Like the title said, this show was probably the best concert I’ve been to. I went opening night with incredibly high expectations. Silk Sonic exceeded those expectations. Not just Bruno and Anderson, the whole band. They showed up and showed out!
The venue was setting the mood as soon as you walked in, playing music from Stevie Wonder, EWF, Al Green, etc. People from all walks of life were there. Older folks, younger kids, black, white and brown…everyone was there and the anticipation in the venue was something everyone felt. No cell phones! We had to put them in these pouches that you couldn’t open. Honestly, I think it enhanced the concert experience.
Show was supposed to start at 900 pm, but they didn’t hit the stage until around 930, no big deal. Everyone was so excited, it didn’t matter.
Curtain started coming up and the band was in place. They opened with the intro from the album. People were dancing from the opening note and didn’t let up until the lights came up. I was one of those people. From the intro, they jumped into 777, which in all honesty, was a great call. None of us were sure how they were gonna do the set list, but they did it perfectly, going in and out of the album, while sprinkling in their own hits as solo artists.
Things worth noting:
1) the musicianship. Not just between Anderson and Bruno, but the entire band. The horns section was on point. The drummer and guitarist had their time to shine. Similar to the album, you can tell they handled this live show with the upmost care.
2) the level of respect these gentlemen have for the greats before them. If you listened closely, and you are a fan of old school funk, almost every intro to a Silk Sonic song was preceded by the opening measures of an actual old school song. I personally loved it. My favorite was hearing Bruno’s “That’s What I Like” over the instrumentals of Earth, Wind and Fire’s, “Can’t Hide Love.” Unlike the other songs where after the first few measures they’d go into the actual Silk Sonic song, this one was a perfect blend of Bruno and EWF.
3) the chemistry between Bruno and Anderson is undeniable. Plain and simple, these 2 men are performers. They know how to work the crowd and interact in such a way that it made the show feel organic, not phoned in. It was opening night, and usually you’re working out the kinks (Anderson mentioned this towards the beginning), but it looked like they had been doing this together for years.
Overall, I’d you’re a lover of a Silk Sonic, old school funk, and just having an overall great time, go see Silk Sonic. With everything going on in the world, it was nice to escape and have fun, dancing and singing with people that needed a break from the world too.
10/10 concert for me. Would go see them again in a heartbeat.
