San Diego State Aztecs Men's Basketball History
San Diego State Teachers College first fielded a men's basketball team in 1921, and achieved success in the lower divisions of college basketball, winning the 1941 NAIA championship. From 1956 to 1970 the Aztecs played in Division II of the NCAA, making the leap to Division I in 1970 under Dick Davis.
San Diego Padres legend Tony Gwynn succeeded in both baseball and basketball at SDSU, becoming the only two-sport All-Conference player in WAC history. Gwynn still holds the Aztecs’ men’s basketball career mark for assists, with 590 between 1978 and 1981. Entertainer and television pioneer Art Linkletter also played for San Diego State in the program's early years.
Starting in 1999, a new era for San Diego State began as they moved from the Western Athletic Conference to the new Mountain West Conference and hired legendary Michigan coach Steve Fisher to rebuild the men’s basketball program. Los Angeles Clippers superstar and two-time NBA Finals MVP Kawhi Leonard played on the Aztecs from 2009 to 2011. The Aztecs reached the Sweet 16 twice, in 2011 and 2014, behind the play of Leonard and other such as Malcolm Thomas, D.J. Gay and Xavier Thames.

San Diego State Aztecs at Viejas Arena
San Diego, California, is home to one of the premiere basketball programs in the Mountain West Conference. The San Diego State University Aztecs play at Viejas Arena, which opened in 1996 as the Cox Arena and currently seats 12,414 for basketball. The Viejas Arena incorporates part of the Aztec Bowl, which was once home to the SDSU football team, and due to its position on the National Register of Historic Places cannot be entirely torn down. They are coached by Brian Dutcher.
The SDSU basketball 2023–24 regular season kicks off in November at home as the Aztecs face off against Cal State Fullerton. The Aztecs play their final game of the regular season at home against Boise State. Here’s a list of key games to keep an eye on:

It would be helpful if there were clear signs at the trolley station on how to get to the arena and how to get to tge trolley from the arena. Biggest of all is the very early shutting down of MTS busses and trolley, especially when the game starts at 8pm!!
SDSU made it seamless in getting into the arena- showing our vaccine card, checking bags and scanning the ticket was very smooth. Inside the arena, people were masked up so we felt safer. But most importantly, the Aztecs gave an incredible show! Shooting, defense and slam dunks were awesome! You can’t beat the energy from the students and local fans. These games are my fave local sporting events!
I absolutely enjoy going to aztecs basketball games. It is simply a great experience.

It was a back and forth game. Some good plays, some didn't work out, some bad ref calls, some funny chants by the student section and others, and at the end of the evening, the Aztecs won. Couldn't be better. I LOVE Aztec BBall.
Fans lined up outside the arena an hour before gates opened; the atmosphere was electric. White tshirts honoring Kawhi Leonard on every seat contributed to the white out. Competitive first half left Aztecs down by 8. Kawhi Leonard was accompanied by his family, former Aztecs and all of his Clippers teammates and coach Doc Rivers The retirement of the #15 Jersey culminated an emotional and well done ceremony. The Aztecs, led by Matt Mitchell, scored 49 in the second half and defeated Utah State by 12. The fans were engaged and loud throughout. The win was never in doubt for this Aztecs team, with their shutdown defense and multi pronged offense. A fun night!
I sat high up to avoid climbing all those stairs and I had a great view of the entire arena. I haven’t been to an Aztec’s Mens game in a few years and I had no idea how fun it would be. It was loud and action packed. The crowd was so into it: the enthusiasm was contagious! The only draw back was the parking garage. $20? And I had to sit in the car for 20 minutes before I could safely pull out of my space. I’ll go again but I’m taking the trolley next time. GO AZTECS 🏀🏀🏀🏀
My first SDSU basketball game. Also my first time using my phone as my ticket rather that a hard copy. Everything went smoothly! My only problem was not being able to see where my seat was on the seating chart. I wanted a seat close to the aisle. I wound up smack in the middle of the row. I could only find out when i got to my seat.
It was a great game, crowded but easy to get into the arena. Parking lot works much better than others such as Petco or Qualcomm. Only one concern: a lot of drank people who affects the atmosphere.
Cox arena is an awesome place to watch college basketball. The atmosphere is simply awesome when the aztecs men basketball team plays. Highly recommend for anyone who likes college basketball.

It was great to see the Aztecs put together a complete game against a very good team and hang on for the victory! It was also great to see the arena full of enthusiastic fans.
The games are always a great time as the Aztecs have established a winning tradition and are tough to beat at home. At 12,000 seats, the place is still small enough that there aren't many bad seats in the house. However, I would just caution against sitting in the Bench seats in the last 6 rows, as you'll have no leg room along with someone's knees in your back. But other than that, I love going to the arena to support our Aztecs!
WE WENT TO THE AZTECS VS WYOMING COWBOYS GAME AND IT WAS ALOT OF FUN. THE ASTECS ARE STARTING TO GET THEIR MOJO BACK AS THE SEASON PROGRESSES, SO IT WILL BE GREAT TO SEE THEM DO WELL IN THE POST-SEASON. SDSU AZTECS ARE THE BEST TEAM IN THE MOUNTAIN WEST, AND WILL PROVE SO IN THE MOUNTAIN WEST CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP.
