About

SAM PREKOP IN CONCERT:

As the frontman for the meditative post-rock band The Sea and Cake, Sam Prekop has been thrilling audiences for decades with his heart-rending vocals and chiming guitars. For his solo performances he brings a completely different but no less inspired presence to the stage, using his fine-tuned ear to create catchy, ethereal sonic tapestries drenched with synthesizers. With his amazing technical mastery Prekop effortlessly converts bobbing melodies into echoing computerized flourishes and dissonant metallic clangs. In early 2015 he returned with his first solo album in five years, The Republic, and he’s playing a number of shows in support of the release, giving fans a chance to experience his minimalistic synthesizer mastery and dazzling arrangements in person. The fun-spirited inventiveness and musical joy that Prekop brings to every stage is sure to spill over to the audience as this sonic mad scientist continues his brilliant experiments.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Post-rock pioneer Sam Prekop was born in Chicago, and he first rose to Windy City prominence in 1988 as a singer and guitarist in the band Shrimp Boat. Following the group's demise in 1994 Prekop formed the post-rock outfit The Sea and Cake, which quickly stood out from the scene with its mellow and vivid sonic textures. As the band’s reputation continued to grow Prekop released his self-titled 1999 solo debut to widespread acclaim. His second album Who’s Your Professor Now? arrived in 2005, one year after The Sea and Cake announced a hiatus to allow members to focus on their solo projects. Though there had been electronic hints in The Sea and Cake’s albums starting with 1997’s The Fawn, no one could have guessed that his 2010 album Punch Card would feature nothing but synthesizers. Prekop continues to perform with a reunited Sea and Cake while also refining his electronic soundscapes with solo material like 2015's The Republic.

    Sea and Cake Awesomeness

by Ltothesecondpower on 7/2/12Mercury Lounge - New York

Besides the fact that they are my favorite band, I couldn't have seen the Sea and Cake at a better venue. They were amazing, and what a perfect spot to see them. It is also interesting to note that before their opening act Helado Negro became a musician, rumor has it that he was the lover of many woman. A modern day Don Juan if you will.
