH featuring Myles Kennedy & the Conspirators on Tour

“I think it’s time to set this world on fire/I think it’s time to push it to the edge/I’m so f---in’ bored so trip the wire/It may never be this good again”

--From the opening power chords of the single and title track of WORLD ON FIRE

WORLD ON FIRE is the new album from SLASH featuring Myles Kennedy & the Conspirators, and it comes on full throttle and in-your-face, a hunk of burning rock ‘n’ roll that takes no prisoners. Intensifying the band’s sound and vision, it marks the follow-up to their succesful and acclaimed 2012 debut, Apocalyptic Love, also released on SLASH’s own indie Dik Hayd International label distributed through Caroline.

“We’ve been playing together for awhile and I think it’s gotten to the point where everybody’s comfortable in our own skins,” says Rock and Roll Hall of Fame guitarist SLASH, who has amassed album sales of over 100 million copies, with seven GRAMMY nominations, a GRAMMY award and countless accolades. “It turned out to be a very easy process. We definitely had chemistry from the very first time we entered a room together. It was instantaneous magic.”

WORLD ON FIRE represents that chemistry, as SLASH, vocalist MYLES KENNEDY, bassist TODD KERNS and drummer BRENT FITZ blaze through 17 songs that run the gamut of topics, some derived from tour bus conversations between the singer and guitarist. These range from the pointed sexual politics of “Battleground,” “Dirty Girl” and “Stone Blind,” the anti-war sentiments of “Dissident” and the coming-of-age saga “Bent to Fly,” to such charged issues as elephant poaching (“Beneath the Savage Sun”), child abuse in the Catholic Church (“The Unholy”), addiction (“Wicked Stone”) and the perils faced by females of a certain age in show business (“Withered Delilah”). There’s also a song inspired by Mad Men’s Don Draper (“Shadow Life”) and a rockin’ instrumental (“Safari Inn”).

“There are lots of different stories and themes on this album,” says KENNEDY, the vocalist for Alter Bridge who first played on SLASH’s self-titled 2010 debut solo release, and became an instant fit. “When SLASH sends me a chord progression or a riff, it’s like hearing music to a film. Ultimately, I am writing the script for the composition with lyrics and melodies inspired by what he sends me musically. I do my best to keep the story congruent with the mood of the track."

Unlike Apocalyptic Love, which was essentially recorded live in the studio, WORLD ON FIRE began with jamming by SLASH, KERNS and FITZ, who sent the results to KENNEDY. Produced by Mike “Elvis” Baskette (Alter Bridge, Falling in Reverse, Incubus, Iggy Pop, Chevelle) in his Orlando-based Studio Barbarossa and at L.A.’s NRG Studios, WORLD ON FIRE finds SLASH playing all the guitars this time around.

Make no mistake about it, though. This is no solo project, but a rock ‘n’ roll band, with all four members contributing their strengths to the whole.

“I was influenced by the group ethic as a kid coming up,” admits SLASH. “I would buy live records because that was the energy I craved. As soon as I picked up a guitar in junior high school, I started a band. That’s the vibe I’m looking for, the interaction between musicians. Having a singer whom I know where he’s at, and writing with him in mind, my songwriting skills have gotten a lot better.”

Those arrangements range from the acoustic strumming and “la la la” chorus of “Battleground” and the epic build of “Bent to Fly” to the distinctive SLASH guitar riff which opens “Iris of the Storm,” the wide-screen scope of “The Unholy,” with its sounds of children in the playground, and the jungle boogie instrumental of “Safari Inn.”

“I’ve learned a great deal through the whole process,” says KENNEDY, who splits his time between The Conspirators and Alter Bridge. ““Everybody’s on the same page and we’re all very proud of what we’ve done as a band on this record. There's a great chemistry between the 4 of us that continues to evolve with each recording.”

WORLD ON FIRE comes on the heels of the success of Apocalyptic Love, which debuted at #4 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart and produced SLASH’s first-ever No. 1 U.S. Rock radio solo hits in “You’re a Lie” and “Standing in the Sun.” With the release of Nothing Left to Fear last year--SLASH’s initial foray into horror pictures, co-produced by his Slasher Films--he began to broaden his horizons, a development which could be heard on WORLD ON FIRE, particularly on the very cinematic set-piece, “The Unholy.”

“That comes from an entirely different side of my brain,” SLASH admits. “I never usually write like that for a band, but I thought it would be pretty cool.”

KENNEDY, who comes from a Christian Scientist and Methodist background, based the song on what he was hearing from Catholic friends. “It’s not as silent as it once was,” he says of the institutionalized child abuse he tackles in the lyrics. “It’s really sad and heartbreaking because these are people you look up to, clergymen, who betray that trust.”

The lyrics of “Shadow Life” come from Kennedy’s fascination with the TV show “Mad Men” and the duplicity of its main character Don Draper. “That character fascinates me because the dark secrets he keeps, as well as the double life he leads, ultimately make his existence more complex and difficult."

“The Dissident” is about a soldier who comes to the realization that he no longer believes in what he is fighting for, while “Withered Delilah” gets inside how the entertainment industry can chew up and spit out women when they no longer have a use for them.

“This is basically a happy record with some dark subject matter,” acknowledges SLASH. “It ends up in a positive place, but it also leaves you with the idea not to get too comfortable.”

For SLASH featuring Myles Kennedy and The Conspirators, there is no time for that, as the band will intersperse their own headlining dates by appearing with Aerosmith on the celebrated “Let Rock Rule” tour in North America this summer, a jaunt they previewed with a surprise performance at the Whisky a Go Go earlier this spring.

“I’m really excited about it,” says SLASH. “There are not really too many bands I can feel comfortable partnering up with. When I first picked up the guitar, they were a huge influence my favorite band at the time, bar none. The Rocks album was a catalyst for me to pursue what it is I do now. Guns N’ Roses toured with them in the ‘80s. They always represented a certain kind of attitude, brashness and realism in rock ‘n’ roll I still to this day subscribe to.  We fit together really well.”

Great concert. Slash is never a disappointment. Myles Kennedy is a great singer especially and the GNR songs, He has range just like Axl but the VR songs were not his best. I think Weiland is the only one for those. GO SEE SLASH

The show was amazing. Taddy Porter opened up and set the tone for the night - real rock and roll. TAB seemed to be on a bit too long but only because I was highly anticipating Slash. Neither Myles Kennedy or Slash missed a single note! Myles could reach all the notes Axl did on the Guns N Roses covers. Highly highly recommend...Slash is just a guitar god.

  • Slash show exceptional!

This was our first time going to House of Blues in Boston and we loved the venue! The Staff at HOB were all polite and professional - but also down to earth and very cool. Slash and the entire band surpassed our greatest expectations and we are long time fans. Miles was also amazing, really they all were. The chemistry was infectious and they really made every effort to reach out to the audience and keep everyone engaged. The opening bands were great as well. We especially enjoyed Taddy porter - very talented guys. The only critisism if any, was that the 2nd opening band, TAB the Band, seemed to play too long. They were good, but the set was too long in our opinion. The crowd seemed to loose steam midway through thier set - but again, just our opinion. Highly recommend to all.

  • Best Concert I've Ever Seen!

by xAlpha on 9/17/10House of Blues Boston - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

I can't say I'm surprised that Slash put on a great show. I think that's a given. He's full of energy, even after all this time and a pacemaker. Even with a pending divorce. My socks were thoroughly rocked. What I wasn't expecting was an awesome opening act. Taddy Porter kicked serious ass. Their bass player is totally crazy (and looks like Shaun White). Their songs rule, too. TAB the band was pretty good, too.

  • Best Damn Rock Concert

There is Nothing Better than seeing a Living Legend up close in personal. Terminal 5 is a great venue to Rock out in. Slash is simply amazing! High energy show from Slash and his band.

  • SLASH!!!!

    by nainamrof on 9/16/10Terminal 5 - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

SLASH!!! What can I say? He's the greatest... I've been waiting to see Slash in concert for years now and I finally could thanks to Terminal 5. I paid $30 for tickets and ended up literally in the front row of the mosh pit. I've paid $150 for tickets at Madison Garden that weren't that good. The whole event was well organized and it was a great time.

  • Concert blew my mind!!!!

  • Slash ft. Myles Kennedy in NYC was amazing!

    by Blackout928 on 9/16/10Terminal 5 - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

The opening band Taddy Porter were awesome. They really kicked off the show right with a sound compared to The Black Crowes and Led Zeppelin. However, I was not so impressed with TAB the Band. But when Slash and Myles Kennedy came out, the crowd erupted and they kicked off the 2 hour set with "Ghost" from Slash's solo album. Todd Kerns, the bassist/back-up vocalist, was also very impressive and sang "We're All Gonna Die" from Iggy Pop for the first time and they killed it. Myles sang every song incredibly, especially the Guns N' Roses tracks, which included "My Michelle" for the first time as well. Slash rocked the hell out of all of us with his incendiary solos and raw rock sound. The NYC show was very special and I will never forget it.

  • Slash was amazing

    by Ripto on 9/16/10Terminal 5 - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

Being born in the late 80's, I never had the chance to make it to a Guns N' Roses show. After I discovered GNR and Slash, I was hooked. Slash became my idol and I couldn't get enough. I never thought the day would come where I'd see him play some of the core GNR songs; I'd seen him a few times with Velvet Revolver and they'd play 1 or 2, but it was different. This concert was the best show I could have hoped for, it had songs from Guns N' Roses, Slash's Snakepit, Velvet Revolver, and his solo album. Terminal 5 in NYC was a great small venue where you can get up close and person, I happened to be about 3 rows from the front. Slash, Myles Kennedy, and the rest of the band (who are amazing by the way) rocked hard and it was awesome to see the energy they created in the crowd. I'll never forget this experience and I hope Slash keeps on rocking and stops by again.

  • Great experience!

Great concert; amazing singer (Myles Kennedy), terrific guitar performance (well, this was expected :), great atmosphere. The sound quality was superb. I almost got the ticket to see them again a few days later in Atlantic City. As great as guitar rock & roll live can go!

Perfect, but axl rose was missing... Duff, Izzy and Matt Sorum too.

He still has ALOT of energy and it shows in his performance.

  • Slash in NYC

    by DKyourDJ on 9/16/10Terminal 5 - New YorkRating: 4 out of 5

Slash looked healthy and played great. My only complaint was that he didn't stray from his own catalog during the encore. In past shows I've seen him blow the crowd's mind with a classic cover like Cheap Trick's "Surrender", Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here", Led Zeppelin's "Communication Breakdown", just to name a few. At the show in NYC they played GNR's "My Michelle" during the encore. It was apparently the first time on this tour that they sang that particular Guns song, and I will admit that Myles vocals on it were better than the rest of the GNR songs (he just can't quite do Axl), but my mind remained "un-blown". Oh well, next time. Other than that, great Rock n Roll evening.

  • Great show.!!!!

    by Danfro on 9/16/10Terminal 5 - New YorkRating: 4 out of 5

First saw gnr in 1987 on Long Island. Twenty three years later and Slash as usual was incredible. His band was really tight. Singer Myles Kennedy nailed all the gnr and vr songs. Great venue too!!!

  • good stuff

    by somehow on 9/16/10Terminal 5 - New YorkRating: 4 out of 5

good mix of tunes that covered all of slashes incarnations. some nice surprises for G&R fans. loved "the godfather" solo. only downside was that they mostly did note for note covers of the tunes as they where on the albums. that was a little of a let down. less rehearsal time i guess.
