About

Shawn Colvin in Concert

Born in Vermilion, South Dakota and raised in part in Illinois and Ontario, Shawn Colvin was already a well-traveled and seasoned performer by the time she won her first GRAMMY Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album with her debut album, Steady On in 1989. She has been a mainstay of the contemporary folk music scene ever since, releasing eleven superlative albums and establishing herself as one of America’s greatest live performers. She triumphed at the 1998 GRAMMY Awards, winning both Record and Song of the Year for “Sunny Came Home.” Her inspiring and candid memoir, Diamond In The Rough, which chronicles her struggles with depression and eating disorders, was published to strong reviews in 2012. With the wit, lyricism, and empathy that have characterized Shawn’s performances and inspired audiences worldwide, Diamond in the Rough looks back over a rich lifetime of highs and lows with stunning insight and candor.

Shawn’s most recent solo endeavor, Uncovered (Fantasy Records, 2015), is the long-awaited follow up to fan-favorite Cover Girl. Uncovered's twelve tunes include masterful interpretations of songs by Bruce Springsteen, Paul Simon, Tom Waits, Stevie Wonder, Robbie Robertson and Graham Nash to name a few, but in their selection and delivery, they are pure Shawn Colvin.

In June 2016, Shawn Colvin and Steve Earle united to release, Colvin & Earle, their acclaimed self-titled duo album (Fantasy Records). Produced by Buddy Miller (Patty Griffin, Robert Plant, Lucinda Williams) the album features guitarist Richard Bennett (Neil Diamond, Mark Knopfler), drummer Fred Eltringham (Willie Nelson, Kacey Musgraves), and bassist Chris Wood (of Medeski Martin & Wood). Fueled by their longtime friendship, Colvin & Earle beautifully captures the pair’s extraordinary chemistry and is a true standout in careers already filled with pinnacles and masterpieces. The album received high praise from critics – NPR asserted that the duo “Elevated their collaboration to the level of top-flight album-making, bringing seemingly opposing impulses to the process.”

Shawn’s longtime career achievements were recognized when she was recently bestowed with the Lifetime Achievement Trailblazer Award at this year’s Americana Honors & Awards Show, held at Nashville’s famous Ryman Auditorium on September 21st, 2016. Presenting Colvin with this prestigious award was Bonnie Raitt. Of Shawn, Raitt said “She’s simply one of the best singers I’ve ever heard— and a truly gifted and deep songwriter and guitarist… She was groundbreaking when she emerged and continues to inspire me and the legions of fans and other singer/songwriters coming up in her wake”

    Great but too short!

by KKinATL on 6/14/10Cheekwood Botanical Garden and Museum of Art - Nashville

I've been a Shawn Colvin fan for over 20 years. I purchased her "Steady On" album back in 1988 and have been following her ever since. I traveled from Atlanta to Nashville to see her on this tour because she didn't appear to be getting any closer to Atlanta this trip. She put on a very good show, but it could have been a bit longer in my opinion. I was happy to see her but wished it had gone on for another hour!!!

    Shawn Colvin & Chihuly...amazing!!!

by WahooGrad on 6/11/10Cheekwood Botanical Garden and Museum of Art - Nashville

Shawn Colvin live is a real treat, but under the stars at Cheekwood...it just doesn't get better than that! Add the Chihuly exhibit was icing on the cake.

    An intimate affair

by sunroom on 6/11/10Cheekwood Botanical Garden and Museum of Art - Nashville

The atmosphere at the event was INCREDIBLE. It was very intimate. Shawn gave a wonderful and personalized performance. The attendance was low, it may not have been promoted well. Cheekwood Gardens is a FABULOUS venue. We had Chilhuly art lit up as a backdrop. AWESOME!!!

    Shawn Colvin Shines!

by jinpajewel on 5/27/10Uptown Theatre Napa - Napa

I have been a longtime fan of Shawn Colvin, so when I had the opportunity to see her at the Uptown Theatre in Napa I thought it would be a wonderful way to spend the evening, and a weekend away. Shawn has evolved into a lovely and mature performer. She plays guitar with a deceptively easy sureness and her singing is filled with passion and awareness, every note perfect and alive. She interacted with the audience in a comfortable and friendly manner, making everyone feel as if we were all gathered in a cozy living room for an evening of informal entertainment. The Uptown Theatre in Napa was a refreshing surprise! Downtown Napa is a mixture of older and quaint with hip and hew. Just before entering the theatre for the show there was an amazing double rainbow over the church steeple across the street from the theatre. It was amazing and beautiful, and a good omen predicting a wonderful show. I've grown more and more unwilling over the years, to see shows at the big venues, and so discovering this lovely renovated Art Deco style theatre in the heart of Downtown Napa in the midst of wine country will spur me to take time out every once in awhile to see a show and have a weekend away from my otherwise very busy life. I would highly recommend seeing Shawn Colvin wherever she might be performing and also heartily recommend seeing any show that might strike your fancy at the lovely Uptown Theatre in Napa. It was wonderful, and just what i needed!

    Show and Venue Fantastic

by musicloverjim on 5/24/10Uptown Theatre Napa - Napa

The Napa Uptown Theatre has just opened with a barrage of announced shows through the end of the year. I just saw Lisa Loeb open for the amazing Shawn Colvin. AWESOME !! This was only the second live show at the Uptown. The place has been totally renovated and beer and wine are served in the seating area. All shows are 21 and up. Lisa Loeb came out promptly at 8 PM and was a delight. She said this was her first show since her daughter was born six months ago and she was nervous. The crowd laughed and showed their appreciation for Lisa who sounded great and spent a lot of her time talking with the audience intersperced with songs. It seemed much of her set was impromtu with Lisa taking requests from the audience. Shawn Colvin was amazing Very polished ! Both artists played acoustic sets; just them and their guitars!. Great Show. Shawn did a three song encore for the delighted crowd. SEE HER LIVE!!

    I want my money back

by Karmalita on 5/24/10Uptown Theatre Napa - Napa

Well, it was half good at best.. Shawn Colvin was entertaining, however most of the songs tend to all sound the same. Listening to Lisa Loeb was the painful part. I didn't go to listen to kiddie camp songs, and I sure as hell didn't go to listen to someone ramble on and on about her self absorbed descriptions of a day in the life of restaurant seating and baby diapering in the middle of singing parts of songs of which she couldn't even remember the words! She was not funny and her time spent talking instead of singing was totally unprofessional. She also sounded hoarse and amateurish.

Didn't even make it to the second act....

by Roziebug on 5/24/10Uptown Theatre Napa - Napa

Unfortunately, I didn’t even make it to the second act to see Ms. Colvin, so it’s not completely fair that she will be getting the star rating. I’d originally bought tickets for myself and my friends on wanting to see Lisa Loeb; I’m not sure how the rest of the audience felt but I was sorely disappointed. I realize, as all humans are prone to, that she was ill or had a hoarse throat, but she wasn’t able to hit the high notes on her songs. She talked through most of her performance and even stopped on one of her songs and asked a person in the audience what her words were to the song. I was so disappointed by this point that I didn’t even stay for the second act – hopefully it was better.

Shawn Colvin was great but Lisa Loeb was terrible

by PDC16 on 5/23/10Uptown Theatre Napa - Napa

I've been a fan of Shawn Colvin for years and she was great. She played all my favorite songs and the acoustic format really showcased her guitar talent. Lisa Loeb was really awful. Talked too much, sang off key, couldn't hit the high notes. I won't go see her again. Show would have had a higher rating if not for L. Loeb.

    Loved Lisa and Shaun

by kajul on 5/23/10Uptown Theatre Napa - Napa

Both Lisa and Shaun were wonderful. We only wish that they had done a couple of songs together!! That was a missed opportunity since they have played on each others albums. We love the new theater and are planning to come back soon. Only negative was the computer screen at the sound board was really distracting.

    Shawn Colvin delivers!

by Debster22 on 5/23/10Uptown Theatre Napa - Napa

Lisa Loeb was funny and quirky...long winded at times. Overall, she is talented and I enjoyed her songs. Shawn Colvin captured my attention with her skillful guitar playing and her amazing voice! Refreshing to enjoy a live performance with the artist and her guitar, it was perfect!! The Uptown Theater is a beautiful venue! Comfortable seats and the sound quality is terrific! Not a bad seat in the house!

    great acoustics/great performer

by yetiyeti on 5/23/10Uptown Theatre Napa - Napa

Shawn was at her best - she sang each song with passion like it was the first time instead of the thousandth! The theatre was a great setting and the acoustics were amazing!

The acoustics at the renovated Uptown are incredible. Lisa Loeb is not only a delightful singer/song-writer, she's hilarious! Shawn Colvin continues to have a very pure voice and she is a strong performer - one of the best guitarists I've seen. Both musicians used acoustic guitars only and I think that made for a better concert in a small venue.

Not a big Shawn Colvin fan. I went to see Lisa and left after she performed. She was a little rusty from not singing in a while. Her voice was scratchy and she even forgot lines to a lot of her songs. But I'm a huge fan so it didn't bother me. I thought she was great.

    amazing show!

by SorayaR on 5/11/10Birchmere - Alexandria

Shawn Colvin is one of those performers that is better live then listening to their CD's. She shares funny stories and intimate moments that make you feel like you are sitting in her living room sharing this great experience. She also gave out autographs afterwards. Love her!

    Shawn Colvin

by MichaelScott on 5/10/10Birchmere - Alexandria

My wife and I have seen Shawn Colvin many, many times. She has never disappointed and Friday night was no exception. She was very playful with the audience, played many of her hits and also had some great cover tunes that delighted the crowd. If you have not seen Shawn Colvin at the Birchmere you have missed one of the truly great acts in an unforgettable venue.

    Best Solo Artist (bar none)

by JazzGuitarDon on 5/9/10Avalon Theatre - Easton

I drove 85 miles to see this concert. It was the sixth or seventh time I have seen Ms. Colvin perform, and I finally realized why I find her live performances so mesmerizing. As an audio engineer, guitarist and arranger, I find myself automatically dissecting and arranging music: what would improve the music here, what would I play there? At one point early in the concert, I consciously wondered what I would play to augment the performance if I were performing with her. I drew a blank, and again on the next song. Her solo performances are such a perfect duet between guitar and voice that any additions would actually subtract from the performance. No other artist silences my internal music dialogue.

    Great evening with Shawn Colvin

    by Lisa611 on 5/9/10Birchmere - Alexandria

Now, I've seen Shawn only a handful of times, and every time, she's been wonderful. But this evening - Friday, May 7th at the Birchmere in Alexandria, VA - she was the BEST I've ever seen and heard. And judging from what I overheard from other patrons, they felt the same. Shawn was relaxed onstage, chatted with the audience, made us laugh at her observations about her song writing, motherhood, family, performing, etc...and the songs she chose to sing represented sort of a "Best of Shawn Over the Years" collection. (I especially loved her cover of Neil Young's "Tell Me Why"). I saw her the following evening at the historic Avalon Theater in Easton, which was also a great venue and concert, but I'd have to say that the Friday night show was 5-star. Thanks Shawn!

Shawn Colvin at the Birchmere May 7, 2010

by JPDVA on 5/9/10Birchmere - Alexandria

Shawn Colvin is an absolutely fantastic performer, songwriter and guitarist. Her presence on stage is warm and engaging, and she pours her heart and soul into every song. With only her voice and guitar she fills the room will energy and emotion, and her lyrics are pure poetry. She is an artist who should have had far greater success than she has had. If you get a chance to see her perform, don't hesitate -- go!
