I was eager to see the classic production of Carmen and looked forward to the passion and heat of this story. Ginger Costa-Jackson (Carmen) was a strong performer and amazing vocalist, however Carmen was portrayed as flippant, losing much of her beloved, sultry, seductive nature. The air of romance was lacking between Carmen and Don Jose and Escamillo came across as a showboat. I had hoped for intensity but Don Jose leaned toward madness rather than overwhelming emotion. Sarah Tucker (Micaela) was phenomenal! She embodied Micaela beautifully - her voice, presence, coyness was spot on.
We attended the February 2nd performance which just left us wanting more !!! Stephen Powell’s (Rigoletto) Face expressions were do real and deep and he is able to make us feel the love he has for his daughter. The way they transmit the feelings in undeniable and we felt them down to our core. His voice was perfect in every sense, projecting the mockery, love, pain throughout the whole opera. Best Rigoletto ever! Alisa Jordheim’s (Gilda) voice can’t be any better. She can do anything with that it and she was just able just give us the most amazing performance a Soprano can deliver. The loved for her father, the emotions felt for her first love, the way she is willing to give up her life for her love inspite of the immense love for her father...and the ending is just breathtaking!!!! The escenography, costumes, music... everything was absolutely fantastic!!! Thank you David Bennett for bringing such an high quality performance to San Diego.
If you enjoy watching a traditional Mariachi group playing good old-fashion mariachi songs then it is with a heavy heart that I say that this is NOT the event for you. This show is a play where they sing in a opera style and the Mariachis provide background music. If you appreciate Opera then go for it, but be warned that Spanish Opera is difficult to understand.
The musicians were top notch. The female singers were great, the male singers were good. I wish the little boy had been given more stage time. The story was interesting , I would of like a bit more character development. I like the poster but it did not really represent what the play/opera would be about.
