The return of live music - the return of Scandal.
by The Serpent on 7/16/22Sony Hall - New YorkThis was the first concert I've seen since the pandemic. I've been missing this SO much. And having only discovered Scandal three or four years ago, I was fired up with the zeal of a new convert. Waiting in line with the other fans was actually quite enjoyable despite the heat. We traded stories of how we each found ourselves drawn into the world of Japanese rock music. A nice young woman held my spot while I got some water from a vender across the street and later enjoyed a brief shady respite provided by a parked tour bus. Amongst the fans next to me in line were some who had traveled further than my own eight an a half hour by train from the other end of the state, some even from overseas. Everyone was friendly and considerate. The staff of the venue could have given some helpful directions earlier on, but everything went smoothly once we were allowed inside. The merch was a little disappointing to be honest, though I eventually went ahead a bought a T-shirt anyway. But why not offer one featuring a photo of the (very lovely!) band members with the band name figuring prominently? So few people here in the US know how great this band is - let us fans advertise for you! The setlist was strong though only about an hour and a half, featuring a number of songs from the new album as well as hits from earlier years. Of course, for a band with ten albums to their credit, it's clearly impossible to play every song that every fan wants to hear. Not surprisingly, for a band that's been together for so long, their musicianship was spot on. And I loved that each member had a chance to sing lead vocals. Their very different voices, now taking turns, now blending in harmony are one of Scandal's greatest strengths. The band members were energetic, moving around the stage and playing to the crowd. They truly looked to be having fun, which is contagious. Whenever Haruna addressed us fans, we cheered wildly whether she spoke in English or Japanese (I recognized "sugoi" a couple times). Having paid extra for the VIP bundle (admittedly the most I've ever paid for a concert ticket), I then had my photo taken with the band by a staff member. Nice job, sir! I'll treasure it. Now if only that nice young woman in line next to me would contact me, my trip will be perfect. I'll definitely try to catch Scandal next time they're on tour. Though I don't get to NYC often, I'd give this venue high marks as well.
