San Diego State Aztecs Men's Basketball History

San Diego State Teachers College first fielded a men's basketball team in 1921, and achieved success in the lower divisions of college basketball, winning the 1941 NAIA championship. From 1956 to 1970 the Aztecs played in Division II of the NCAA, making the leap to Division I in 1970 under Dick Davis.

San Diego Padres legend Tony Gwynn succeeded in both baseball and basketball at SDSU, becoming the only two-sport All-Conference player in WAC history. Gwynn still holds the Aztecs’ men’s basketball career mark for assists, with 590 between 1978 and 1981. Entertainer and television pioneer Art Linkletter also played for San Diego State in the program's early years.

Starting in 1999, a new era for San Diego State began as they moved from the Western Athletic Conference to the new Mountain West Conference and hired legendary Michigan coach Steve Fisher to rebuild the men’s basketball program. Los Angeles Clippers superstar and two-time NBA Finals MVP Kawhi Leonard played on the Aztecs from 2009 to 2011. The Aztecs reached the Sweet 16 twice, in 2011 and 2014, behind the play of Leonard and other such as Malcolm Thomas, D.J. Gay and Xavier Thames.

    Aztecs Basketball ho-hum

by elenabier on 12/15/10Aztec Mens Basketball At Viejas Arena - San Diego

Viejas Arena was handsome looking, though the sound system was weak some of the time. Parking went smoothly and entrance to the arena too. The game was actually quite dull....college basketball with a score of 16-15 at halftime.....not very exciting. I went to watch Cal Poly but neither team showed their colors. Performance anxiety perhaps??....Aztecs have been given alot of press, and up to that point were undefeated; so what? Show us some game. Cannot recommend.

Best game I've ever been to

by GoAztecs on 12/9/10Aztec Mens Basketball At Viejas Arena - San Diego

As an avid sports fan that has attended many different games including, Hockey, Basketball, Football both pro and college, baseball etc. Living in LA yes most are Kings, Lakers, Dodgers etc. Recently I attended the SDSU vs. Wichita State University men's basketball game. As a SDSU graduate in early 2000 I thought I would go check them out since they are in the top 25 this year and I haven't seen the new Vieja's arena. And am I so glad I did. I have to say by FAR, the most exciting environment I've been to, (well Wrigley Field Chicago give's it a run) but basketball no contest. The crowd was so fun, I was high fiving so many starangers like they were all my best friends, and the arena has to be the nicest college basketball venue in California. I can see why San Diego State has been recruiting so many great players lately. Its a MUST recommendation as a fan or not. Stayed at a local cheaper hotel and drove back to LA happy the next day.

The game was exciting from start to finish!

by markinsandiego on 12/6/10Aztec Mens Basketball At Viejas Arena - San Diego

The game between SDSU and Wichita State was supposed to be a close and exciting game, matching two similar teams with similar offenses and defenses. The game did NOT disappoint. The entire first half, as well as the first 5-6 minutes of the 2nd half was a see-saw battle. Both teams played great offense and defense. Then, all of a sudden SDSU's defense and offense turned Unbelivably good. The Aztec Men went on a scoring spree of 15 unanswered points - while holding Wichita State scoreless. It was an amazing run. Then, the Aztecs went cold for a bit while Wichita State started mounting a comeback of sorts. Finally the Aztecs came back to life, and their lead slowing increased back to the final margin of 13 points. This was a great event, in a great venue. I decided to avoid the parking problems and took the San Diego trolley to the game. It's a bit of a walk on campus, but I feel I made the right choice.

    Aztec Basketball!

by JumpThis on 12/6/10Aztec Mens Basketball At Viejas Arena - San Diego

Having never been to a college basketball game I wasn't sure what to expect. I also had never been to Viejas Arena (don't tell the volleyball team!) The crowd was into it, the student section was incredible, with all the shouting and chants we felt as though we were part of the in crowd. Great game by the way! Also a fantastic bargain. We got nice seats for less than $25 each. Trolley stop near the gym, so parking was not an issue.

    aztec bball

by sergey on 12/4/10Aztec Mens Basketball At Viejas Arena - San Diego

Aztecs have big time program now but parking management is atrocious around the arena. I cant believe they dont take over control of the street lights. Speaking of lights, it would be nice if they figured out how to turn the lights back on inside the arena after player introductions. And the announcer's way over-extended presentation of names of players is rediculous. Even the "lets get ready to rumble" guy only does it at the start of fights. If he did it ten times every round, that would be the equivalent to what fans are subjected to at Aztec basketball games. And speaking of stupid traditions, why are Aztec fans so lame that they stand up until the Aztecs score? Standing and screaming fans should be putting the pressure on the visiting team to get their first score. This is like they are chearing against the home team. Go to a game in Tucson and see how it is supposed to be done.

    aggressive defense and conditioning dominate

by Berkle on 12/4/10Aztec Mens Basketball At Viejas Arena - San Diego

Fisher's well coached and aggressive ball hawking team overwhelmed slow & bewildered St. Mary's. Viejas Arena is a marvelous venue. Aztec fans are loud, fun and overall just great fans. Parking is abundant but not well controlled so very congested. All this from a St. Mary's grad and Gael fan who of course, wished for a different outcome. Berkle
