About

System of a Down founder Serj Tankian was born on August 21, 1967, in Beirut, Lebanon. He and his family immigrated to Los Angeles in 1975. He studied marketing at California State University and started his own software company before beginning his music career with the formation of System of a Down in 1995. In 1998, System of a Down signed on to Rick Rubin's American imprint, and over the following seven years released five well-received albums, the second of which, Toxicity, thrust them into the forefront of the metal community, garnered a Grammy nomination, and sold millions of copies. Tankian utilized his success to influence the political world he often commented on lyrically by co-founding a nonprofit organization called Axis of Justice with Rage Against the Machine and Audioslave guitarist Tom Morello. He remained active with System of a Down throughout the mid-2000s and also released a book of poetry, titled -Cool Gardens, before SOAD chose, in May 2006, to go on hiatus of an undetermined length. Tankian made use of this sabbatical to record his first solo album, Elect the Dead, which was released in fall 2007. Three years later, Tankian teamed up with the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra to release Elect the Dead Symphony, featuring songs from his solo debut backed by a live orchestra. Tankian's second solo album, Imperfect Harmonies, continued in the orchestral footsteps symphonically re-imagined debut. ~ Gregory McIntosh, Rovi

Serj always puts on an amazing show. His voice is better in person than recorded, which is quite a feat in this day and age. Nokia is the Perfect venue for an intimate show like this!

Weirdly mellow, for a Serj concert. It would have been a lot more exciting had it been with the rest of System of a Down, but I'm a huge Serj fan anyway and had a lot of fun singing along. I just wish the audience would have been a little more active.

by GinaDaniels on 5/2/11Wiltern Theatre - Los Angeles

I took my daughter and her boyfriend. We were front row. I have seen SOAD 6 times and when they broke up there was no doubt in my mind that Serj would continue with a GREAT following. Awesome, awesome show. Never disatisfied.

Serj Tankian backed by the ASO was FANTASTIC!!!

by StingrayLonnie on 7/28/10Chastain Park Amphitheatre ASO - Atlanta

It was such a great show. Serj Tankian has one of the most amazing voices, and being backed by the ASO instead of a rock band, you really got to hear the full range of his abilities. I am looking forward to picking up his CD and I would definitely go back to see him again, especially backed by the ASO. They were amazing, my son plays the viola in high school, and I know he would have just loved the performance.

    Serj Did Not Dissappoint!

by Anonymous on 7/18/10Chastain Park Amphitheatre ASO - Atlanta

What a concert! Serj plus the ASO was such a great match with each complimenting the other. I was surprised at the low turnout but enjoyed the elbow room. Vivid lightning display only added to the night's sense of drama.

    Serj Overpowered the Orchestra!

by Jereme on 7/14/10Chastain Park Amphitheatre ASO - Atlanta

This was my first time seeing either Serj or the ASO perform. I had high expectations, and Serj delivered. Amazing stage presence, great energy, and top-notch vocals. Serj is indeed a talented musician. The only thing that could be improved was the ASO. At times, they had trouble keeping up with the energy that Serj kept delivering. There were signs that Serj adjusted his performance for the orchestra (which I feel is necessary for any rock musician, since an orchestra is incapable of completely replacing a rock band, and vice-versa), but the ASO still seemed lacking in their output at points. I've been told that this can occur for orchestras that aren't used to performing as backup for a lead vocalist. Overall, though, it was a unique concert experience.

    Beautiful Experience

by ShawnL on 7/13/10Chastain Park Amphitheatre ASO - Atlanta

Serj gives me chills ! He's very intense and enjoyable artist. You can tell he really loves and feels his music. I can't compliment him enough....He was really down to earth. We drove down from WV on the day of the show and got there a bit late, but they were just beginning....it was raining and not many showed up, he had everyone move up as close as they could. Really nice surprise to be so close....Would love to see him again.

    Serj in Atlanta was amazing

by SerjRocks on 7/13/10chastain - atlanta

This was an amazing show with his strongest performance I have heard anywhere (see my video for a sample) He was very casual with crowd - open and interactive and even invited the crowd in the back to come down to the front. He recalled that this was the way it was in days gone by - orchestras were events held for the people and were very casual and full of energy between the perfromers and the crowd - this set the tone for the concert......simply incredibly show!!! Once in a lifetime!!!

    Incredible Evening!!

by wbishop12 on 7/11/10Chastain Park Amphitheatre ASO - Atlanta

The harrowing day began in Tampa as my daughter and I were bumped off three AirTran flights in a row! When we made it to Atlanta, it was 7:30 pm. Candace at Hertz gave us precise driving instructions to the Chastain Amphitheatre and we sped through downtown Atlanta like honking antelope! When we arrived at 8:15, I was deeply saddened when I heard music and thought that we had missed the opening song and then jumped for joy to learn that the music I heard was the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra alone. They were, in fact, their own opening act! Atlanta? Why did I think Serj was playing with the Auckland Symphony Orchestra? No matter! They sounded great, and ended their set strong. As we were escorted to our seats, I was struck by the simplicity of the Chastain. Completely outdoors, The Chastain was charming and the staff was genuinely courteous. This quaint amphitheatre seemed no match, however, for the gathering thunderheads! And sure enough, as Serj took the stage, the crowd erupted, and lightning spidered across the clouds above. I personally admire Serj's work because his feelings reflect mine as well, and his reading of Borders set this show off on the right path for a truly glorious night. Now, I have to admit, I was surprised at the sparcity of Tank-aholics. Once again, Serj shined. He beckoned to the loyal few, throw down your tickets and come forth. Symphonies were born to serve the people, he roared, eat and drink and be merry and fellowship with your general admission neighbor!! And with that, he himself erased the very borders of the Chastain! It was beautiful! A man that practices what he preaches!! Whether Floor or Box or Upper Level, all seats were equal. And the masses flocked with freedom to be closer to the Artist. My ten year old, however, was soon surrounded by towering fans. So, I invited her to try as many locations around the venue as she needed to find her new seat. The situation reminded me of Carlos Castaneda traversing Don Juan's porch. And from our new seats we laughed and danced and ate and listened to our favorite Messenger. And the atmosphere mellowed. The sprinkles of rain and cascades of lightning gave way after The Sky Is Over was played. The amphitheatre grew large and became the center of the universe. And the people cheered and shouted their affection for him. Serj has an amazing way of being comical, profound, charismatic, and professional all at the same time. Sometimes, he had to quiet the adoration, warning, you won't be able to hear these non-amplified instruments if you keep screaming so much. Which brings me to why I rate this show 4 stars and not 5. I felt the ASO was a little weak at times. They proved they could bring the thunder in the opening set, but seemed to be holding back a little during the main show. With that said, know that this show was the one to see if you are a fan. It was personal. It was inspiring. It was FUN!! Bravo Serj!!!

    Great perfomance

by hanssolo on 7/11/10Chastain Park Amphitheatre ASO - Atlanta

It was a great evening with Serj Tankian and the ASO. Both did a great job. Only the acoustic could have been a little bit better. And 2-3 more songs wouldn't have hurt. I can only recommend this show!

by nimmzee on 7/11/10Chastain Park Amphitheatre ASO - Atlanta

We wanted to be closer but were really just happy to be there, then when he came out he told everyone to get out of the seats and move up! i was thrilled, then he started singing with this incredible powerful orchestra behind him and my boyfriend and i were deeply moved by his voice and his message and just the passion he put out on the stage. it was storming and we were outside but we didnt hardly notice and the crazy lightning was a beautiful addition to the energy on stage. i wish i could see it all again.
