About

SCANDALOUS is the new Broadway musical based on the life of Aimee Semple McPherson, the world's first media superstar, whose passion for saving souls equaled her passion for making headlines.  Set in 1920s Los Angeles, holiness collides with Hollywood in the extraordinary tale of one woman's charismatic rise to fame amidst scandalous love affairs and growing controversy, inevitably ending in her much-publicized fall from grace.

    scandalous

by zululo on 12/6/12neil simon theater - new york

Scandalous was the worst play I have ever seen. The singing was fine but the songs were lousy, really not much of a story. It was so bad, that despite paying all that for our tickets, we left at the intermission

    Awesome!

by MagsterLabster on 12/6/12Neil Simon Theatre - New York

This play is awesome! The talent is exceptional! I now plan to read more about the main character, Aimee Semple, as my interest to learn more is great after seeing the show. I don't understand the politics of Broadway, as I heard the closing date had been announced and the reviews were not good. This is malarkey, as this is a play for everyone. Don't pay any attention to the NY critics. Listen to tourists who pay the bills there. GO SEE IT WHILE YOU CAN! Tell Kathy Lee to write another!

    Scandalous was wonderful

by Anonymous on 12/5/12Neil Simon Theatre - New York

I could not believe that this musical got bad reviews by anyone. My husband and I took my mom for her birthday and we all LOVED it. The story line, the music, the cast, it was truly wonderful. It made it even more special because we saw Kathie Lee who came and spoke to people right behind us. Would highly recommend Scandalous to everyone I know.

    A Remarkable Journey

by Simon4 on 12/4/12Neil Simon Theatre - New York

"Scandalous" took me on a journey far beyond what I had anticipated, and into the life story of Aimee Semple. It was remarkable for the way in which it invited us in to experience her life, from the time she was a young woman until her untimely death at age 54. Carolee Carmello gave a performance that will certainly earn her a Tony nomination for best actress in a musical, and the cast surrounding her was impressive as well. The music and dancing swept the story along and us along with it.

    Terrific show!

by MamaNancy on 12/4/12Neil Simon Theatre - New York

When my husband said that he wanted to go see "Scandalous", I was a little wary, as I was sure that he would be disappointed. He was looking forward to a show about the life of Amy Semple McPherson and I knew that, being a musical, it would probably be pretty "schmaltzed" up. He LOVED it, and so did I. I appreciate musicals in a way that he doesn't, but it had both the great accurate story line for him, and the wonderful music and acting that I enjoy. It was a wonderful uplifting night of entertainment. The singing was fantastic (as you expect from Broadway) and the casting was perfect. (I always enjoy the supporting characters and was not disappointed here).

We (me and my 2 BFFs) were totally blown away by this musical, it's story and it's fabulous cast. Carolee Carmello MUST get a Tony nomination for her magnificent voice and passionate portrayal of Aimee. GO GO GO SEE IT!

Our group loved it! Thought Carolee Carmello should win a Tony!. Kathie Lee's lyrics were great. Voices were some of the best we've heard in a musical!

    Better than expected

by Pavula on 12/3/12Neil Simon Theatre - New York

I had seen the original production of this play, then titled "Saving Aimee'" at Signature Theatre in Arlington. I think it was in 2007. I was disappointed when I read the reviews but decided to go to see the final product of this play. I enjoyed the show. Carolee Carmello was super fantastic. Also enjoyed Edward Watts, Roz Ryan, Candy Buckley and Andrew Samonsky. Sadly, George Hearn was not in the performance I saw. I did not like his substitue.I hope they will release a CD. If "Now.Here.This." can get a CD out using the on-line service where people like me can make small donations (forgot the name) so can KLG. Just started reading the boook - it will be interesting to compare. "Saving Aimee" was a better title - Aimee saves, but who can save Aimee? "Scandalous" reminds me of the Smash TV Show musical, "Bombshell."

Left Wanting To Read More About Aimee!

by pshop on 12/3/12Neil Simon Theatre - New York

We've seen hundreds of Broadway musicals and plays. As I read the reviews after arriving in NY, I thought I had chosen a dud (I purchased the tickets before the show's opening night). Hubby and I agreed we've seen many more truly awful Broadway productions than this. The show held our interest - the story of Aimee Semple MacPherson - the cast was terrific/professional/charming/enduring - music was excellent. There was one small exchange where the play slowed with awkward preaching that lasted a couple of minutes...we both felt that the only thing lacking was one terrific showstopping arrangment (maybe a blend of black gospel and church standard hymn) to have felt truly uplifted and completely satisfied - and humming as we left the theatre! We thoroughly enjoyed, otherwise. We believe this show has been unfairly treated because of the backers and Kathy Lee Gifford's involvement as the writer and lyricist (way to go, Kathy - great job!) You will likely leave wanting to learn more about the Aimee person you'd never heard of before if you're a history buff like me - wow! I hope the backers hang in there until word of mouth is able to spread beyond the tightly knit Broadway band of naysayers. This is a good solid interesting enjoyable fun evening of Broadway entertainent, well worth the ticket price!

    Scandalous was terrific!

I enjoyed the show soooo much! The singing was unbelievable particularly the Amy character. Since I didn't know about Amy Semple MacPherson, it was also very informative.

    Sorry, KLG!

by CaymanBully on 12/2/12Neil Simon Theatre - New York

Obviously, a lot of time and work has gone into this production; sadly, this is not reflected in its entertainment value. Unmemorable tunes and pedestrian lyrics combine to make this lengthy soap opera a mind and butt numbing experience.

Wonderful show. Kathy lee gifford is brilliant.. What show were the critics watching? Could not have been "scandalous." Saw the show with my 33 year old daughter, 62 year old sister, 63 year old friend and i am 64. We all loved it equally. Performers were outstanding. Already told my friends to run not walk to see the show. Thank you for giving us the opportunity to see a brilliant story of a woman's life.

What a great surprise - definitely one of the best new musicals we have seen in years. Carolee Camello's voice and acting are outstanding. The action is continuous and the story is clear. Not to be missed.

    Surprise

by goof2 on 11/30/12Neil Simon Theatre - New York

The three of us went with much trepidation after reading some of the reviews and we were all pleasantly surprised. While it was not the best play I have ever seen, the story alone was fascinating, especially since it was true despite some poetic license. The music was fine and many of the lyrics were right on target for the play's theme. Although it is not a play I would see again, it was a pleasant way to spend an afternoon.

    Fabulous Show!

by Suzisailor on 11/29/12Neil Simon Theatre - New York

We read the reviews after we purchased tickets and thought, "uh oh". We were thrilled with the entire performance. Great music, Carolee has a fabulous voice, the story line kept us interested! This was a terrific show and we would recommend it to everyone (might not capture the interest of kids).
