To say I was jazzed to find out Shawn Phillips was still making music is a severe understatement. I had a smile on my face all day Saturday in anticipation. His mastery of the voice and guitar are still there despite the ripe old age of 67.
I fell in love with his music and songwriting in the mid 70's when I was in college. His five and a half octave range allowed him to hit the highest notes you can imagine with a lilt. And while his voice is now in the four+ octave range, he still has the power to shake your nerves with effortless ease. And the whispering interludes take your breath. And the guitar work!! Oh my! Stunning in its power, vibrant in its magnificent melodies and so well crafted and presented with at times with beautiful soft grace, at others with amazing imagination and still others with the unmistakable style that makes you FEEL his songs.
When I say feel his songs, this is what I mean. While I sat with my wife holding and squeezing her hand with every note to the many songs I knew by heart. She could feel my absolute joy at seeing the man with his music that so affected my youth. My smile hurt. The man sitting in front of me was in tears several times during the night. He obviously had an equal but very different emotional reaction to these same songs.
I knew it was going to be special when Shawn announced at the start of the concert that he was going to perform many songs he had not performed for thirty five years. That was the era that I loved as did the man sitting in front of me. We were comrades by the end of the evening. Shawn came out to chat with his fans, ending a perfect evening. I will definitely go to his website for future concerts and to update my collection.
