Sammy Hagar and The Circle on Tour

In 2014, rocker Sammy Hagar formed supergroup The Circle with drummer Jason Bonham, guitarist Vic Johnson, and former Van Halen bassist Michael Anthony. The following year, after the group released a live album and DVD, At Your Service, a successful run of explosive tours saw the band playing everything from Montrose and Van Halen covers to Led Zeppelin tracks.

In 2019, the group are releasing their first studio album of original material with Space Between, out May 10, followed by a North American tour from late April to mid-June. Hagar, sometimes called the Red Rocker, is known to put on a fiery show. With his band of seasoned professionals enjoying onstage camaraderie, fans can expect an electrifying setlist complete with songs from each era, as well as tracks from the long-awaited new album.

Sammy Hagar Background

Sammy Hagar was born in Salinas, California, in 1947 and shortly after moved to Fontana, where he was exposed to classic California rock. At an early age, Hagar started learning guitar and played in a number of bands. His first frontman gig came at age 14 with the Fabulous Catillas; at the same time, he played rhythm guitar and sang in the Johnny Fortune Band.

Hagar's first big break came with his work in the band Montrose, a group started by guitarist Ronnie Montrose, who'd previously done session work for Edgar Winter, Herbie Hancock, and Van Morrison. Montrose dropped their first album in 1973, and the self-titled work charted on the Billboard 200. Some have called the album America's first heavy metal record. The group's second LP, Paper Money, came out the following year, and it reached No. 65 on the Billboard 200.

After leaving Montrose, Hagar embarked on a string of solo albums, finding a new level of success with 1982's Three Lock Box, whose hit single "Your Love Is Driving Me Crazy" reached No. 13 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 3 on the Mainstream Rock Songs chart. Hagar used his success to catapult his way into one of the decade's biggest rock acts, Van Halen, after vocalist David Lee Roth exited the group in 1985.

Hagar's first album with the band, 5150, reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200, while single "Why Can't This Be Love" charted at No. 1 on Billboard's Top Rock Tracks. The album went on to be certified 6x platinum. Between 1986 and 1995, Hagar would release four No. 1 charting albums with Van Halen.

    Real Rock and Roll

by Westie75 on 6/29/17Hard Rock Rocksino Northfield Park Hard Rock Live - Northfield

This was a truly excellent show, spanning a vast catalogue of songs by Led Zeppelin, Montose, Van Halen, Chickenfoot, and other gems woven in for good measure. Not only is each musican a master of their craft in their own right, but they sound amazing together and they come across as a down to earth group who are loving every moment of what they are doing. If you are a fan of any of the aforementioned bands- see this show. These guys bring it. My only wish is that they would have included "Dreams."

The venue is one of my fav. You are right on top of the artist. The sound was great and Sammy and the band were NOT mailing in this show. They were much better than I thought they would be.

    Sammy is good, but...

by HeadlyGrange on 6/29/17Hard Rock Rocksino Northfield Park Hard Rock Live - Northfield

Sammy came out to play but looked like he should have been at home watching golf. The stage could have used a little help as well visually. I know he's getting up there in age but he still sounds good and the band was excellent. He could have played a few more songs, 15 seemed light for a vet with his catalogue.

    Red Rocker in the CLE

by Randygk on 6/29/17Hard Rock Rocksino Northfield Park Hard Rock Live - Northfield

Sammy, Michael, Jason & Vic were very entertaining! Interacting with the audience, pouring shots of rum & mezquila in the cups of fans in the front row. They played some Montrose, Led Zeppelin, Van Halen & of course Sammy's solo works.

It was my first time at The Rocksino for a show and I loved it!! The sound was great and it was good to be at a good old Rock Concert!! The band and Sammy sounded amazing, and they moved around on stage so everyone could interact with the band. The Rocksino staff was helpful and the facility was well maintained. I look forward to other shows in the future.

Sammy and The Circle ROCKED !!

by CLEVEBG on 6/29/17Hard Rock Rocksino Northfield Park Hard Rock Live - Northfield

Sammy and the band were in top form. Set list was as expected, covering Montrose, Van Halen, solo Sammy and Zeppelin. While I do appreciate some of Sammy's slower stuff, there was NONE of that here. The band tore through 23 songs, added two encores, and had the raucous crowd wanting more. Highly recommend seeing this tour. You will not be disappointed !!

    Best show of the summer!!!

by Skinfish on 9/27/16FirstMerit Bank Pavilion at Northerly Island - Chicago

Great show, Sammy is such a great performer and the entire band is made up of veterans of rock & roll so it is a great, fun party of a show. The setlist is fantastic with Hagar era Van Halen, solo Sammy, Montrose and Led Zeppelin to boot. Highly recommended!!!

We have seen Sammy a number of times and this wasn't one of his best sets. He did a few Led Zepplin songs and I'm not a Zeppelin fan. I feel like if I pay to see Sammy Hagar I want to hear Sammy Hagar songs not another band's songs I normally wouldn't pay to see. Also, most of the fan base at this show seemed more interested in treating the concert like it was just a bar to hang out at instead of a concert where you pay attention to the band. Lots of people just casually hanging around, having conversations, playing on their phones. I don't think I've ever seen that at any other venue. Also, we bought seats in row B of the section we were in assuming this meant our view would not be blocked by more than just the few people in Row A ahead of us. Wrong! With all the people moving about and gathering together in groups to talk the walkway in front of our section were filled with people so now our view was terrible. Unlike other venues, the security here don't worry about keeping the aisles clear. I would definitely go to see Sammy again but not at Northerly Island.

Sammy Hagar & The Circle at Northerly Island

by jim4 on 9/5/16FirstMerit Bank Pavilion at Northerly Island - Chicago

Great concert . Local dude, Jim Perterik writer & singer of Survivor, Ides Of March, and others opened for Sammy. Sammy Hagar came out with Vic Johnson, Michael Anthony, and Jason Bonham. Together Sammy & the Circle rocked the place all night long.

    Red Rocker rocked!

by dancingmachine on 9/5/16FirstMerit Bank Pavilion at Northerly Island - Chicago

I've seen Sammy over 30 times and am always amazed at his energy and his interaction with the crowd. Show was heavy Van Halen, but hit all decades of Sammy's music. Could have easily gone another hour or two and still not cover all his hits. Only disappointment is that there was no encore.

by Jimjono on 9/5/16FirstMerit Bank Pavilion at Northerly Island - Chicago

Terrible folding chair venue. Sammy good as usual, but late. Same opening film entro. Waaay tooo long. Radio sponsored people really stupid and way too much. One too many Led Zeppelin songs. No encore. Band really good. Concert rating FAIR

    Sammy continues to rock

by Tcblvs1 on 9/5/16FirstMerit Bank Pavilion at Northerly Island - Chicago

Another great show. I'm not a huge fan of the venue but what can you do ? Jim Pieterik was a nice change of pace as the opener. The only downside of the evening was the ever annoying mancow and crew. They couldn't have been more lame or annoying.
