San Diego State University Aztecs at SDCCU Stadium

Now that the NFL's Chargers have cleared out of town, the Aztecs are the principal tenant of SDCCU Stadium (formerly known as Qualcomm Stadium, formerly known as Jack Murphy Stadium, formerly known as San Diego Stadium). The stadium sits about five miles from the SDSU campus. Designed for pro crowds, SDCCU Stadium offers a loose fit for the light-drawing Aztecs, who make up for it with an entertaining brand of mostly nighttime football.

The team's trademark is its all-black uniform, which dates back to the era of coach Don Coryell. The mascot is the Aztec Warrior, and a "warrior shield" accompanies the team on the sidelines, to be held aloft after victories during the fight song. About two hours before kickoff, the players accompany the Marching Aztecs and members of the spirit squad on the Warrior Walk from the stadium's parking lot to the tunnel leading out onto the field.

San Diego State University Aztecs Football History

The first San Diego State football game was in 1921, but the history of Aztecs football began in earnest with coach Don Coryell, one of the greatest innovators ever to walk a sideline. Coryell took over as coach in 1961, leading San Diego State to undefeated seasons in 1966 and 1968 in the NCAA's small-college division and in 1969 at the NCAA's top level. Instead of competing directly with college football's big schools, he built his program by doing the things they tended not to do. He recruited heavily from junior colleges, and on offense he took to the air rather than play the game on the ground. The Aztecs produced a number of NFL quarterbacks during his time on campus: Don Horn, Jesse Freitas, Dennis Shaw and 1980 NFL MVP Brian Sipe. Coryell decamped for the NFL in 1973, and his radical emphasis on the passing game came to be known as the Air Coryell offense.

If Coryell put San Diego State on the map, it was Marshall Faulk who left an indelible mark. A nimble-footed, soft-handed running back, in 1991 Faulk recorded one of the best freshman seasons in college football history, rushing for 1,429 yards and 23 total touchdowns, while scoring 140 points in all. As a junior, in his final season, Faulk did a bit of everything, running for 1,530 yards and catching 47 passes for 640 yards. In 1994, Faulk was the second overall pick in the NFL draft.

    I love FOOTBALL!!!!

by FSU1SDSU1BYU1Houshold on 10/21/09Qualcomm Stadium San Diego State Aztecs - San Diego

The game was well worth it. As an SDSU alumni, I didn't expect a whole lot from my alma mater but they did a whole lot better than I thought! It was a great game and if they play in SD next year... I will be there!!!

one of the worst college sports venues

by NickVanRijn on 10/18/09Qualcomm Stadium San Diego State Aztecs - San Diego

We saw a good game but Qualcomm leaves a lot to be desired in every area. The parking lot is a mess, the stadium layout is confusing, and holy cow the concessions are overpriced, I mean, I'm used to price gouging at stadiums, but this was really bad. Plus when you leave the stadium, you are forced into a direction that you might not want. We ended up getting lost. (Temporarily, but thank goodness for GPS.)

This game was awesome. Awesome seats for the price and I would definately recommend ticketmaster to anybody for event tickets and I also use them in the future whenever I need some good seats for a decent price! GO COUGS!

Game was good, venue leaves much to be desired

by Vincente on 10/5/09Qualcomm Stadium San Diego State Aztecs - San Diego

Went to watch the game and product on the field was good and improving. Entering the parking lot at Qualcomm was a nightmare, 40 minutes from Friars Road. Concessions were worse, 30 minute wait, to be informed that they were out of my desired food item. Horrible customer service. Makes one consider if it is worth the effort to attend.

    Skyshow, Fantasic!

by markdig on 9/15/09Qualcomm Stadium San Diego State Aztecs - San Diego

The entire event was fantastic the whole way through. We arrived a little early to the stadium to begin our outing with a little tailgating. Parking was easy. Crowd was fun. Watched the Aztecs win the football game, which was nice. KGB Skyshow was amazing!! I have seen it from outside the stadium before, but nothing compares to being inside the stadium. Me and the rest of my party all had a great time and would recommend it to anyone.

    KGB Sky Show

by Bomber18 on 9/14/09Qualcomm Stadium San Diego State Aztecs - San Diego

This is always a great family event and my family loves to come to this event every year. The best fireworks extravaganza in Southern California. I will say that watching the Aztecs the last few years has been painful at best, and the first year for Coach Hoke I saw sloppiness on the defense which, if not corrected, will spell another long and dreary season....anyway.. My family stopped at Phil's BBQ and then headed for the stadium where we got inside right after halftime. When the football gets better, we'll arrive earlier.

    KGB SKYSHOW 2009

by MINGOKID on 9/14/09Qualcomm Stadium San Diego State Aztecs - San Diego

Fireworx are ALWAYS breathtaking - year after year. Circus theme was very stupid and lame unfoturnately. I miss the "unusual" things they have had in the past such as laser show, "fire" explosions (in the middle of field), etc. Nothing too outrageious this year. Did NOT like the music selection this year. The spotlight operator totally missed his mark on the opening act of girls performing on ropes hanging from giant helium balloons. The girl was in the dark while the guys holding the ropes were in the spotlight. DUH!!!! Not much "IN" the stadium going on to warrant buying a ticket anymore. Better off just watching outside and turning on the radio. I've seen the skyshow every year since the first time on Fiesta Island. Met my husband at SkyShow #2! Think I'll start watching from the hill above the stadium in the future... :(

    fireworks awesome

by tigery on 9/14/09Qualcomm Stadium San Diego State Aztecs - San Diego

The clown thing was really silly. Almost felt like you were at a kid event. Next time we'll do the parking lot thing--not worth the money to see clowns.

    Disappointing Night

by debreese on 9/14/09Qualcomm Stadium San Diego State Aztecs - San Diego

Well first of all we got to the event late as dinner ran late. When we arrived the game was over however we were there for the fireworks. Once we drove in arond 7:30 they informed us that they were closing the parking lot right after our car. Then we hurried and ran up to the stadium to go see the fireworks and low and behold the security officer informed us we couldn't get in due to the gates were all clsoed? I spent $80 on tickets that I couldn't use. We then proceeded to sit on the end of our car and watch from the parking lot. Not my idea of the best seat...Someone should have informed us of the time frame. Extremely disappointed in my night.

    SkyShow was Great!

by APeters on 9/14/09Qualcomm Stadium San Diego State Aztecs - San Diego

We mostly went to see the KGB SkyShow after the football game, but the game was cool also...SDSU won!! The SkyShow was incredible, best fireworks I have ever seen, better than the 4th of July! I hope KGB is able to continue this tradition, because it is truly unforgettable! Great job!

    SDSU HOTTT this year!!!

by Oilqueen on 9/14/09Qualcomm Stadium San Diego State Aztecs - San Diego

They started out a great game, scoring right away. From the first to the third quarters, they just didn't let up. I'm not a football expert, so I'm not going to tell you any moves or things like that. Fourth quarter it looked like they were getting tired, or they just wanted to give the T'birds a chance to catch up. It never happened, they won, and had a great celebration after the game. The Sky show: great fireworks, I think music needed a bit of help. Pyrotechs, keep doing your thing! KGB music should NEVER again be put with circcus music. As hard as you all tried, they just don't go together. Overall, Coach Hoke and staff: Outstanding! KGB, I still think you're awesome!

    Game & Fireworks were Amazing!

by CeeJ on 9/14/09Qualcomm Stadium San Diego State Aztecs - San Diego

Game was great to watch; Fireworks were spectacular. Only comment is circus theme was a little too strange and the music was too loud and distorted. The fireworks are the best around, loved the infield fireworks as well!

Fireworks visability could have been better!

by AmBunny on 9/14/09Qualcomm Stadium San Diego State Aztecs - San Diego

The game was good. Glad the Aztecs won. Fireworks were great, however the visability was not great in all areas of stadium. The fireworks should have been more centered over the stadium. Additionally, some of them were set off too low, so we only saw the tops of the display. Overall, still a great show.
