About

Biography by Steve Huey

Dancehall superstar Sean Paul began scoring hit singles in Jamaica starting in 1996 and thereafter steadily began attracting international attention, eventual breaking into the pop mainstream in 2002 with Dutty Rock. Born Sean Paul Henriques on January 8, 1973, the multi-ethnic Paul (his parents had Portuguese, Chinese, and Jamaican blood) grew up comfortably in St. Andrew, Jamaica, his mother a renowned painter. He was a skilled athlete, excelling in swimming and especially water polo, playing for the Jamaican national team in the latter. Although his education was enough to land a prosperous career, dancehall music remained Paul's first love, particularly crafting rhythm tracks. He became a DJ after he began writing his own songs, patterning his style largely after Super Cat and finding a mentor in Don Yute; he also found contacts in several members of the reggae-pop band Third World in 1993, which helped open up business connections.

Paul released his debut single, "Baby Girl," with producer Jeremy Harding in 1996; it proved a significant success, leading to further Jamaican hits like "Nah Get No Bly (One More Try)," "Deport Them," "Excite Me," "Infiltrate," and "Hackle Mi." In 1999, Sean Paul started to make inroads to American audiences; he was first commissioned to collaborate with fellow dancehall hitmaker Mr. Vegas on a production for rapper DMX; titled "Here Comes the Boom," the song was included in director Hype Williams' film Belly. Also that year, Paul scored a Top Ten hit on the Billboard rap charts with "Hot Gal Today." Unfortunately, Paul had a very public falling out with Mr. Vegas over the packaging of the latter's remix of "Hot Gal Today"; still, it didn't slow Paul's career momentum, as he played the Summer Jam 2000 in New York City, the center of his American popularity. That fall, Paul released his first album on VP Records; the sprawling Stage One collected many of Paul's previous hit singles and compilation cuts, plus a few brand-new tracks. 2002's Dutty Rock and 2005's The Trinity were extremely successful. Both albums peaked in the Top Ten of the album chart and featured a handful of mainstream smashes.

    Dancehall at it's best!!

by SexySmitty on 12/13/09Hard Rock Live - Hollywood

An amazing show at the Hard Rock. The show started on time and both Shaggy and Sean gave great performances. Shaggy is a true entertainer...really knows how to interact with the audience. Money well spent.

The best part for sure was when he came out and did his thing. It was an hour and a half of people who were not good at all before he came out.

    Sean Paul was Great!!

by Southflori on 12/13/09Hard Rock Live Orlando - Orlando

Don't waste your money on the reserved seating for tickets for his concert in Orlando, the opening acts were pretty sucky,(except the DJ)(DJ was good). He could do a little meet and greet.

    Worst concert ever!

by ilvmusic on 12/13/09Hard Rock Live Orlando - Orlando

The show did not list any opening acts, so I was not expecting any. I was surprised when we had to listen to two hours of awful people singing words you couldn't even understand! When Sean Paul finally made an appearance he only sang for maybe 50 minutes. He didn't sing very many familiar songs and the ones he did sing, he left out many of the words and just let the background music sing it. I was very disappointed and I see why the show was less than half full. I would never go to another one of his concerts.

    Unexpectatly Shaggy was the highlight

by Teesh on 12/13/09Hard Rock Live - Hollywood

Honestly i bought these tickets really just to see Sean Paul i mentioned to my husband before hand that Shaggy is getting on a bit now and i felt he was really just piggy backing on Sean Paul's Success. I was wrong. In fact i felt that Shaggy's performance was much stronger than Sean Paul's. Shaggy actually drew in the audience and showed personality and actually entertained. Were as Sean Paul did not engage the crowd at all, he showed little to No personality and it just was not fun at all. I was more excited when the DJ played his set. It seemed he really couldn't be bothered to be there, you could tell he just wanted to do what he had to do and leave. Nice Venue although the seating waayyy! to close together its the kind of music you want to dance to which is quite difficult when you hip to hip with your neighbor.

The Show was wonderful , nice to see reggae at HR

by Geo54 on 12/12/09Hard Rock Live - Hollywood

I enjoyed the show , Shaggy was outstanding, didnt like the up front performers too much but it was worth the wait for Shaggy, I thought the hype for Sean Paul was too loud, and I didnt get to enjoy Sean Paul 's music very much, as the voice of the hyper was too loud , all in all i had a lovely evening

    Sean Paul was Awful

by MayT on 12/12/09Hard Rock Live - Hollywood

We have seen Sean Paul in the past and he has been great so we figured witha new album we would get to enjoy him once again. He was awful, his performance was lacking, he was hoarse and his sound people never adjusted the fact that his back up singers would overpower his voice dramatically. The majority of the time the crowd was not into the performance, unlike the Shaggy portion of the show. Most of Sean Paul's songs were modified to be played real fast and would only sing portions of it. I did appraciate the fact that he did attempt to sing live and not lip sync but come on sound people get in tune. People began leaving beffore the show was even over. Sean Paul do what you used to do, and whomever gave you this advice to change your show style FIRE THEM!!!!

by RASTAWITCH on 12/12/09Hard Rock Live - Hollywood

SHAGGY WAS GREAT....SEAN PAUL NEEDS TO SING A LITTLE MORE HIS MC CUTS HIM OFF TO MUCH WHEN HE IS SINGING OR TALKING IT WAS MORE LIKE THE MCS SHOW RATHER THAN SEAN PAUL..BUT THE SINGING THAT SEAN PAUL DID DO WAS GOOD I THINK HE COULD HAVE BEEN BETTER.

    Shaggy was awesome

by IndependentLady01 on 12/12/09Hard Rock Live - Hollywood

Venue had great acoustics! Although, Sean Paul did a good show, Shaggy was a much better performer, he worked the crowd better and the chemistry was fantastic. First time seeing Sean Paul but seen Shaggy lots of time, he never disappoints!
